Lemon - Windows 0.6.0

Choose a tag to compare

@Kataruna Kataruna released this 30 Oct 17:50

Lemon for Windows 10 (2004 or later) and 11, 64-bit.

What's new in 0.6.0

  • A tidier Presets page. A strip on the left picks Images, Resize, Audio, Video or Documents, and only that category is listed, with your own presets pinned on top. Each preset says what it does ("WebP · quality 80 · up to 1920 px"). The strip can collapse to icons.
  • Remove background and Upscale in the right-click menu. Remove background, Upscale 2× and Upscale 4× appear for files they work on, once a model is downloaded. Lines now split the menu into groups.
  • The wheel key can be Ctrl, or one side of the keyboard. With Shift, Ctrl or Alt as the key, a Side list picks Either, Left or Right; the other side keeps working as usual.
  • Setup spots what you already have. On the Optional downloads page, converters Lemon can already find are greyed out and marked "installed".
  • Faster to start. Right-clicking several files hands each one to Lemon about 25% faster, and starting Lemon uses about 20% less processor time. The downloads and the installed app are bigger for it: about 50 MB more once installed, about 4 MB more memory.
  • Fixes:
    • A file named like frame%03d.png could be saved over a different file (frame000.jpg), and the conversion then failed. If you've converted files with % in their names, check the folder they were in.
    • To PNG in the right-click menu no longer cuts out the background because you used Remove background last. Optimize likewise can't turn into a Resize or an Upscale.
    • A settings or presets file that can't be read is now kept as a .bad copy instead of being replaced by defaults.
    • Canceling cleans up partial files, and always shows as Canceled.
    • The wheel no longer fails to open for a selection when Explorer returns an empty entry.
    • A GIF from a video respects a max height, so tall videos fit.
    • Remove background reads CMYK pictures correctly.
    • Looking through a big dropped folder no longer holds up the window.
    • Quitting from the tray during a conversion asks first, even if the window was never opened.
    • A closed and reopened wheel can't pick up the files of the wheel before.

Right-click Convert with Lemon, start with Windows Ticked in setup (or later in Settings) In Settings
AI models (Remove background, Upscale) Setup can download them Downloaded in Settings

Both keep settings in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Lemon, so you can switch between them.

Install guide

Installer

  1. Download Lemon-0.6.0-Setup.exe and run it. Or use winget: winget install Kataruna.Lemon (once 0.6.0 is listed there).
  2. If Windows says "Windows protected your PC", click More info › Run anyway (Lemon isn't code-signed yet; Windows only asks once).
  3. Pick your options: the right-click menu, starting when you sign in, and on the Optional downloads page any converters and AI models you want.
  4. Finish, and Lemon starts. It installs to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Lemon. Setup quits a running Lemon for you (it asks first).

Portable

  1. Download Lemon-0.6.0-Portable.exe and put it where you like (e.g. Documents\Apps).
  2. Double-click it (same SmartScreen note as above). The first launch takes a few seconds while it unpacks to %TEMP%\.net\Lemon; later launches are instant.
  3. Optional, in Settings (gear, top right): the right-click menu, start with Windows, and AI models. These point at the file where it is now: if you move or rename it, switch them off and on again.

First steps

  • Batch: drop files or folders on the window (or Add files), pick a preset per file or Set all to, click Convert. Results are saved next to the originals (or a folder you choose in Settings › Output).
  • Conversion wheel: while Lemon runs (minimized or in the tray is fine), drag files anywhere and shake the mouse or press Alt. Drop on a format to convert right away, or on the lemon to queue. Or select files in File Explorer and hold Alt (see above). Switch rings with the chips under the wheel, Tab, the number keys or the scroll wheel.
  • Wheel tab: look (themes, blur, opacity, center emoji), your own rings and commands, the Convert ring per file kind, and where the wheel opens, with a live preview.
  • Closing the window keeps Lemon in the notification area so the wheel keeps working; right-click the lemon by the clock to quit.

