RetroStoneOS 0.1.5 pro-storage build 19 (RetroStone2 / Pro)
Unofficial build of RetroStoneOS for the RetroStone2 and RetroStone2 Pro, built from the pro-storage
branch of this fork (RetroStoneOS 0.1.5 + this fork's features). It is not an official RetroStoneOS release: for
that, use PaddleStroke/RetroStoneOS.
New in build 19: RetroStoneOS 0.1.5
- No more stuck buttons. The face buttons and the D-pad are now read every 5 ms, as the shoulder buttons
already were. Before, a release could be lost while rocking the D-pad, and the button stayed "held" until it was
pressed again (upstream issue PaddleStroke#10). - Bluetooth controllers: Settings > Network > Bluetooth devices (once Bluetooth is on). Pair a controller
found nearby, then connect, disconnect or forget it. Paired controllers reconnect by themselves. Stadia
controllers get rumble. - PiGRRL 2 fixes (other board).
Native games
- USB import and network upload now know the
roms/nativefolder. - The Native games support of this fork is proposed to RetroStoneOS:
PaddleStroke/RetroStoneOS#14.
Super Mario 64 and Star Fox 64 (native, build them yourself)
Rebuild them with the current ports/ scripts (no system update needed for these):
- Both: Select + Start quits at once, as in the emulators.
- Star Fox 64 (ports/starship)
now runs on a RetroStone2. It starts with fast settings: the game's own frame rate, 320x240, bilinear filtering.
Two crashes are fixed (with frame smoothing off, and a freeze after a crash). Start skips a level's
opening scene, also on planets not cleared yet.
As always, this release contains no game and no game data.
Update
- From build 12 to 18: Settings > System update offers this build.
- From build 11 or older: flash this image once.
Status on hardware
Not yet tested on hardware: the 0.1.5 changes are new in this fork. Build 18, native Super Mario 64 and Star Fox 64
work on a RetroStone2 Pro. Please report problems with the files in rsos/logs/ on the SD card.

RetroStoneOS 0.1.4 pro-storage build 18 (RetroStone2 / Pro)
Unofficial build of RetroStoneOS for the RetroStone2 and RetroStone2 Pro, built from the pro-storage
branch of this fork (RetroStoneOS 0.1.4 + this fork's features). It is not an official RetroStoneOS release: for
that, use PaddleStroke/RetroStoneOS.
New in build 18: ready for more native ports
- One standard gamepad for native games (
rsos-gamepad): the RetroStone2's buttons, shoulder buttons and
optional analog stick are three separate devices, and many game ports only read one SDL controller. A game's
launch script can now turn them into one standard virtual gamepad (positional layout, D-pad, stick, C/Z as the
stick clicks), stopped with the game. See
docs/native-games.md. - The libraries of the HarbourMasters ports (Ogg/Vorbis, libzip, tinyxml2, spdlog): the ports built on
libultraship (Star Fox 64 first) need them on the console.
Star Fox 64 (Starship): work in progress
This fork adds an OpenGL ES 2.0 mode to libultraship, the engine of Starship, Ship of Harkinian and the other
HarbourMasters ports (they need OpenGL ES 3.0; the RetroStone2's Mali-400 has 2.0). Starship now builds for the
RetroStone2, with its data made on your PC from your own ROM:
ports/starship/README.md.
It has not run on a RetroStone2 yet: this build is what it needs to be tried.
As always, this release contains no game and no game data.
Super Mario 64 (native, build it yourself)
Since build 17, ports/sm64 follows the N64 emulator's buttons and your N64 remaps, reads the analog
stick of the Pro, and no longer crashes after about a minute (a memory alignment bug of sm64-port on 32-bit
ARM). Rebuild with the current ports/sm64/build-sm64.sh and copy the new sm64.us to your card. No system update
is needed for those fixes. See
ports/sm64/README.md.

