FujiNet Go Intellivision v1.0.13

@tschak909 tschak909 released this 19 Sep 18:49

Network connections no longer stall between messages. The bundled FujiNet runtime now turns off Nagle's algorithm on TCP sockets, in both directions — on the socket the Intellivision connects out on, and on the one an incoming connection is accepted on.

N: traffic is made of small interactive writes: a request goes out, a reply comes back. Nagle held each write back waiting for more data to pack alongside it, and in a conversation like that the next data only arrives after the reply it is waiting on — so every exchange paid for it.

The runtime is also refreshed off a much newer upstream. It had been thirty-seven commits behind, so the device and network unification, the Odyssey 2 and Macintosh 68k bringups and a round of memory-leak and allocator fixes all arrive alongside the fix above.

Re-embeds the CONFIG ROM with Mattel ECS keyboard support.

With ECS enabled, CONFIG now reads the keyboard instead of only the hand controller:

  • arrow keys move the selection; Return opens a host or folder; Escape goes back
  • host names, directory filters, network names and Wi-Fi passwords are typed, instead of being spelled out one character at a time on the on-screen character grid
  • while typing, left arrow backspaces, and repeats when held
  • on the host slot screen, typing a letter starts renaming that slot from the character you typed

The character grid is still there for the handful of characters the ECS keyboard has no key for (!, @, &, _).

The hand controller is unaffected, and so is everything else if you have no ECS enabled — ECS remains off by default; turn it on in Settings to use the keyboard.

The bundled FujiNet runtime is rebuilt from upstream master (fujinet-firmware 13465cdd).

The previous build came from force-mbedtls-3 (07e1bed3), a branch that was never an ancestor of master, so the runtime had been standing still while upstream moved on. The Mbed TLS 3.x requirement it was branched for landed as #1595, which makes the branch unnecessary.

From the firmware

  • The new DaisyChain class, centralising device-chain management across buses (#1594).
  • The DriveWire .cas media format (#1596).

Not a change here: calendar compose/edit and Gmail composition arrived in 1.0.10 and are unaffected.

Install

fujinet-go-intv-v1.0.11.apk — armeabi-v7a, arm64-v8a and x86_64, Android 8.0+. The APK is debug-signed, as every release here has been — keep the same signing identity or sideload upgrades break.

No system ROMs are bundled. They must be imported before the machine can boot.

The bundled FujiNet runtime moves to a firmware build that refuses to compile against Mbed TLS 4.x.

That release removed the low-level crypto headers the runtime's TLS backend needs and split the rest into a separate library. A build machine whose system Mbed TLS had moved on to 4.x could produce a runtime with quietly broken TLS instead of failing outright. The build now finds a 3.x install, or stops and says so.

The runtime also picks up Gmail message composition, and the CALENDAR, GCAL and ICAL protocols can now create and edit events rather than only read them.

@tschak909 tschak909 released this 31 Aug 13:32

Every on-screen control now answers with a tactile blip.

The disc, the action buttons and the ECS keyboard already pulsed under a fingertip. Nothing else did — most conspicuously the Master Component keypad, silent on all twelve keys, but also the toolbar, everything in Settings, the P1/P2 player selector and the ROM-import gate. All of them now give the same short confirmation.

Two smaller gaps in what was already there are fixed too: the toolbar's RESET pulsed on a press-and-hold but not on a tap, and an ECS key driven from a D-pad or TV remote pulsed on release but not on the press itself.

Interface haptics

Settings gains a third switch, Interface haptics, governing the app's own controls only — toolbar, Settings, the player selector. Silence those without giving up the pulse under the keypad and disc, or the other way round. On by default, and its pulse is deliberately lighter than a keypress: tapping Settings is incidental, pressing a key is the point.

Install

fujinet-go-intv-v1.0.9.apk — armeabi-v7a, arm64-v8a, x86_64, Android 8.0+. Signed with the same key as v1.0.8, so it installs straight over an existing copy without losing your imported ROMs, cartridges or FujiNet configuration.

No system ROMs are bundled. exec.bin and grom.bin (and optionally ecs.bin) must be imported before the machine can boot.

The built-in FujiNet gains calendars.