Optional tools

Images (PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, TIFF, BMP, ICO, HEIC input, PDF output) work out of the box. For more, install these free tools (Setup's Optional downloads page can do the first three); Lemon names the missing one when you add a file it can't convert, and finds tools without a restart.

For Install (PowerShell)
Audio and video, Optimize for videos winget install Gyan.FFmpeg
Documents (DOCX, ODT, RTF, HTML, Markdown, EPUB) winget install JohnMacFarlane.Pandoc
Office files to PDF winget install TheDocumentFoundation.LibreOffice
Optimize for PDFs Ghostscript, from ghostscript.com

Updating and uninstalling

  • Update: run a newer Setup over this one (it quits Lemon for you), or replace the portable file. Settings, presets and models are kept.
  • Uninstall: Settings › Apps › Installed apps › Lemon › Uninstall (also removes the right-click menu and start with Windows). Portable: switch those two off in Lemon's Settings, quit, delete the file.
  • Settings, presets and models stay in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Lemon; delete that folder to remove them too.

If something's off

  • No wheel: make sure Lemon is running (lemon by the clock) and that shaking or a key is on in Wheel › Opening the wheel. Drag actual files (or, with a command for links, a link).
  • No Cut out ring, or no Upscale on the Resize ring: download a model in Settings › AI models.
  • A conversion failed: the error is on the file's row; details are in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Lemon\errors.log. Please attach it to an issue.

AI models (v1)

Choose a tag to compare

@Kataruna Kataruna released this 30 Oct 05:59

Real-ESRGAN weights (BSD-3-Clause, xinntao/Real-ESRGAN) exported to ONNX by windows/packaging/export-upscale-models.py. Downloaded by Lemon on first use of Upscale; SHA-256s are pinned in the apps.

Lemon - Windows 0.5.0

Choose a tag to compare

@Kataruna Kataruna released this 27 Oct 14:44

Lemon for Windows 10 (2004 or later) and 11, 64-bit. Same version as Lemon for Mac 0.5.0.

What's new in 0.5.0

  • AI upscale. The Resize ring can now enlarge pictures 2× or 4× with Real-ESRGAN: AI upscale (fast, 5 MB model) or Best quality (67 MB). It runs on your graphics card when it can, otherwise on the processor. Download the models in Settings › AI models (was Background remover), or tick them in Setup.
  • The wheel for files you've selected. Select files or folders in File Explorer or on the desktop and hold Alt for a moment: the wheel opens under the pointer for them, no dragging needed. It stays up once you let go:
    • Point at a format, or light one with A / D (or W / S, or the arrow keys).
    • Tap Alt, press Enter or click to run it. On the hub that opens the lit ring.
    • Hold Alt again or click outside the wheel to close it. Esc goes back to the hub.
  • Alt is the wheel key (was Space; if you were on Space, you're moved to Alt once). Shift works too. Letting go of Alt doesn't open Explorer's menu, and Tab with the wheel up turns the ring instead of switching windows.
  • Your own resize sizes. In Presets, pick Keep the original format (resize pictures) and a max width and/or height. The built-in 4K / Full HD / HD / SD sizes can be duplicated as a start.
  • Setup has an Optional downloads page. Converters (FFmpeg, Pandoc, LibreOffice through winget) and all four AI models, with the ones you already have greyed out.
  • Lighter and faster.
    • Big batches keep the window responsive: with 2,000 files the window's own work dropped by more than half.
    • Upscaling uses about 85% less memory per picture.
    • Lemon hands memory back to Windows after a batch.
  • Fixes:
    • A phone photo stored on its side is now resized by its real (upright) size.
    • Dropping a waiting file on the wheel no longer changes the default for new files.
    • A locked settings file no longer stops Lemon from starting.
    • CMYK pictures upscale correctly.
    • A LibreOffice cleanup hiccup can't turn a finished document into an error.

