Paper Cut 0.4.0

Choose a tag to compare

@LLCOOLT LLCOOLT released this 05 Nov 21:51

Paper Cut 0.4.0 brings versus battles, Mario's side against Luigi's on one screen, online or against a computer that plays every Star Power, and Paper Cut's own open world, a randomizer where Rogueport and all eight chapters open in any order. Luigi, Peach or Bowser can take Mario's place for the whole game, name and all. The title screen gets a menu of its own (Play, Modes, Online, Settings), and the new Modes page gathers an action-command dojo, the dungeon master, the boss rush, party games and more. Up to four players can play together, Luigi can join Mario as a second hero in Brothers mode, and Mario and his partners have duo moves. Online play moves into the game's own Start menu, with a room list, paper notes, leaderboards checked by replays and a weekly raid boss. It also adds Master Quest, a Director's Cut of what the game left out, things to do after the story, costumes, paper looks for the picture, button icons for your controller, a new launcher, Lua mods, and much more. It plays the Japanese (G8MJ01), US (G8ME01) and European (G8MP01) versions of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, from the game's C decompilation, with no emulator.

Highlights

  • Versus battles against a friend or the computer.
  • Paper Cut's open world: chapters in any order (US).
  • Play as Luigi, Peach or Bowser, all the way through.
  • A title menu: Play, Modes, Online and Settings.
  • Modes: a dojo, dungeon master, boss rush and more.
  • Four players, and Luigi as a hero in Brothers mode.
  • Master Quest, and a Director's Cut of what was cut.
  • Online in the Start menu, easier to host and join.
  • A paper-theatre launcher and a new star icon.
  • Button icons for your controller; a touch C-stick.

What's new

The title menu and the launcher

  • A title menu: after Press Start, four buttons along the bottom of the title screen, in the Start menu's own look, with the logo and the whole cast still in view: Play (your files, as before), Modes, Online and Settings. Stick, D-pad, keys, mouse or a tap move through them. Settings and Online open the Start menu's own tabs over the title, with no file loaded. General > Title menu turns it off, for Start straight to the files as in the original.
  • Modes from the title: party games and battles (versus battles, the raid boss, the quiz party, Tattle cards, the dungeon master, the boss rush with a loadout, battle puzzles, the dojo and the fun toggles) on a file of their own that is never saved, with the Tattle Log lent for card decks. When the mode is over, you're back at the title.
  • The launcher, dressed as the game's menus: paper windows on a stage, the Start menu's coloured tabs, a white glove that glides to whatever is chosen, torn-paper buttons, a page turn between tabs and soft paper sounds (General > Launcher sounds). Each disc shows its own banner with a JP, US or EU tag. A short window keeps Play in sight, and on a phone the tabs shrink to fit.
  • A cut-paper theatre: the launcher's stage is redrawn in layers of paper: pleated red curtains tied back with gold tasselled ropes, a valance of swags and fringe, a paper moon and stars on strings, clouds, and stage boards with footlights. The curtains and stars sway gently (they keep still when your system's animation effects are off), and the pop-up opening builds it all in turn.
  • The Paper Cut wordmark and a new icon: the title on the launcher is a crafted cut-paper wordmark, and Paper Cut's icon is a gold paper star snipped out by scissors, on every platform (with Android's themed icons too).
  • Launcher look (General): Paper Cut's own look (the default, the same before any disc is added), or a trial of the game's own art, made from your disc.

Versus battles

  • Mario against Luigi: Mario and his partners against Luigi and his, two players on one screen, in the Glitz Pit's ring or on seven battle stages from the chapters. Start one from the Modes page (the Start menu's Settings tab, or the title menu's Modes).
  • The set-up: a page in the game's windows, a side each and a cursor each with two controllers. Each side gets a level (its level-ups shared out among HP, FP and BP), boots and hammer, three partners and their rank, badges up to its BP, and up to six items. The rules: the stage, a turn timer (15, 30 or 60 seconds a command), whether the luck badges count, and whether Showstopper knocks out.
  • Fair-play rules: by default Showstopper takes a sixth to a third of each foe's HP instead of knocking them out (turn on "Showstopper knocks out" for the story's rule), and the luck badges are off. With one controller between two players, the side being hit guards on it.
  • Eight stages: the Glitz Pit, Petal Meadows, Hooktail Castle, Boggly Woods, Creepy Steeple, Keelhaul Key, the Palace of Shadow and the Rogueport Sewers, each one of the game's own battle stages with the audience and music of a battle there.
  • The fight: each side acts through the game's own command menu, with jumps, hammers, badge moves, partners, items, Star Powers and Tactics, and the defender guards and Superguards every hit on their own controller. As the curtain goes up, Mario and his partner run in from the left and strike a pose, then Luigi and his from the right. Luigi's HUD sits at the bottom of the screen. Afterwards Mario is back where he was, as he was.
  • Luigi's Star Powers face Mario's side: Art Attack, Clock Out, Earth Tremor and the rest hit the other side whichever brother plays them, his Stop lasts as long as Mario's, and his Sweet Treat shows his own face.
  • Against the computer: Luigi's side played by the game, easy, normal or hard. It weighs each move's damage, FP and statuses, heals when low, swaps partners when one is down, Charges, Appeals, and plays every Star Power's own action command (Art Attack's drawing, Supernova's mashing, Showstopper's buttons), as well as its difficulty allows.
  • The ladder: Mario's side against a stronger computer Luigi on each rung, each fight on the next stage, until Mario falls. The most rungs won is kept.
  • Online: the host is Mario and the guest Luigi. Both set up their side on the same page at once ("You: Mario's side" on each screen, the other player's cursor in green), and the fight plays in step on the host's stage. Versus room (the launcher's and the Start menu's Online tab) opens every game of the session straight on the set-up page.

