v0.1.3 Technology Preview (AwesomeAtti)

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 26 Sep 22:34

The "wait you can just... play chess now?" update

no cap this is the update. sit down.

Highlights (the ones that ate, no crumbs left)

  • The board is playable now, fr fr. Drag your pieces around like the
main character you actually are. Click to make a move, branch off into a
variation, basically become the sigma of your own opening prep. The board
finally has main character energy instead of just sitting there looking
pretty and doing nothing, which — not gonna lie — was extremely mid of it.

  • Paste a FEN or PGN straight onto the board. Found a spicy position
somewhere on the internet? Copy it, paste it into the Game View, and
boom — manifested into existence. It's giving "I put in zero effort and
got maximum results," which is honestly the dream.

  • Draw on the board like it's your notes app at 2am. Arrows, highlighted
squares, the whole delulu-is-the-solulu vibe. Point out the blunder, point
out the brilliancy, point out exactly why your opponent should be
embarrassed. It saves too, so future-you can relive the cringe forever.

  • Variations you can actually edit now. Promote a line to the mainline,
demote it back to side-quest status, or delete the branch that was never
going anywhere anyway. Rewriting history like it's a group chat you're
cleaning up before your parents see it.

  • A REAL engine. Not a bit. Not a vibe. An actual Stockfish, installed
on demand, running live evaluations while you play — on desktop AND the
PWA. Flip it on in Settings and let it judge every single move you make,
in real time, with zero chill. It has no feelings. It will not be nice
about your last move. It has never lost a game and it will not start now.

  • Hover an engine line to preview it, click to play it. The engine
shows you its plan; hover and it draws the line on the board, click and
it just plays the move for you. This is not a flex, this is just
    correct. Zero effort, maximum rizz.

  • Import games straight from a PGN file. Drag it in, drop it in, done —
your games are actually IN the app now, not just vibes and promises.

Coming soon (manifesting rn, no takebacks)

  • Real move evaluations — not just "the engine says +1.4" and leaving you
to figure out why. Moves gets tagged as an annotation (blunder,
mistake, inaccuracy, whatever it earns), sitting right there in the move
list. It's not a coach. It's not gonna hug you after. It's just going to
put a little red flag on the move and let you sit with that.
  • Smart Collections — a folder that builds itself based on rules you
set. Passive income but for chess games.
  • Subscribing to your friends' games — stalking, but make it a feature.
Their Chess.com games just show up. No screenshots required.
  • Annotating moves with actual comments — not just arrows and vibes,
real words, so you can finally explain why you played Bd3 there. (You
don't know either. That's fine. Write it anyway.)

None of this exists yet. It's in the pipeline. Manifest it into the next
release with us.

The fine print (still funny, still true)

  • Still a Technology Preview, which is legal-speak for "held together by
hopes, dreams, and 1,240 passing tests." It might blunder occasionally.
So do you. So does everyone. It's giving beta and that's okay.
  • Native (non-WASM) engines are still cooking. Manifesting patience.
  • macOS builds are unsigned, so Gatekeeper is gonna give big "I don't know
you" energy on first launch. Right-click → Open to let it know you're
    cool, actually.

download it, break it, tell us what happened. we'll fix it before the
algorithm finds out.

v0.1.2 Technology Preview (AwesomeAtti)

@github-actions github-actions released this 24 Sep 01:23

Technology Preview — this release is still under active development and contains bugs or incomplete features. See the assets below to download and install this version.

macOS builds are still unsigned, so right-click → Open on first launch or Gatekeeper will look at you like you tried to sneak a phone into a testing room. Download below. Go outside eventually. Thanks for playing along with a chess app that's still very much under construction. 🏗️

v0.1.2 — patch notes, no cap 🐴

Yo. We shipped stuff. This is not a drill, this is a Technology Preview, which is legal-speak for "it might fall over but we PROMISE it's giving main character energy." Bugs may be present. We are not scared of them. They should be scared of us.

🔥 Chess.com import is REAL now (we do not larp anymore)

Add Games → Online tab used to be straight up cosplaying an import. Fake. Simulated. NPC behavior. Not anymore. It now yeets your ENTIRE Chess.com account — every single game, no cap — straight into your library using Chess.com's actual API, like a big boy app. Run it again later and it only grabs the new stuff, because we're efficient like that, we don't do allocated homework at 11:58pm, we do it ahead of time (lie, we did not).

Lichess still fake though. It's giving "the group project member who said they'd do the slides." We see you, Lichess guy. Working on it.

🧠 The PWA got a whole brain transplant

The browser version used to store your data in IndexedDB, which is the databases equivalent of hiding your diary under the mattress. We moved it to OPFS running SQLite in its own dedicated worker thread, which is just a fancy way of saying your games now live in an actual vault instead of a Jenga tower held together by vibes.

Also: if you open the app in two tabs at once like a menace, it now pops up a little sign that's basically "ONE (1) king per board, sir." Very polite about it. Very final about it.

📈 PWA said "let me catch up to desktop" and DELIVERED

Tags, favourites, collections — these used to just... update on your screen and then ✨forget✨ the second you closed the tab. Ghosted you, honestly. Now they actually write to the database like a functioning piece of software. The Explorer tab also stopped making up statistics (it was mock data this whole time, we're so sorry, it was lying to your face) and your very first Sample Games library now bootstraps for real instead of being a cardboard cutout of a database.

🌐 New website, who dis

plyvio.app got a full glow-up. Real screenshots. Both themes. It looks like a website that respects itself now instead of a Geocities fever dream (affectionate). Real domain too.

🐛 Bug fixes (the unsexy but crucial arc)

  • Importing THOUSANDS of games used to just silently die halfway through and say nothing about it, very mysterious, very "we need to talk" energy. Fixed — it chunks the writes now so SQLite doesn't have a meltdown.
  • Some imported games showed blank Elo and Move counts, like the app just forgot how numbers work for a sec. Numbers are back. We stan numeracy.
  • The Chess.com/Lichess picker used to show "cc" and "li" like some cursed abbreviation instead of the actual logos. It has read the brand guidelines now.
  • "No games found" errors used to just shrug and not tell you which account failed. Now it actually says the name. Communication is key, as my Life Skills teacher would say.

Engine downloads

@AwesomeAtti AwesomeAtti released this 25 Sep 23:58

Downloadable engine packages for Settings -> Engines. Each asset is a single zip containing one engine build's runtime files for one platform, plus that build's own README and license -- see the archive's own README for what it is, where it came from, and how it's licensed. New engines and platform builds are added to this release over time; it stays separate from the app's own version tags.