Lemon - Mac 0.5.0

Choose a tag to compare

@Kataruna Kataruna released this 27 Oct 07:58

Lemon for macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon.

What's new in 0.5.0

  • AI upscale. The Resize ring can now enlarge pictures 2× or 4× with Real-ESRGAN, on your Mac's GPU and Neural Engine (no picture leaves it). There are two models: General (5 MB, fast, good for most pictures) and x4plus (67 MB, sharper photos, slower). Download them in Settings › AI models, which was Settings › Background. Transparency, the color profile and metadata are kept, and the result is saved as name (4×).ext.
  • The wheel without a drag. Select files in Finder or on the desktop and hold Control for a moment. The wheel opens for them and stays up:
    • Point at a slice, or light one with W A S D.
    • Tap Control (or press Return, or click) to run it. On the hub, a tap opens the lit ring.
    • Hold Control to close the wheel. Esc goes back to the hub, then closes.
    • The first time, macOS asks whether Lemon may control Finder: that's how Lemon reads which files are selected.
  • Control is the wheel key (it was Shift). Hold it while dragging, as before. Shift, or any other key, can still be picked in Settings › Wheel.
  • Your own sizes. A preset's format can be Keep the original format (resize pictures) with a longest side, so pictures shrink in their own format. The built-in 4K / Full HD / HD / SD sizes are listed in Settings › Presets and can be duplicated.
  • Fixes. Lemon no longer uses a third of a CPU core in the background after macOS switches its key listener off (this was also in 0.4.0). ⌘-Tab and other ⌘ shortcuts work while the wheel is up.

Requirements

  • A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later). Intel Macs aren't supported by this build.
  • macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

Install

With Homebrew: brew install --cask kataruna/tap/lemon (or brew upgrade --cask lemon).

By hand:

  1. Download Lemon-0.5.0-mac.zip below and double-click it to unzip.

  2. Drag Lemon.app into your Applications folder (replace the old one if you have it).

  3. Open Lemon. The first time, macOS stops it, because Lemon isn't from the App Store or notarized by Apple:

    • macOS 15 Sequoia or later: a dialog says “Lemon” Not Opened. Click Done, open System Settings › Privacy & Security, scroll down to “Lemon” was blocked to protect your Mac, click Open Anyway and confirm with your password or Touch ID. Then click Open Anyway once more.
    • macOS 14 Sonoma: in Finder, Control-click (or right-click) Lemon.app, choose Open, then click Open in the dialog.
    • Or, in Terminal: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Lemon.app, then open Lemon normally.

You only do this once; after that Lemon opens like any other app.

  4. Lemon asks for Accessibility access (System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility). It uses it for keys on the wheel (Tab, the number keys, W A S D and Esc), for a wheel key other than Control or Shift, and for holding Control over a Finder selection. Dragging with Control or Shift held works without it.

  5. Lemon lives in the menu bar (the lemon icon). Closing the window keeps it running there so the wheel still works; quit from that menu.

Converters

The welcome guide installs these for you. To do it by hand, with Homebrew:

brew install imagemagick ffmpeg
brew install pandoc ghostscript
brew install --cask libreoffice

Formats light up as their tools are found; no restart needed. Background removal works out of the box with Apple Vision. The BiRefNet and Real-ESRGAN models are downloaded in Settings › AI models.

Lemon - Windows 0.4.1

Choose a tag to compare

@Kataruna Kataruna released this 25 Oct 18:32

Lemon for Windows 10 (2004 or later) and 11, 64-bit.

What's new in 0.4.1

  • Ready for winget. Lemon is on its way to the Windows Package Manager as Kataruna.Lemon (winget install Kataruna.Lemon once it's listed).
  • Updating is smoother. Setup now quits a running Lemon for you (it asks first) instead of telling you to quit it. A silent install, as winget does, starts Lemon again in the tray afterwards and keeps your right-click menu and sign-in choices; it skips the Remove background model downloads, which you can get later in Settings › Background remover.