Modes

  • A page for every mode: the Start menu's Settings tab has a Modes page of picture buttons, one per group: Party games, Battles, After the story, Every day, Story twists and Just for fun. Each opens its modes in the game's own book, with their options and their start, so a controller is all you need. The pictures are made from the game's own icons on your disc.
  • The action-command dojo (Battles): a practice battle on the Glitz Pit's ring against one of the Pit's fighters, who never falls. Each action command, guard, Superguard and Stylish move is told in frames ("3 frames early", "Perfect!") with the timing window drawn as a bar. Mario can borrow every move for it, and nothing done there stays.
  • Timing assist by command type (Accessibility): widen only the kinds of command you struggle with, set by hand or from the dojo's suggestions. Action command timing in every battle shows the dojo's window in any fight.
  • The dungeon master (Multiplayer): another player plays the enemies in the story's battles, picking each enemy's move and target from its own moves, with the damage each would do. Player 2, 3 or 4, at home or online.
  • The boss rush, refights and the endless Pit start from the Modes page too, refights with a choice of boss, and every mode waits for the Start menu to close.

Battles

  • The battle recap (Enhancements, Short by default): after each battle won, a card in the game's own look with the damage dealt and taken, the best hit and the turns (Full adds Superguards, Stylish moves, FP, items and Star Points), the grade stamped on it. It never holds the game up; A or B puts it away.
  • Records: a new Journal book of lifetime stats, for this file and for every file on the device: time played, distance walked, jumps and hammer swings, coins, enemies defeated, battles won and lost, Superguards and more.
  • Battle grades (Enhancements): each battle won graded D to S, from Stylish moves, Superguards, damage taken and turns; an A or an S pays a few coins more.
  • The Paper Cut badge set (Enhancements): twelve new badges, each folded from two or three of the game's own (Glass Cannon, Paper Armor, Second Wind, Charmed Life...), sold by a Toad merchant by Rogueport's plaza.
  • Zess T.'s new dishes (Enhancements): sixteen, from pairs of ingredients that made a Mistake before, to be found by trying.
  • The badge maker (Enhancements): up to eight badges of your own, each up to four of the game's in one, its BP cost set fairly by formula, sold by the merchant and shared as codes.
  • Battle puzzles (Modes): fifty of the game's battles with a fixed set-up and a goal ("win in 1 turn", without items, without being hurt...), from Goombas to the Shadow Queen, and one picked by the date for everyone each day. Losing one isn't a Game Over.
  • The Enemy maker (Challenges): up to eight versions of t...

Paper Cut 0.3.0

Choose a tag to compare

@LLCOOLT LLCOOLT released this 05 Nov 01:10

Paper Cut 0.3.0 brings online co-op, rewind and replays, a second screen for dual-screen handhelds, the settings inside the game's own Start menu, and a long list of things to change and turn on: free camera, mirror mode, cosmetics, your own music, texture upscaling, accessibility options and more. It also fixes items in battle, which healed the wrong amounts. It plays the Japanese (G8MJ01), US (G8ME01) and European (G8MP01) versions of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, from the game's C decompilation, with no emulator.

Android (arm64) papercut-0.3.0-<us|jp|eu>-android-arm64.apk (debug-signed)

On a computer, one download plays every version. A phone app can only run its own code, so phones have one app per version.

What's new

Playing together

  • Online co-op: the launcher's new Online tab. One player hosts and gives the room's code, the other joins with it: no router to set up. The two games connect directly when they can and through Paper Cut's relay when they can't, encrypted end to end with a key only the code's second half makes, so the relay sees nothing of the game. Connecting by address is still there. Both need Paper Cut and their own disc of the same release, on any platform: a PC can play with a Mac, a phone or a Steam Deck. Only the controllers' input crosses the network; both games play the same frames and check every second that they still match. The guest plays on the host's save and settings for the session, keeping their own display, sound and controls, and their own saves untouched.
  • Invites and watching: an invite link (papercut://join/<code>), or a room code copied to the clipboard, joins with a click. Up to four more can join a room just to watch.
  • Staying connected: after a network blip the two games reconnect and carry on. If they ever fall out of step, both start again together from the host's last save (up to three times a session).
  • Co-op in the field: the second player's stick walks the partner anywhere; A hops, B talks or hits, X is the partner's ability, L or R switches partners. Mario calls the partner back with Y. In battle the second player has the partner's moves, action commands and guards, as before.
  • Joining is easy: with co-op on, A on another controller joins as player 2. "1P" and "2P" show over the characters, a notice says when player 2 joins or leaves, and the Players section (Controls) shows who is who and picks player 2's controller with a press (a keyboard and one controller are enough).

