ariaWatch v0.3 - First Linux Binary Release
Hello there!
Starting off, this is a massive release. It finally turns ariaWatch from a monitor to a full-fledged download manager. This is also the first release with a pre-built binary so you can try it out without compiling the project yourself!
Updates
Some of the biggest changes:
- Add downloads using URLs, supported magnet URIs, and local .torrent files.
- Pause and resume individual downloads or all downloads.
- Remove downloads, with a separate managed-mode option to delete eligible downloaded files.
- Persistent download history using SQLite.
- A managed aria2 controller that can continue running after you exit the dashboard.
- External mode for connecting to an existing aria2 instance.
- Improved pagination, snapshot reconciliation, and session handling.
Installation
For starters, you could download the binary and run it directly. Or you could clone the repo yourself, and build it from source.
Make the binary executable and run it:
chmod +x ariawatch-v0.3.0-linux-x86_64
./ariawatch-v0.3.0-linux-x86_64Verify download
You can verify the integrity of the downloaded binary using its SHA-256 checksum:
d0d63eeb74e865c9d8935ed0ea3336d92c335bd1447caf4a82004e1ab5a38cc1
Compatibility
The binary provided here was compiled and tested on my own Arch Linux (Linux Zen 7.2.11 kernel, x86_64) machine. It may work on other Linux distros and hardware out there, but compatibility and performance is not guaranteed.
Also note that AriaWatch does not bundle aria2 itself. Managed mode launches and supervises its own instance of the system-installed aria2c binary, so you need to have aria2 installed and available on your PATH. External mode connects to an already-running aria2 instance with JSON-RPC enabled.
Still no AUR package or Windows/MacOS support yet... hopefully in a future release!!
Help me test it
Since this is the first release and the first major update to the project, i would love to receive feedback on how it works on real systems.
Please report the bugs, unexpected behavior, and feature requests through the GitHub Issues making sure to include the following:
- AriaWatch version and installation method (prebuilt binary or built from source)
- Linux distribution, kernel version, and system architecture
- Operating mode (managed or external), if applicable
- Steps to reproduce the problem
- Expected behavior and actual behavior
- Relevant logs or error messages
- (Optional) Screenshots or a short video showing the issue
Please redact sensitive information before sharing logs. Never include RPC secrets, passwords, tokens, or other credentials in an issue.
For feature requests, explain what you'd like to see and what problem it would solve. General feedback is welcome too!
P.S.: updates are going to be slower now that my classes have resumed
ariaWatch v0.2
Hey there again!
So this is the second release and its honestly not that big of a release, but it does add some important features like:
- Cursor/Highlight to see which download is selected
- More-info block for the selected download
- Keyboard navigation of the cursor (vim-style and arrow keys)
- Automatic scrolling to keep the currently selected download in view
The next release has some bigger plans. Even at this release, its still just a monitor, and not a full-blown download manager, but i'll be working towards that eventually.
No binary release or AUR package yet still,,, i will think about it later on,,, again :)
ariaWatch v0.0.1
Hey there!
This is the first public release of ariaWatch yet. It is a terminal based UI that monitors your already-running aria2 server and shows downloads with progress tracking, remaining size and status.
There are a lot of things planned for this project, and it is a first release so it has some very rough edges. It just "works" right now just as a simple read-only monitor, with more features and controls coming in future.
Right now, it can show these:
- Live download table with progress, speed, remaining size and status.
- HTTP JSON-RPC and WebSocket lifecycle notifications
- Automatic snapshot reconcilation and WebSocket reconnection
- File-based diagnostic logging with log rotation
- Configurable RPC endpoints and optional authentication secret.
Requirements: Rust 2024-compatible toolchain and an existing aria2 instance with JSON-RPC enabled.
Known Limitations: Waiting and stopped download snapshots are limited to 1000 entries each. ariaWatch monitors downloads but does not provide download-management actions (as i said before).
This release only provides the source code, so you would need to compile it yourself. In future releases, i will provide a binary as well as install instructions, and maybe even push it to the AUR.