Everything from 0.4.0 is here too: the Commands ring for your own PowerShell commands on dragged files, folders and links, the real wheel in the welcome guide, and hints that follow your wheel settings.

@Kataruna Kataruna released this 25 Oct 17:25

Lemon for Windows 10 (2004 or later) and 11, 64-bit.

What's new in 0.4.0

  • Commands. Your own PowerShell commands on a Commands ring, for dragged files (optionally only some types, like zip), folders and links. Set them up in Settings › Wheel › Commands: placeholders such as Folder, Files in Folder, File and Link show as colored chips and are quoted for you. Shake a project folder to open it in Terminal or VS Code (wt -d {folder}, code {folder}), or a link from the browser to hand it to your own tool. A folder dragged on its own opens straight on Commands. If a command fails, a notification shows what it printed. More in DETAIL.md.
  • The welcome guide shows your real wheel, with your own Convert ring for pictures and your theme, and Windows' own file icons.

Lemon - Mac 0.4.0

Choose a tag to compare

@Kataruna Kataruna released this 25 Oct 14:41

Lemon for macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon.

What's new in 0.4.0

  • Commands ring. Run your own shell commands from the wheel. Shake a project folder to open it in your terminal (or start Claude Code there), shake a link from the browser to hand it to your own tool, or shake files to run a script on them. Set them up in Settings › Wheel › Commands.
  • Files, folders and links. Each command runs on dragged files (optionally only some types, like pdf, png), folders, or links. A folder dragged on its own opens straight on Commands.
  • Placeholder chips. In the command box, File, Folder, Files in Folder and Link show as colored chips, with buttons to insert one at the cursor. They're quoted for the shell for you.
  • Errors are shown. If a command fails, Lemon shows what it printed.
  • Examples (Ghostty, Claude Code, VS Code) are in DETAIL.md.

Requirements

  • A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later). Intel Macs aren't supported by this build.
  • macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

Install

  1. Download Lemon-0.4.0-mac.zip below and double-click it to unzip.

It uses it only for keys while you drag: Tab, the number keys and Esc on the wheel, and a wheel key other than Shift. The wheel works without it, just without those keys.

Background removal works out of the box with Apple Vision; the BiRefNet models are downloaded in Settings › Background.

Lemon - Windows 0.3.0

Choose a tag to compare

@Kataruna Kataruna released this 24 Oct 12:14

Lemon for Windows 10 (2004 or later) and 11, 64-bit.

What's new in 0.3.0

  • Welcome guide on first launch. Pick which kinds of files you want to convert (videos and music, documents, making PDFs, shrinking PDFs) and Lemon installs the free converter for you. Then an animation shows how the wheel works: drag, shake (or press your key), drop. Reopen it any time in Settings › About.
  • Update check. Lemon tells you when a newer version is out, on the Convert page and in Settings › About. Nothing installs by itself; you can turn the check off in Settings › About.
  • Wheel-opening settings (shake the mouse and/or a key) are the same in Settings and on the Wheel tab.

Which file?

Lemon-0.3.0-Setup.exe (recommended) Lemon-0.3.0-Portable.exe
What it is Installs Lemon for your user One file you run from anywhere, nothing to install
Admin rights Not needed Not needed
Start menu entry and uninstaller Yes No
Right-click Convert with Lemon, start with Windows Ticked in setup (or later in Settings) In Settings
Remove-background AI models Setup can download them Downloaded in Settings

Both keep settings in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Lemon, so you can switch between them.