RetroStoneOS 0.1.4 pro-storage build 17 (RetroStone2 / Pro)
Unofficial build of RetroStoneOS for the RetroStone2 and RetroStone2 Pro, built from the pro-storage
branch of this fork (RetroStoneOS 0.1.4 + this fork's features). It is not an official RetroStoneOS release: for
that, use PaddleStroke/RetroStoneOS.
New in build 17: Native games
- Native games, a new system in the menu: programs built for the console itself (ARM), started without an
emulator. One launch script per game inroms/native/(My Game.sh), the game's files next to it.
See how to get native ports and
docs/native-games.md. - Select + Start held for a second goes back to the menu. Sleep (power key) freezes the game and turns the
screen off; a power-off stops it; the automatic power-off waits while it runs. - SDL2 is now part of the system (KMS/DRM with the Mali-400's GLES2, ALSA sound), which most game ports use.
Super Mario 64 (build it yourself, from your own ROM)
This release does not contain Super Mario 64 or any of its data, and never will. The fork has a script that
builds sm64-port for the RetroStone2 on your PC, from your own US
ROM, as a native game: see
ports/sm64/README.md.
Copy the result to your own SD card (roms/native/) and keep it to yourself. Controls: A/B = A/B, L1/L2/Z = Z,
R1 = R, X/Y/C/R2 = C buttons, D-pad or the Pro's analog stick = the stick.
Also new: RetroStoneOS 0.1.4
- The Pro storage features as reviewed and merged by the RetroStoneOS maintainer: the internal eMMC and the M.2
slot stay off until you turn them on in Settings > Storage (a faster start); safer starter card / full
card conversions; Move games never deletes anything after a failed or cancelled copy. - The Atari 800 / 5200 core, the held-button fixes, more systems known to the USB import.
Update
- From build 12 to 16: Settings > System update offers this build.
- From build 11 or older: flash this image once.
Status on hardware
Super Mario 64 works on a RetroStone2 Pro as a native game: full speed, and it looks great. The first version
of the build script did not read the Pro's analog stick: if yours does nothing, rebuild with the current
ports/sm64/build-sm64.sh and copy the new roms/native/sm64/sm64.us to the card (no new system update needed).
Native games are also covered by the menu's automatic tests. Please report problems with the files in
rsos/logs/ on the SD card.
Which other N64 ports can come next
ports/README.md has the step by
step guide and a table of the N64 PC ports against the RetroStone2's GPU (OpenGL ES 2.0). Star Fox 64 (Starship),
Zelda (Ship of Harkinian) and the other libultraship ports need OpenGL ES 3.0 and SDL3 today: a GLES2 renderer for
them is being looked at, Star Fox 64 first.

RetroStoneOS 0.1.3 pro-storage build 16 (RetroStone2 / Pro)
Unofficial build of RetroStoneOS for the RetroStone2 and RetroStone2 Pro, built from the pro-storage
branch of this fork (RetroStoneOS 0.1.3 + the pro-storage features). It is not an official RetroStoneOS release:
for that, use PaddleStroke/RetroStoneOS.
New in build 16: CPU speed
- Settings > Power > CPU speed: Normal (960 MHz, the A20's own top speed), Faster (1008 MHz at
1.45 V, the step Allwinner's own A20 kernels use) or Fastest (1056 MHz at 1.5 V; above the A20's tables,
so not every chip takes it). - Safe to try: a new CPU speed counts only after an orderly shutdown. If the console freezes, crashes or
is turned off by holding the power button, the next start runs at the normal speed and the menu says
"Last faster CPU try failed" until you pick a level again. - Checked under load: the first start at a new level runs a 20-second test on both CPU cores at full load and
compares every result. If one is wrong, the level is marked failed and the console restarts at the normal speed. - Settings > Power > Speed sets memory speed and CPU speed together: Normal, Faster (432 MHz memory +
1008 MHz CPU) or Fastest (480 + 1056). It shows Custom when you set them apart. Each one keeps its own
fallback: a CPU that fails goes back to 960 MHz and leaves the memory speed as it is. - The temperature limit (75 °C) still slows the CPU down. The GPU speed is unchanged.
- Fix: the menu self-test for the WiFi network list, and the translation template is brought up to date
(the new strings show in English in the other languages until they are translated).
Update
- From build 12, 13, 14 or 15: Settings > System update offers this build.
- From build 11 or older: flash this image once.
Status on hardware
CPU speed and Speed were tested on a RetroStone2 Pro (stable at the new levels). The picture features of build 15
were tested from a PC and in the menu preview. Builds 12-14 work on a RetroStone2 Pro (System update from build 12
to 13 confirmed). Please report problems with the files in rsos/logs/ on the SD card.

