Network Monitor 1.0.8

Network Monitor 1.0.8 reorganizes the Usage tab so the daily chart and the
application table no longer compete for the same vertical space. The table and
chart now have their own inner tabs, while the monthly summary cards remain
visible above them.

Highlights

  • Separate Usage table and chart tabs. The first inner tab is the table and
    the second is the chart. On short windows the chart can no longer overlap the
    table or push rows out of view.
  • Summary cards stay fixed. The monthly download, upload, and total cards
    remain above both tabs, so the selected month stays visible while switching
    views.
  • Search stays with the table. The search field, sortable columns, filtering,
    and CSV export remain in the Table tab.
  • The chart gets its own space. The Chart tab shows the daily download
    and upload series with the existing interactive pan and zoom controls.
  • Bilingual and RTL. New tab labels and the chart hint are translated into
    English and Arabic, with the same RTL alignment and light/dark styling as the
    rest of the application.
  • No data or service changes. The usage database schema, background collector,
    blocking, signed updater, and repository behavior are unchanged.

Layout details

The Usage tab now contains a nested tab widget:

  1. Table — search field, application table, sorting, and the existing
    monthly totals.
  2. Chart — the daily download/upload chart.

The monthly summary cards are outside the inner tab widget, so they remain
visible in both views. The selected month dropdown still controls both tabs.
The previous behavior, where the chart and table were stacked in one layout,
caused the chart to overlap the table when the available height was too small.

Updating

Version 1.0.6 and later can install 1.0.8 with Settings → Application
updates → Check for updates. The updater verifies SHA256SUMS and
SHA256SUMS.asc before installing.

For a manual /opt/network-monitor install from 1.0.5 or older, install once:

After that, later releases can be installed from the update button.

  • The AppImageHub catalog entry from the merged one-file PR remains live, and
    the 1.0.8 AppImage keeps the same gh-releases-zsync update information.

Notes

  • The table remains the default inner tab when the Usage tab is opened.
  • The chart is still interactive: drag to pan and scroll to zoom.
  • Usage is counted while Network Monitor or the optional background collector is
    running. See the 1.0.7 notes for background collection details.
  • No telemetry, account information, or application list is sent anywhere.

  • ثنائي اللغة ودعم RTL. تُرجمت تسميات التبويبات وملاحظة المخطط إلى
    الإنجليزية والعربية، مع محاذاة RTL وتنسيق الوضعين الفاتح والداكن نفسهما
    المستخدمين في بقية التطبيق.
  • لا تغيير في البيانات أو الخدمات. لم يتغير مخطط قاعدة بيانات الاستهلاك أو
    جامع الخلفية أو الحظر أو المحدّث الموقّع أو سلوك المستودع.

تفاصيل التخطيط

يحتوي تبويب الاستهلاك الآن على أداة تبويب داخلية:

  1. الجدول — حقل البحث وجدول التطبيقات والفرز وإجماليات الشهر الحالية.
  2. المخطط البياني — رسم التنزيل والرفع اليومي.

تقع بطاقات الملخص الشهرية خارج أداة التبويب الداخلية، لذلك تبقى ظاهرة في
العرضين. ولا يزال منتقي الشهر يتحكم في التبويبين. كان السلوك السابق، حيث كان
المخطط والجدول متراكبين في تخطيط واحد، يسبب تداخل المخطط مع الجدول عندما تكون
المساحة الرأسية غير كافية.

التحديث

يمكن للإصدار 1.0.6 وما بعده تثبيت 1.0.8 من
الإعدادات ← تحديثات التطبيق ← التحقق من التحديثات. يتحقق المحدّث من

Network Monitor 1.0.7

Network Monitor 1.0.7 adds an optional background collector, so monthly and
daily usage can keep updating after the main window is closed. It is opt-in
from Settings → Background collection.

Highlights

  • Usage collection while the app is closed. The collector runs as a
    systemd user service and samples traffic in the background. No root access is
    required.
  • One database, one writer. The GUI and the collector share
    ~/.local/share/network-monitor/usage.db. An advisory flock on
    usage.db.lock elects exactly one writer, and the GUI hands the writer role
    to the collector when the service starts. This prevents double-counting and
    keeps SQLite safe when both processes are open.
  • Safe handoff. When the GUI takes the writer role back, it resets the
    traffic baseline so the first sample after the handoff does not include
    traffic already recorded by the collector.
  • Generated user service. The service unit and launcher are generated at
    runtime for manual /opt, .deb, .rpm, AppImage, and Flatpak
    installations. The AppImage path is refreshed whenever the application
    starts.
  • Status and control in Settings. Shows whether the collector is running,
    starting, stopped, blocked, or failed, with the last heartbeat time. Enable
    or disable it with one checkbox.
  • No surprise background service. Background collection is disabled by
    default. Without it, monthly and daily usage is counted only while Network
    Monitor is running.