The bundled runtime is rebuilt from fujinet-firmware's add-google-calendar branch (cd7c0eb9), which adds the CALENDAR, GCAL (Google Calendar) and ICAL (iCalendar over HTTP) network protocols. A program running on the emulated Intellivision can now open one of those URLs and read events back as plain text, the same way it already opens GDRIVE: and GMAIL:.

Nothing in the app's own interface changed — this is the network device gaining new protocols.

No system ROMs are bundled. exec.bin and grom.bin (and optionally ecs.bin) must be imported before the machine can boot.

FujiNet Go Intv v1.0.7

@tschak909 tschak909 released this 28 Aug 13:59

Adds a RESET button to the toolbar, in the slot the FujiNet button used to occupy, and moves the FujiNet configuration screen into Settings.

RESET is the console's own front-panel switch, and it does two things depending on how you press it:

  • Tap — the cartridge you are playing restarts in place. A cartridge pushed over FujiNet restarts as itself rather than dropping you back to the config menu, and anything you were holding down at that moment is released first, so nothing stays stuck.
  • Press and hold — the cartridge is ejected and the machine reboots into the FujiNet config menu. This is the only way back to config once a cartridge with its own memory map has been running: such a cartridge switches the FujiNet connection off for the rest of the session, and only a restart brings it back.

The FujiNet configuration screen is now the first entry in Settings, as FujiNet Configuration. It opens the same web interface the toolbar button did — only the way in has changed, to free the toolbar slot for RESET.

FujiNet Go Intv v1.0.6

@tschak909 tschak909 released this 27 Aug 01:52

Re-embeds the Intellivision CONFIG ROM with the selection-bar flicker fix.

Every CONFIG screen with a selection bar — host slots, the WiFi network list, the file browser — repainted its entire list each time the bar moved. #BACKTAB is the live STIC display list with no shadow buffer, and an NTSC frame only affords ~50 IntyBASIC cell writes, so those repaints (~320 cells on the host list, and a blocking mailbox round trip per row on the WiFi list) were scanned out half-finished for several frames running. The file browser additionally spent a longer-than-one-frame window carrying two of its four colour-stack advance bits, which shifted everything below the bar one stack position.

Moving the selection now recolours only the two rows that actually change, the WiFi list no longer re-fetches every SSID to do it, and the file browser's advance-bit swap is atomic. Disc wobble near a diagonal no longer defeats the auto-repeat delay and retrigger the redraw every other frame.

Also in this build: the character-grid cursor no longer redraws itself when stationary, and the boot progress bar no longer blanks its percentage before reprinting it.

Upstream: fujinet-config 49ce329, via fujinet-go-intv-desktop 271b3fc.

@tschak909 tschak909 released this 26 Aug 01:36

Changed

The FujiNet CONFIG menu is now in colour. Every screen has its own
palette rather than white text on black: host slots, the network info
screen, the file browser, the on-screen keyboard used for host names and
WiFi passwords, and the boot screen.

The file browser now marks each entry with its type — a folder icon for
directories, a cartridge icon for .rom and .bin files — and the
on-screen keyboard highlights the selected key in inverse video rather
than by changing its colour.

Nothing about how the app works has changed. This release only refreshes
the CONFIG program embedded in the emulator core.

Fixed

Cartridges that refused to load from FujiNet with "TRUNCATED XFER" now boot.
The larger homebrew titles were affected — Cloudfire, frantic 4 and
Pacmanthology among them. They describe their memory layout in far more detail
than an original Intellivision cartridge does, use bank switching to reach past
the console's address space, and add the JLP expansion for extra memory and
save games. The loader that handled cartridges arriving over FujiNet was a
simplified one and understood none of that: it gave up past the sixteenth
layout line, ignored the bank-switching notation entirely, and never looked at
the JLP settings.

Cartridges pushed over FujiNet now go through the emulator's own cartridge
loader — the same one used when you open a game from storage — so a game pushed
from FujiNet and the same game opened locally behave identically. JLP save
games are kept per title, under the app's own files directory, and survive
between sessions.

The boot progress bar now tracks the actual transfer. It measured against a
fixed guess rather than the cartridge's real size, so a small cartridge crawled
part-way across the bar and then jumped to the end, while a large one filled the
bar within the first few seconds and sat there for the rest of the transfer.
FujiNet has been sending the real size for a while; the emulator had never been
taught to read it.

Intellivision EXEC/GROM ROMs are not included — you import your own on first
run.