RetroStoneOS 0.1.3 pro-storage build 15 (RetroStone2 / Pro)
Unofficial build of RetroStoneOS for the RetroStone2 and RetroStone2 Pro, built from the pro-storage
branch of this fork (RetroStoneOS 0.1.3 + the pro-storage features). It is not an official RetroStoneOS release:
for that, use PaddleStroke/RetroStoneOS.
New in build 15: game pictures
- Pictures like the RetroStone games: Settings > Game lists > Picture style = Title screen (the
game's title screen, 4:3, fills the picture frame like the built-in games; the default) or Box art. A game
without a title screen on the server gets its box art. Changing the style offers to download your pictures
again in the new style (pictures you added yourself stay). - Smarter matching: names with the disc as plain words ("Final Fantasy VII Disc 1", "Game - CD2"),
accents (Pokémon), apostrophes, "The", "&" and Roman numbers (VII = 7) now find their picture; multi-disc games
prefer the same disc's picture. - Choose cover (SELECT on a game): the 20 closest names on the server, Search by name..., pick one and it
shows right away. Use my own picture... tells you the file name and folder for a PNG of your own (it wins
over a downloaded one; 640 x 480 looks like the RetroStone games). Remove the picture. - Choose missing covers (Settings > Game lists): every game without a picture, one by one; done ones get a ✓.
- The server's name lists are kept for a week on the card: searching is instant after the first time.
- Group multi-disc games also finds "Name Disc 1", "Name - CD2", "Name_Disc_2 (USA)" and "[Disc 1 of 2]".
Update
- From build 12, 13 or 14: Settings > System update offers this build.
- From build 11 or older: flash this image once.
Status on hardware
The new picture features are not yet tested on hardware: they were tested against the libretro server from a PC
and in the menu preview. Builds 12-14 work on a RetroStone2 Pro (System update from build 12 to 13 confirmed).

RetroStoneOS 0.1.3 pro-storage build 14 (RetroStone2 / Pro)
Unofficial build of RetroStoneOS for the RetroStone2 and RetroStone2 Pro, built from the pro-storage
branch of this fork (RetroStoneOS 0.1.3 + the pro-storage features). It is not an official RetroStoneOS release:
for that, use PaddleStroke/RetroStoneOS.
New in build 14
- Choose your WiFi from a list: Settings > Network > WiFi network now shows the networks around you
(WiFi is switched on by itself), strongest first, each with "secured" or "open" and its signal strength. Pick
one: the password is asked only when the network has one, and the console connects right away ("connecting...",
then "connected"). Other network... is for a hidden network; Search again looks again. - Changing to another network takes effect at once (before, only after switching WiFi off and on).
- Network names with quotes or backslashes are saved correctly.
The console's WiFi chip (AP6210) works on 2.4 GHz only: 5 GHz-only networks do not appear.
Update
- From build 12 or 13: Settings > System update offers this build. Updating from build 12 to 13 that way was
confirmed on a RetroStone2 Pro. - From build 11 or older: flash this image once (those builds look for official updates).
Status on hardware
The WiFi list is new and not yet tested on hardware (it was tested with the console's own BusyBox tools and in the
menu preview). Build 13's network addresses and everything from build 12 work on a RetroStone2 Pro. Please report
problems with the files in rsos/logs/ on the SD card.

New in build 13
- Settings > Network shows the console's address next to the WiFi and Ethernet switches once they are
connected (for example192.168.1.23), and "not connected" while one is on without an address, so you can see
at a glance whether the console joined your network. - The "please wait..." of these switches (while WiFi, Ethernet or Bluetooth turns on or off) is now shown too.
Update
- From build 12: Settings > System update offers this build (signed with this fork's key).
- From build 11 or older: flash this image once (those builds look for official updates).
Status on hardware
Not tested on hardware yet: build 13 only adds the addresses on the Network page to build 12, which was tested on
a RetroStone2 Pro. It is also the first update delivered through System update from this fork. Please report
problems with the files in rsos/logs/ on the SD card.

