v0.8.0-beta.5 - Double-tap highlighting
Double-tap a word to highlight it in Kobo's built-in reader. Double-tap inside an existing highlight to remove the whole highlight, including older multiword passages.
Beta release — only tested on Kobo Libra 2, firmware 4.38.23852, with KEPUB books. Other models and firmware are untested and can attempt to run the plugin; there is no model/firmware whitelist. Back up your annotations and settings before testing.
Features
- Native word highlighting and removal with a double tap.
- Japanese word selection with TinySegmenter for double taps and long presses.
- Optional NickelMenu controls for Japanese long-press words and the highlight rendering fix; both default to On.
- Rendering correction for all highlights, including older passages and highlights with notes. Reopen your book after toggling it.
- Highlights saved through Kobo's native annotation system, with no duplicate registry or plugin-imposed count limit.
- Disable and uninstall flags; uninstall also removes the optional NickelMenu controls.
Install
- Download KoboRoot.tgz from the assets below.
- Connect the Kobo by USB and copy the file, without extracting it, into the hidden
.kobofolder. - Safely eject and let the Kobo install and restart.
- Open a KEPUB book and try adding/removing a disposable highlight.
To add the optional controls, install NickelMenu separately, then extract NickelMenu-settings.zip to the Kobo drive root, preserving its .adds paths. Your existing NickelMenu configuration is preserved.
Limitations and recovery
- EPUB/PDF handling is not implemented. Japanese segmentation may select shorter pieces of a compound or phrase.
- Removing a highlight has no plugin undo. Handling of attached notes remains unverified; do not assume a note will be preserved.
- To disable, create an empty
doubletap_disablefile in the Kobo drive root and fully restart. Delete that file and restart to re-enable. - To uninstall, create an empty
doubletap_uninstallfile in the Kobo drive root and fully restart. The flag removes itself. Uninstall preserves saved highlights/notes and preferences. - Required native-function checks remain; finding those functions does not prove compatibility on an untested setup.
The committed-source build matches the device-tested plugin binary byte for byte. Host and ARM Qt regression checks, independent menu-setting tests, and package/known-firmware binding checks pass. Device testing covers core highlighting, both settings, disable/re-enable, uninstall cleanup and reinstall on the configuration above.
