Philosopher's Stone 1.0.2

  • hpps.exe starts on its own. Double-click it, use a shortcut, Quiver or the Barthes Launcher: the separate hpps_launcher.exe is gone (delete it from an older install if you like). Every start writes hpps_run.log beside the exe, with the crash report if the game crashes; send it with a problem report.
  • A new icon: volume I from the Barthes Launcher's shelf, drawn for the project (no game artwork).
  • Readme fixes: the Barthes Launcher download, and the settings and logs as they really are.

With thanks, as ever, to MiddleDucky. Archipelago: hpps.apworld is attached for room hosts.

Installing

The easiest way is the Barthes Launcher: it installs the build for your disc, unpacks and checks the disc, and keeps the port up to date.

By hand: download the zip for your disc (PAL for Philosopher's Stone, USA for Sorcerer's Stone) and unzip it into a folder of its own. Make a game folder beside hpps.exe holding your disc's extracted files (game\default.xbe; the Barthes Launcher or extract-xiso unpacks an .iso), then start hpps.exe. Updating: unzip the new release over the old one; your hpps.toml, saves\ and shadercache\ stay.

You need your own copy of the game. Nothing from the game is included.

  • The game's Xbox disk images now live beside it, in saves\xbox, instead of a folder shared by every port
(%LOCALAPPDATA%\xboxrecomp). Each port keeps its own, the folder stays portable, and a game started from a
packaged (MSIX) app no longer quits at boot because it can't open them. Your saves were already beside the game
    and stay where they are.

With thanks, as ever, to MiddleDucky.

This is the first Barthes Recompiled release of the port. Everything that makes the game run on the PC is
MiddleDucky's work (HP-PS-Xbox-Recomp), and this release
carries all of their v0.3.0 work. Thank you, MiddleDucky, enormously, for making this port and sharing it.

New

  • Archipelago multiworld randomizer. Play Philosopher's Stone in an Archipelago
multiworld: tick "Play this game in an Archipelago multiworld" on the game's Archipelago tab in the Barthes
Launcher, enter the room's server, your slot name and the password, and press Play. The pause menu gains a
Hogwarts Travel page for going back to any day or set piece you have unlocked. With the apworld's Skip
    Tutorial
option (on by default) a new game starts at Day 1 in the dormitory; Day 0 stays on the Travel page.
    The room's host needs
hpps.apworld, attached to this release. Tested on the PAL disc.
  • Settings inside the game. "Settings" in the title menu and the pause menu opens Gameplay, Graphics and Controls
pages drawn in the game's own font and colours. They change the same settings as F10 and save to hpps.toml.
  • Button Mapping (Settings > Controls): press the action, then the controller button for it.
  • Quit To Desktop in the title and pause menus.
  • Both discs. The North American (Sorcerer's Stone) disc now works as well as the European one. Each disc has its
own download; the Barthes Launcher picks the right one for your disc.
  • Cutscene fast-forward: hold Start or Back to run a cutscene to its end quickly (on by default).
  • Start-up logos skipped (on by default; F10 > Gameplay or Settings > Gameplay to turn it off).
  • Frame-rate caps of 120, 144, 165 and 240, paced by a high-resolution timer. The game's own logic still steps at
its console rate; higher caps draw more frames.
  • Controller in background (Settings > Controls, F10, launcher): turn it off and the game ignores the controller
while another window has the focus.

Fixes

  • The settings pages fit a 4:3 screen: label and value columns, room for the highlighted row, and the "press a
button" prompt in the hint's place.

Known issues

  • Button prompts are always Xbox's; PlayStation and Switch pads work through Steam Input or DS4Windows.
  • The troll's walk animation and footsteps, the squared ground-fog tiles and some pop-in in the forest are as in
    v0.3.0.
