Squid Server 0.1 (beta)
NOT AN OFFICIAL MINECRAFT PRODUCT. NOT APPROVED BY OR ASSOCIATED WITH MOJANG OR MICROSOFT.
Beta. Squid is still being tested, so things can change before 1.0.
The Squid Server runs a Minecraft server with Squid, so players who have Squid get voice chat on it. Players without Squid can still join: to them it's a normal Minecraft server.
Starting it
- Unzip it where you want the server to live. You need Java 25 or newer (
java -version), from adoptium.net if yours is older. - Windows: double-click
start.bat. Mac or Linux:sh start.sh - The first time, Squid downloads Minecraft's server straight from Mojang (and checks Mojang's fingerprint), then Minecraft stops and makes
eula.txt. Read Mojang's EULA (the link is inside). If you agree, changeeula=falsetoeula=trueyourself and start it again.
Everything else is a normal Minecraft server: server.properties, worlds, whitelist and ops all work the same.
Voice chat
On by default. Settings are in config/squid-voice.properties:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
enabled=true |
false turns voice chat off |
mode=proximity |
proximity (players near each other), world (everyone) or groups (only people in the same group) |
distance=48 |
how far voices carry in proximity mode, 8 to 128 blocks |
groups=true |
whether players can make groups |
Voice only goes to players who have Squid, and the server never records or saves any of it.

Squid Kit 0.1 (beta)
NOT AN OFFICIAL MINECRAFT PRODUCT. NOT APPROVED BY OR ASSOCIATED WITH MOJANG OR MICROSOFT.
Beta. Squid is still being tested, so things can change before 1.0.
The Squid Kit lets you make Squid mods in a code editor like VS Code or IntelliJ, without Kelp. If you use Kelp, you don't need it: New Mod → Kind: Project gives you a project that's already set up.

Put the folder in a Squid instance's mods folder and play. Squid builds it as the game starts, with no build tool. In Kelp, Pack turns it into one small .squid file for sharing.
