Lemon for macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon.

What's new in 0.5.0

  • AI upscale. The Resize ring can now enlarge pictures 2× or 4× with Real-ESRGAN, on your Mac's GPU and Neural Engine (no picture leaves it). There are two models: General (5 MB, fast, good for most pictures) and x4plus (67 MB, sharper photos, slower). Download them in Settings › AI models, which was Settings › Background. Transparency, the color profile and metadata are kept, and the result is saved as name (4×).ext.
  • The wheel without a drag. Select files in Finder or on the desktop and hold Control for a moment. The wheel opens for them and stays up:
    • Point at a slice, or light one with W A S D.
    • Tap Control (or press Return, or click) to run it. On the hub, a tap opens the lit ring.
    • Hold Control to close the wheel. Esc goes back to the hub, then closes.
    • The first time, macOS asks whether Lemon may control Finder: that's how Lemon reads which files are selected.
  • Control is the wheel key (it was Shift). Hold it while dragging, as before. Shift, or any other key, can still be picked in Settings › Wheel.
  • Your own sizes. A preset's format can be Keep the original format (resize pictures) with a longest side, so pictures shrink in their own format. The built-in 4K / Full HD / HD / SD sizes are listed in Settings › Presets and can be duplicated.
  • Fixes. Lemon no longer uses a third of a CPU core in the background after macOS switches its key listener off (this was also in 0.4.0). ⌘-Tab and other ⌘ shortcuts work while the wheel is up.

Requirements

  • A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later). Intel Macs aren't supported by this build.
  • macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

Install

With Homebrew: brew install --cask kataruna/tap/lemon (or brew upgrade --cask lemon).

By hand:

  1. Download Lemon-0.5.0-mac.zip below and double-click it to unzip.

  2. Drag Lemon.app into your Applications folder (replace the old one if you have it).

  3. Open Lemon. The first time, macOS stops it, because Lemon isn't from the App Store or notarized by Apple:

    • macOS 15 Sequoia or later: a dialog says “Lemon” Not Opened. Click Done, open System Settings › Privacy & Security, scroll down to “Lemon” was blocked to protect your Mac, click Open Anyway and confirm with your password or Touch ID. Then click Open Anyway once more.
    • macOS 14 Sonoma: in Finder, Control-click (or right-click) Lemon.app, choose Open, then click Open in the dialog.
    • Or, in Terminal: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Lemon.app, then open Lemon normally.

You only do this once; after that Lemon opens like any other app.

  4. Lemon asks for Accessibility access (System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility). It uses it for keys on the wheel (Tab, the number keys, W A S D and Esc), for a wheel key other than Control or Shift, and for holding Control over a Finder selection. Dragging with Control or Shift held works without it.

  5. Lemon lives in the menu bar (the lemon icon). Closing the window keeps it running there so the wheel still works; quit from that menu.

Converters

The welcome guide installs these for you. To do it by hand, with Homebrew:

brew install imagemagick ffmpeg
brew install pandoc ghostscript
brew install --cask libreoffice

Formats light up as their tools are found; no restart needed. Background removal works out of the box with Apple Vision. The BiRefNet and Real-ESRGAN models are downloaded in Settings › AI models.