RetroStoneOS 0.1.3 pro-storage build 12 (RetroStone2 / Pro)
Unofficial build of RetroStoneOS for the RetroStone2 and RetroStone2 Pro, built from the pro-storage
branch of this fork (RetroStoneOS 0.1.3 + the features below). It is not an official RetroStoneOS release: for
that, use PaddleStroke/RetroStoneOS.
New in build 12
- Regular or Pro, found by itself: the first start of the card checks once for the internal eMMC (only the Pro
has one). On a Pro, the internal storage and the M.2 slot are switched on right away; on a regular
RetroStone2, the internal storage options are hidden (the M.2 options stay). Settings > Storage shows the
Model (also in System information) and has Detect the model again. - System update now follows this fork: Settings > System update looks for new builds here, and installs only
packages signed with this fork's key (an official RetroStoneOS update is not offered any more, and could not be
installed). Builds are numbered 0.1.3.12, 0.1.3.13, ... - Up to date with RetroStoneOS 0.1.3 (upstream
main).
Coming from build 10 or 11: flash this image once (those builds still look for official updates). From build
12 on, later builds can come through Settings > System update, which offers full releases of this fork. An update on a console that starts through the SD starter
card is not tested yet.
Everything since 0.1.2
RetroStone2 Pro storage (Settings > Storage): the eMMC and M.2 switches work; Install to internal storage
(with or without your games), the SD card then becomes a starter card (the A20's boot ROM does not start the
eMMC 5.0 by itself), Make this SD card a full system again undoes it; games on the eMMC, the SD card and an
M.2 SATA SSD appear together; Erase it and use it for games; Import games with Copy games to; Move
games between drives.
Game lists: Download game covers (libretro thumbnail server, as RetroArch does; also in the background),
Group multi-disc games, Rename this game (saves, states, cover and play time follow).
Memory speed (Settings > Power): Normal 384 / Faster 432 / Fastest 480 MHz, each checked by a memory test,
with an automatic fallback.
System information > Credits.
Status on hardware
Tested on a RetroStone2 Pro and working, including the model check (found as a Pro, internal storage and M.2
on by themselves) and every feature of builds 10 and 11. The regular-model path passed the boot-script emulator
test (45 checks, both models) but has not been on a regular RetroStone2 yet. Please report problems with the files
in rsos/logs/ on the SD card.

RetroStoneOS 0.1.3 Pro storage (build 11)
Unofficial build of RetroStoneOS 0.1.3 for the RetroStone2, built from the pro-storage branch of
this fork. It is not an official RetroStoneOS release: for that, use
PaddleStroke/RetroStoneOS.
New in build 11
- Based on RetroStoneOS 0.1.3: four new built-in games (Goat Gorge, Lemur Leap, Prickle Patch, Puffin Plunge)
and the Beaver Rush text fix, from the official release. - All the features of build 10 (below), unchanged.
Features (on top of the official release)
RetroStone2 Pro storage (Settings > Storage)
- The Internal eMMC and M.2 SATA drive switches work (in the official 0.1.2 and 0.1.3 they have no effect).
- Install to internal storage, with or without your games. The A20's boot ROM does not start the eMMC on its
own (eMMC 5.0), so the SD card becomes a starter card: it keeps the start-up files and your games, and the
system runs from the eMMC. Make this SD card a full system again undoes it. - Games on the eMMC, the SD card and an M.2 SATA SSD appear together in the game lists; Erase it and use it
for games prepares a drive; Import games has Copy games to.
Game lists (Settings > Game lists): Download game covers from the libretro thumbnail server (as RetroArch
does; needs WiFi; arcade not yet), Group multi-disc games.
Memory speed (Settings > Power): Normal 384 MHz / Faster 432 MHz / Fastest 480 MHz, each start at a faster
speed checked by a memory test; if the console freezes, hold the power button: it starts at the normal speed by
itself.

Status on hardware (RetroStone2 Pro)
Every feature listed here was tested on a RetroStone2 Pro and works in build 10 (on 0.1.2). Build 11 is the same
code merged onto 0.1.3 (the official changes are only the games); this image itself is not yet tested on
hardware, hence a pre-release. Please report problems with the files in rsos/logs/ on the SD card.

PaddleStroke/RetroStoneOS.
New in build 10
- Move games between drives (Settings > Storage): pick the drive the games come from (internal storage, SD card
or M.2), choose Copy games to, and optionally Delete from … after copying to move them. The originals
are deleted only after everything was written to the other drive and checked byte for byte; BIOS files and
saves never move. - Rename this game (SELECT on a game): the game's saves, save states, cover, favorite and play time follow the
new name; then Look for a cover with the new name now? - Game covers in the background: press B on the download page and keep playing; a message tells when it is
done.
Everything since 0.1.2