How it works

When enabled, the application writes:

  • ~/.config/systemd/user/network-monitor-collector.service — the systemd user
    unit.
  • ~/.local/share/network-monitor/collector-launcher.sh — a small launcher
    that points at the current installation.
  • ~/.local/share/network-monitor/collector.json — a heartbeat and status file
    used by the Settings tab.

The collector starts with the user session, samples every five seconds, groups
traffic by the same application keys as the GUI (including Flatpak, Snap, and
AppImage grouping), and writes monthly and daily totals to the shared database.
It does not collect while keep_usage is disabled.

The same monthly table, daily chart, and CSV export are used whether the data
was recorded by the GUI or by the background collector.

Requirements

The background collector needs a working systemd user session. If systemd is
not available, the setting is disabled and the application keeps counting usage
while it is open. The collector does not need pkexec or root access.

Updating

Version 1.0.6 and later can install 1.0.7 with Settings → Application
updates → Check for updates. The updater verifies SHA256SUMS and
SHA256SUMS.asc before installing.

Notes

  • The collector reports status through collector.json; if its heartbeat is
    stale, Settings shows it as stopped.
  • If the GUI and collector cannot hand off the writer role, the Settings tab
    shows a clear error. Restarting Network Monitor retries the handoff.
  • Reset monthly usage from the Usage tab. When the collector owns the writer
    role, the app briefly stops the service, performs the reset, and starts it
    again.
  • Flatpak background collection depends on the host's systemd user session and
    the Flatpak sandbox permissions. If it is unavailable, the checkbox is
    disabled and the app falls back to counting while open.
  • No telemetry, account information, or application list is sent anywhere.

Network Monitor 1.0.4

Network Monitor shows live download and upload speeds for every Linux
application, with real application blocking through cgroup v2 + nftables and a
polkit-authenticated helper. The interface is bilingual English/Arabic with
full RTL support and defaults to English.

Highlights

  • Live per-process download and upload rates.
  • Active connections, executable paths, and session totals.
  • Interactive time-series traffic chart.
  • Search, sortable columns, hide-idle filter, and export.
  • Real block/unblock with cgroup v2 + nftables and polkit.

Changes in 1.0.4

  • The default theme now follows the system color scheme. Light mode is used
    when the system is not dark, including minimal Xvfb environments such as the
    AppImageHub test runner. Dark mode is used only when the system reports a
    dark color scheme, or when the user selects Dark in Settings.
  • Added a Theme setting with Follow system, Light, and Dark
    options. The selection is saved and applied immediately.
  • The AppImage now embeds gh-releases-zsync update information and publishes
    NetworkMonitor-1.0.4-x86_64.AppImage.zsync next to the AppImage. Users can
    update with AppImageUpdate or similar tools.
  • The AppImageHub catalog test passed on v1.0.4 with no warnings. Version
    1.0.4 resolves the two v1.0.3 follow-up warnings: dark default theme and
    missing AppImage update information.

AppImageHub

One-file PR: AppImage/appimage.github.io#10786. The
v1.0.4 AppImage starts in light mode on non-dark systems and includes update
information. A /retest comment will re-run the catalog test.

Notes

  • The .deb and .rpm install the privileged helper and polkit policy.
  • The AppImage bundles the helper, but blocking still requires host pkexec,
    python3, nftables, and cgroup v2.
  • The release assets are built by the GitHub Actions workflow on Ubuntu 22.04.
    The signed package repository serves the same official assets.

Network Monitor 1.0.3

Portable release built on Ubuntu 22.04 (glibc 2.35) so the AppImage runs on the oldest supported Ubuntu LTS. The AppImage now bundles libxkbcommon-x11, libxcb-cursor, and related xcb helpers.

AppImageHub PR #10786 passed the catalog test with this release:

existing network-monitor-bin belongs to a different project.

AppImageHub

A one-file AppImageHub pull request is prepared in
packaging/appimagehub/. It is not yet merged into the catalog.

Notes

  • The .deb and .rpm install the privileged helper and polkit policy.
  • The AppImage bundles the helper, but blocking still requires host pkexec,
    python3, nftables, and cgroup v2.
  • The release assets are built by the GitHub Actions workflow; the signed
    package repository serves the same official assets. SHA256SUMS and the
    signed APT/RPM metadata therefore agree.
