To-do: This guide is over-complicated, you don't need to decompile and recompile everything, you can just rename the files or edit the registry to change which model the camera data is associated with. Update the article with these methods.

To-do: It's possible to use Blender to create infinite-perspective renders of things (this is what the Minecraft Wiki does for its block renders). Look into this, it would probably work better than screenshotting the model.

Note: Konclan has started work on a blender plugin for rendering icons https://github.com/BEEmod/Icon-Maker-Addon

There is a special way to get a fixed angle using Model Viewer which allow us to make nice Palette Icons for all styles. For this method, you'll need to get the Crowbar decompile tool.

  1. Launch Model Viewer:

  1. Load the Clean version of the model and set the desired angle by dragging Left Click on the model, and use Right Click to Zoom in/out:

  1. Choose your favorite background color. It is recommended that you use the same one as the original palette icons has:
    Color:
  • RGB = 229, 233, 233
  • HEX = #e5e9e9

  1. Once you are sure about the desired angle, close Model Viewer.

  2. Launch Crowbar to decompile the styled versions of that model you previously loaded on Model Viewer.

  3. Make separated folders for each decompiled model, then rename each decompiled model to the same name of the Clean one by editing the line that contains the model´s name on the QC file: $ModelName "insert_the_name_here.mdl

  4. Recompile the models and drag the one of the style you want to start making the screenshot, to the props_map editor folder which is located at Portal 2\bee2\models\props_map_editor and replace the clean version for it.

  5. Launch BEEmod and set the style of the dragged model. Note that BEEmod will not be able to change Style successfully unless you have closed Portal 2 Authoring Tools.

  6. Now launch Model Viewer and load the model. You will have it in the fixed angle.

  7. Unfortunately, due to some application´s deficiencies, the "take screenshot" option in Model Viewer will generate a defective picture, so you will have to hit the key "Prt Src" seen in the picture from below, and paste the image in some image editor and cutting it.
