VR mod for FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE: each eye rendered at your headset's resolution, first person while exploring, third person in battles, HUD on a floating panel, foveated rendering, optional DLSS. Works with any PC VR headset that has an OpenXR runtime (Virtual Desktop, SteamVR, Meta Quest Link, ...). Tried on Quest 3 and Pico 4 Ultra.

Setup

You need: the game (Steam, Epic Games Store or Microsoft Store / Xbox app), a PC VR headset with its PC app installed, Windows 10 or 11.

Option 1: launcher (easiest)

  1. Download ff7vr-20261018-0b72b37.zip and unzip it anywhere outside the game folder (your Desktop is fine).
  2. Start your headset's PC app (for example Virtual Desktop Streamer or SteamVR) and connect the headset.
  3. Double-click start-vr.cmd in the unzipped folder. It finds the game on Steam, Epic or the Xbox app, starts it in VR and puts everything back when you quit. Leave its window open while you play.

Per store:

  • Steam: nothing extra; Steam must be running (the launcher starts it if needed).
  • Epic Games Store: nothing extra.
  • Microsoft Store / Xbox app: unlock the game folder once: in the Xbox app open the game's page, then Manage, Files, "Enable advanced management features". The launcher tells you if it is still locked.
  • More than one store installed: Steam is used; set the environment variable FF7VR_STORE to epic or xbox to choose.

The mod has only been tested with the Steam copy. If your Epic or Microsoft Store exe is another build than the one the mod knows, the launcher says so before the start and the game runs without VR; please send the diagnostics zip (collect-diagnostics.cmd) so that build can be added.

Option 2: without the launcher (files in the game folder)

  1. Download ff7vr-20261018-0b72b37-dropin.zip.
  2. Open the game's End\Binaries\Win64 folder (the one with ff7remake_.exe): on Steam right-click the game, Manage, Browse local files; on Epic and the Xbox app use their "open install folder" entry.
  3. Unzip the files into that folder.
  4. Start the game from your store as usual (or with ff7vr-start.cmd in that folder). To remove the mod, delete the files you added.

DLSS version (NVIDIA RTX cards only, experimental)

Use the -dlss zips instead of the ones above (ff7vr-20261018-0b72b37-dlss.zip with the launcher, ff7vr-20261018-0b72b37-dlss-dropin.zip without). They need one extra file that I'm not allowed to include: NVIDIA's nvngx_dlss.dll.

  1. Open https://github.com/NVIDIA/DLSS/tree/main/lib/Windows_x86_64/rel, click nvngx_dlss.dll, then "Download raw file".
  2. Put it in the game's End\Binaries\Win64 folder, next to ff7remake_.exe. If you already use Luma or another DLSS mod, it is probably there already.

Without that file the mod runs without DLSS.

In the game

Home (or both stick clicks, L3+R3) switches between first and third person. End recenters the view. Insert turns 3D off and on. Delete (or View/Back + Y, touch pad + triangle on a PlayStation pad) opens the settings panel. Settings are in ff7vr.ini in the folder you unzipped; every setting has a comment. Known problems and more details: README and GUIDE.

What's new in v1.5

Tactical mode no longer blurs. When the battle command menu opens, the game blurs the whole picture outwards from the centre and separates its colours; in a headset that is hard on the eyes. Both are removed in 3D by default (the greying stays). [comfort] screen_blur = 1, or the Comfort tab of the settings panel, brings the game's look back.

Interaction prompts in a fixed place. The prompt over a ladder, door, item or person you can use is now pinned at a fixed spot on the HUD panel, centred and a little below the middle, in first and third person alike, and it stays visible where the game used to hide it as soon as its object left the view. [ui] prompt_fixed (1, first_person or 0) and prompt_x / prompt_y set it, also on the HUD tab of the panel.

Settings panel asks before saving. Changes apply at once while you try them; when you close the panel it asks whether to save them to ff7vr.ini ("No, just testing them" / "Yes, please save"). X still saves at once.

Launcher for every store. start-vr.cmd finds the game on Steam, the Epic Games Store or the Microsoft Store / Xbox app (FF7VR_STORE chooses when several are installed, FF7VR_GAME_DIR names the folder by hand), checks that the game folder can be written before touching it, and warns before the start when the exe is not the build the mod knows. Epic and Xbox copies are untested so far: reports welcome.

Every setting has a comment in ff7vr.ini.
