What's new in NavMap 0.16 & NavBridge 0.16

Watch App (NavMap 0.16)

• Multi-Watch AMOLED Support: Dynamically scales layout and coordinate geometry across 19 Garmin AMOLED watches (31 hardware product variations): Forerunner (165, 165 Music, 265, 265s, 965), Fenix 8 AMOLED (43mm, 47mm), Epix Gen 2 & Epix Pro (42mm, 47mm, 51mm), Venu 2 (standard, Plus, 2s), Venu 3 & 3s, vívoactive 5, MARQ Gen 2, and D2 Mach 1 (360px to 454px circular displays).
• Unobtrusive Google Attribution: Minimal bottom Google pill. Tap the label or press START anytime for a 5-second popup with Google's exact map data copyright.
• Store Distribution: NavMap is published on the Garmin Connect IQ Store ($1.99 one-time lifetime purchase). Precompiled .prg and .iq watch packages are not hosted for free; developers can compile locally from source using the Connect IQ SDK (bash tools/build-watch.sh).

Phone App (NavBridge 0.16)

• Signed Release APK: Android companion app version 0.16 (versionCode 16).
• Play Store Compliance: Replaced restricted direct battery optimization prompt with standard App Details Settings intent.
• OSM Cleanup: Removed legacy offline OpenStreetMap road vectors, reducing app size and ensuring 100% compliance with Google Maps Platform terms.
• Credit Strip Probe: Automatically analyzes Static Maps attribution boxes to send exact credit dimensions (cw, ch, cs) to the watch.

Notice

NavMap and NavBridge are not affiliated with Google or Garmin. Requires an Android phone running NavBridge (iOS is not supported due to Apple notification sandboxing).

@Cube-VG Cube-VG released this 18 Oct 16:10

Install or update with the one command in the README, run in Terminal on a Mac or Linux computer:

curl -fsSLO https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Cube-VG/navmap-watch/main/setup.sh && bash setup.sh

To install by hand instead, see docs/SETUP.md. If you copy the watch app yourself, keep its name NavMap.prg on the watch, so it stays paired with NavBridge.

Files

  • NavBridge.apk: the Android phone app, version 0.15. It installs over earlier versions.
  • NavMap-fr165.prg: the watch app for the Forerunner 165, version 0.14.
  • NavMap-fr165m.prg: the same watch app for the Forerunner 165 Music.
  • SHA256SUMS: checksums of the three files. setup.sh checks them for you.

What's new in NavMap 0.14 (since 0.11)

  • The watch pairs again by itself after NavMap is reinstalled or set up again: opening NavBridge, or sharing a place to it, is enough.
  • When the map turns a lot at once, it turns in smooth steps instead of jumping.
  • Tapping the screen no longer covers the map with the credits, so a sleeve brushing the watch doesn't get in the way. START still shows them.
  • Without a map picture (no internet, say), the route line is still drawn, with a note saying why there's no map.
  • Crashes and runs that ended because the watch turned off are reported to NavBridge's log.

What's new in NavBridge 0.15 (since 0.8)

  • A navigation no longer ends while Google Maps is still navigating. Maps' notification can go away while you stand still, and NavBridge used to end the navigation then. Now the watch keeps the last turn until Maps updates it, and the log says why the notification went.
  • When you leave the route, the watch gets a new route line from where you are.
  • Shared Google Maps short links work on networks that don't follow them, such as Jio.
  • If the watch closes NavMap, NavBridge asks it to open NavMap again, but not over a NavMap that's already open, because that closes it.
  • The log shows why NavMap closed and how long it ran, and why NavBridge last stopped.
  • The watch's name is shown, and you're reminded on the phone when the watch needs a button press.

Tip: open NavMap from the watch's app list before you start navigating. If the phone's "Open NavMap?" prompt opens it instead, the watch closes it about 2 minutes after the last button press.

NavMap 0.11 and NavBridge 0.8

@Cube-VG Cube-VG released this 17 Oct 10:28

Install or update with the one command in the README, run in Terminal on a Mac or Linux computer:

curl -fsSLO https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Cube-VG/navmap-watch/main/setup.sh && bash setup.sh

To install by hand instead, see docs/SETUP.md.

Files

  • NavBridge.apk: the Android phone app, version 0.8 (unchanged since v0.10).
  • NavMap-fr165.prg: the watch app for the Forerunner 165, version 0.11.
  • NavMap-fr165m.prg: the same watch app for the Forerunner 165 Music.
  • SHA256SUMS: checksums of the three files. setup.sh checks them for you.

What's new in NavMap 0.11

  • The map turns so the way you're going is up, like Google Maps. It uses your direction of travel when you're moving, and the compass when you stand still. You sit just below the centre, so more road ahead shows.
  • The blue route line shows only the road ahead of you, starting at your arrow. After a GPS jump it looks ahead along the route first, so it doesn't jump back onto road you've already driven.
  • Fixed: a stray route line from the screen's top-left corner when the route started near you.
  • Smoother and lighter on the battery: the watch draws about once a second, timed by the GPS, instead of about three times a second. Each map picture is prepared for turning once, when it arrives, not on every frame. The app is also built with the compiler's speed optimisations.

NavMap and NavBridge are not affiliated with Google or Garmin. They use Google Maps Platform with your own key, under the Google Maps End User Additional Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy.

@Cube-VG Cube-VG released this 17 Oct 08:11

The first release. The easiest way to install it is the one command in the README, run in Terminal on a Mac or Linux computer:

curl -fsSLO https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Cube-VG/navmap-watch/main/setup.sh && bash setup.sh

It downloads these files, checks them, and installs them on your phone and watch. You sign in to Google to get your own Maps key, plug in the phone and the watch, and tap what it tells you on the phone. To install by hand instead, see docs/SETUP.md.

Files

  • NavBridge.apk: the Android phone app, version 0.8.
  • NavMap-fr165.prg: the watch app for the Forerunner 165, version 0.10.
  • NavMap-fr165m.prg: the same watch app for the Forerunner 165 Music.
  • SHA256SUMS: checksums of the three files. setup.sh checks them for you.

What's in it

  • One setup script that asks for everything in the terminal.
  • No keys are built into either app. setup.sh puts your Google Maps key on your phone, and NavBridge hands it to the watch.
  • NavBridge asks you to agree to Google's terms, and to it using your location, before it does anything else. You can withdraw that at any time under Privacy and terms.
  • The watch shows "Google Maps" under the map, and Google's map credits when you press START.
  • The watch buzzes twice before each turn, timed by your speed. The map has a warm paper background that's easy to read in sunlight.
  • Fixed: when the route started on screen, the route line's first piece was missing.

NavMap and NavBridge are not affiliated with Google or Garmin. They use Google Maps Platform with your own key, under the Google Maps End User Additional Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy.