Install guide

Installer

  1. Download Lemon-0.3.0-Setup.exe and run it.
  2. If Windows says "Windows protected your PC", click More info › Run anyway (Lemon isn't code-signed yet; Windows only asks once).
  3. Pick your options:
    • "Convert with Lemon" in the right-click menu: convert straight from File Explorer.
    • Start Lemon when I sign in: keeps the conversion wheel ready. The wheel only works while Lemon is running.
    • Download the AI model for Remove background: BiRefNet Lite (224 MB, recommended) is ticked; BiRefNet full quality (973 MB, needs more memory) is optional.
  4. Finish, and Lemon starts. It installs to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Lemon.

Portable

  1. Download Lemon-0.3.0-Portable.exe and put it where you like (e.g. Documents\Apps).
  2. Double-click it (same SmartScreen note as above). The first launch takes about 2 s while it unpacks to %TEMP%\.net\Lemon; later launches are instant.
  3. Optional, in Settings (gear, top right): the right-click menu, start with Windows, and Background remover models. These point at the file where it is now: if you move or rename it, switch them off and on again.

Check the download (optional)

First steps

  • Batch: drop files or folders on the window (or Add files), pick a preset per file or Set all to, click Convert. Results are saved next to the originals (or a folder you choose in Settings › Output).
  • Conversion wheel: while Lemon runs (minimized or in the tray is fine), drag files anywhere and shake the mouse or press Space. Drop on a format to convert right away, or on the lemon to queue. Switch rings with the chips under the wheel, Tab, the number keys or the scroll wheel.
  • Wheel tab: look (themes, blur, opacity, center emoji), your own rings, the Convert ring per file kind, and where the wheel opens, with a live preview.

For more, install these free tools; Lemon names the missing one when you add a file it can't convert, and finds tools without a restart.

For Install (PowerShell)
Audio and video, Optimize for videos winget install Gyan.FFmpeg
Documents (DOCX, ODT, RTF, HTML, Markdown, EPUB) winget install JohnMacFarlane.Pandoc
Office files to PDF winget install TheDocumentFoundation.LibreOffice
Optimize for PDFs Ghostscript, from ghostscript.com

Updating and uninstalling

  • Update: run a newer Setup over this one (quit Lemon first: right-click the lemon › Quit Lemon), or replace the portable file.

  • No wheel: make sure Lemon is running (lemon by the clock) and that shaking or a key is on in Settings › Conversion wheel. Drag actual files, not text.
  • No Cut out ring: download a model in Settings › Background remover.
  • A conversion failed: the error is on the file's row; details are in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Lemon\errors.log. Please attach it to an issue.

Lemon - Mac 0.3.0

@Kataruna Kataruna released this 24 Oct 12:57

Lemon for macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon. The same version as Windows 0.3.0.

What's new in 0.3.0

  • Welcome guide on first launch. Pick which kinds of files you want to convert (pictures, videos and music, documents, making PDFs, shrinking PDFs); Add installs the free converter with Homebrew in a Terminal window. Then an animation on the real wheel shows how it works: drag, shake (or your key), drop. Reopen it any time in Settings › About.
  • Update check. Lemon tells you when a newer Mac version is out, at the top of the main window and in Settings › About. Nothing installs by itself; you can turn the check off in Settings › About.
  • Choose how the wheel opens. Settings › Wheel › Opening the wheel: shake the mouse, a key, or both. Shift (held) is the default; any other key, like Space, is pressed once while dragging.
  • Esc closes the wheel without cancelling the drag. Drop the files anywhere, or open the wheel again.

Requirements

  • A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later). Intel Macs aren't supported by this build.
  • macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

Install

  1. Download Lemon-0.3.0-mac.zip below and double-click it to unzip.

  • Wheel customization with a live preview: themes (incl. your Windows accent), tint, glass blur, opacity, center emoji, text color; up to 5 rings of your own; the Convert ring per kind of file; the hub for switching rings.
  • Batch queue with per-file presets and parallel conversion; your own presets on the Presets tab.
  • Progress in the tray: the tray lemon becomes a progress ring while files convert, and a notification reports the batch when it finishes in the background.
