Brakes Required v0.3.1
Brakes Required 0.3.1
Released: 2026-10-25
Precise lap timing, clear rules for invalid laps, lap tones and fullscreen.
Still a playtest: please tell me what you find.
The easiest way to download is the Downloads page on dremet.games.
Download (click the file name; the same files are also listed under Assets at the bottom of this page):
- Windows: BrakesRequired-0.3.1-win64.zip. Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit.
Unzip, then startBrakesRequired.exe. - macOS: BrakesRequired-0.3.1-macos.dmg. macOS 11 or newer on Apple
silicon, 10.15 or newer on Intel. Open the DMG, dragBrakes RequiredontoApplications, then start
it from there. The first start needs Open Anyway; see the
README. - Linux (x86_64): BrakesRequired-0.3.1-linux-x86_64.tar.gz.
Unpack, then start./BrakesRequired.x86_64(needs Vulkan graphics drivers). Linux is new and less tested; please report problems. - Linux Flatpak (x86_64): BrakesRequired-0.3.1-linux-x86_64.flatpak (attached a few minutes after the release by the build workflow).
Install withflatpak install --user BrakesRequired-0.3.1-linux-x86_64.flatpak, then start withflatpak run games.dremet.BrakesRequired.
It needs the Flathub remote for its runtime:flatpak remote-add --user --if-not-exists flathub https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo.
Its saves live in~/.var/app/games.dremet.BrakesRequired/, separate from the tar.gz version. No automatic updates; see the README.
What an update keeps: settings and your nickname. Lap and sector times
are now measured more precisely, so 0.3.1 starts new leaderboards and your
best times start fresh, also the ones on your PC. The 0.3.0 times stay
visible on the website as the older version.
New
- Fullscreen: the game starts in fullscreen. Switch with F11 or
Alt+Enter (Option+Enter on macOS), or under Settings → Display mode. - Lap tones: a short tone for a sector best, another one for a personal
best lap and a special one for a new record on the online leaderboard.
They follow the existing volume setting. - WRONG WAY warning: big and red after a few seconds of driving against
the driving direction. A short spin does not trigger it. - A slider for the opacity of the HUD boxes in Settings.
- Light controller rumble on curbs (part of the existing rumble setting).
Changed
- Precise timing: lap and sector times are measured between physics
steps, so times are no longer rounded to 1/60 s. New 0.3.1 leaderboards. - Lap rules: every lap you drive in the driving direction is a lap. A
missed sector or finish gate makes it invalid, but the timer, splits and
delta keep running. The HUD says why: track limits, missed sector,
missed finish, or no timed start (the lap after a missed finish). Invalid
laps are not saved or uploaded. - Timing gates are wider and cover the curbs, so a clean lap with two wheels
on a curb counts. - Wall hits sound louder and brighter the harder you hit.
- Sand with traction control off: the gearbox no longer shifts up while the
rear wheels spin.
Fixed
- Driving the wrong way gives no sector times, and turning around over the
line no longer counts as a lap. - The delta against a ghost with a lead offset is correct from the second
lap on. - The bridges on Monte Seco Raceway no longer flicker.
Known issues
- On sand or grass the automatic gearbox can switch back and forth between
2nd and 3rd gear in some cases. - Windows: the game can freeze if a controller disconnects while it runs
(for example when an 8BitDo pad goes back onto its dock). This is a bug in
the Godot engine's controller library. Keep the controller connected until
you quit; Bluetooth mode is reported to avoid it. - Windows may show a SmartScreen warning: select More info, then Run
anyway. - Windows 11 with Smart App Control turned on blocks the game with no
Run anyway option (the build is not code-signed yet). The only way around
it is to turn Smart App Control off (Windows Security → App & browser control
→ Smart App Control settings). On some Windows versions it can only be turned
on again by reinstalling Windows. - macOS blocks the first start because the app is not notarized: open
System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway
(steps in the
README). - Leaderboard times are not verified on the server yet.

New
- Online leaderboards on dremet.games,
one per track. At the first start you pick a nickname (3-16 letters, digits,
_or-). It cannot be changed later and is shown publicly on the
leaderboards. No email or account is needed. What is stored and why:
privacy. - Every valid lap is uploaded with its sector times, driving aid levels and
car colours. Your best lap also uploads its ghost. Without internet the
game stays fully playable: laps wait and upload later. - Ghosts of other drivers: race against your own best, the driver just
ahead of you, or the leader. A lead of -2 to +2 seconds moves the ghost
ahead or behind. Ghosts carry a nickname tag; show or hide all tags with
N or the Back button on a controller (also in Settings). - Drive screen: for the selected track, your best lap, the online top 5
and the drivers just ahead of and behind you, plus your sector bests and a
link to the full leaderboard on the website. Ghost mode and lead can be set
there and in the pause menu during a race. - Car colours: pick two colours on the main menu with a live preview.
Your ghost shows them to other drivers. - In race: a small box with your nickname, best lap and sector bests (can be
switched off in Settings). - An on-screen keyboard, so the nickname can be entered with a controller only.
- New font (Oxanium) across the game, shared with the website.
Changed
- Launch: a launch clutch from half throttle up. With traction control
off the rear wheels can spin on a hard start; with it on, traction control
steps in. - Brakes with ABS off: the pressure builds up over a moment after you
press, so a short hard stab does not lock the wheels, while a long full
press still can. - Switching traction control or stability assist off is now noticeable.
- Engine sound: only the engine plays now; the separate intake and turbo
whine layers are gone. - Menus and HUD scale up on screens larger than 1920x1080.
- Menus react to the left stick of the controller you use; the track picker
stays still while the selection moves. - The chase and nose cameras turn around while you reverse; the chase camera
stays closer at speed; the engine is no longer louder in the close cameras. - Hotlap starts on Hangar Park Circuit and Monte Seco Raceway moved, so you
reach the line at full speed.
Fixed
- Menu fixes: focus, Back buttons and on-screen hints behave consistently
with keyboard, mouse and controller. - The controller buttons A (confirm), B (back) and Start (pause) always work
in menus, whatever you remap for driving, and a running remap can be
cancelled with the controller. - Timing and ghosts: switching ghost mode in a race swaps the ghost and the
delta reference at the next start/finish crossing; a reset on Monte Seco
Raceway no longer wipes the session. - Laps queued while offline survive a restart and upload later.
Known issues
- Older test laps were removed: the 0.3.0 boards start empty.