A second screen

  • On dual-screen handhelds like the AYN Thor (Android): the game's own Start menu, live on the lower screen while you play on the upper one, navigated by touch; using an item or switching partners from it works as in the menu. It appears only on devices with a second built-in screen.

Settings

  • In the Start menu: a Settings tab in the game's own windows and font, its settings in categories as other games group them (Gameplay, Enhancements, Display, Graphics, Interface, Audio, Controls, Multiplayer, Accessibility, Language, General), each a page of its own, and All settings for the rest. The settings page uses the same categories.
  • Menu speed (Interface): the Start menu's pages and tabs slide in half the time (Fast, the default) or at once (Instant).
  • Restart now beside the settings that apply from the next start: the game starts again and puts you back where you were.
  • In six languages: the settings, the launcher and the Start menu's tab in English, Deutsch, Français, Español, Italiano or Japanese (Language > Menu language).
  • Saves' tools while playing: restoring a backup or copying a save to another release without quitting.
  • Display mode: windowed, borderless or full screen (exclusive, at the screen's own resolution and refresh rate). F11 and Alt+Enter switch between the window and the full-screen kind you chose.
  • Settings presets (General): your setup as a code or a file to share, and someone else's put in place. A preset holds the settings that change the game (gameplay, challenges, accessibility, cosmetics, mirror mode...), not the device's own (window, graphics, keys, controllers).

Looks and sound

  • Widescreen fixes: the Start menu's backdrop, the page flip between rooms, and the title and file screens fill the width. Background pictures show more art instead of stretching. Bars go where a room's set or a battle's stage ends (Display > Bars where a scene ends).
  • Luigi's own face and name when playing as Luigi: his head on the HUD, in the pause menu, on the BP coin and at level-up, made from his head on your disc, and "Luigi" on the pause menu's first tab.
  • Texture upscaling: the game's textures 2× or 4× larger, through Paper Cut's own edge-following filter.
  • Free camera: the right stick turns the camera a little around Mario and moves it in or out.
  • Mirror mode: the world flipped left to right, the controls turned to match.
  • Photo mode: P, both sticks pressed in, or its row in the Start menu's Settings tab. The game holds where it is; the sticks turn the camera all the way round Mario, up and down, in and out; Y hides the HUD and A takes the picture.
  • The Wardrobe: a Start menu tab of its own where Mario, the partners and the HUD's bars are dressed while you watch them, in 13 colours or any from a picker, with Luigi, Wario, Waluigi and Fire Mario looks.
  • Music shuffle and your own music: each room's music another of the game's; or your own OGG, MP3, FLAC or WAV files, named after the track they replace.
  • HDR output on Windows and Mac displays that have it.
  • Surround (Audio > Speakers): 5.1 or 7.1 from the game's own surround mix (made for Dolby Pro Logic II), sent to the rear speakers instead of folded into the front two.
  • The game plays in stereo: until now Paper Cut played it in mono (a fresh GameCube's sound setting); its file-select choice is kept.
  • Volume: sliders with mute buttons, and F9, F10 and F3 for volume anywhere.

Controls

  • Controllers: the community mapping list (about 2,300 models), players 1 to 4, battery, a live test, dead zones, remapping for every player, and a set-up for controllers nothing knows. They're named as you know them ("DualSense", "Switch Pro Controller"), and so are their buttons.
  • Button prompts that match your Xbox, PlayStation, Switch or Steam Deck controller, or your keys.
  • Steam Deck: the first start sets itself up for the Deck's screen.
  • Controller haptics (on by default): a short pulse as an action command's or a guard's window opens; on a DualSense the triggers resist while a command holds R.
  • One-handed controls: left- or right-hand layouts for a player's controller, and holding a button instead of mashing it.
  • The controller's light (Controls): on a DualSense, DualShock 4 or another controller with a coloured light, each player's colour, Mario's HP (green to red, pulsing when he's nearly out) or a colour of your own.

Help and play

  • Rewind (Gameplay, off by default): hold Backspace, or a button you choose, and the game steps back through its last seconds (5 to 60).
  • Replays (Practice): a run's input recorded to a small file and played back exactly, checked as it goes.
  • Faster battles (1.5× or 2× while you're not acting; guards keep their time) and slower game speed (50% to 90%, or only in battle, for more time on the action commands).
  • Message log (L): the last 200 pages of the message windows to scroll back through.
  • Colour-blind filters (protanopia, deuteranopia, tritanopia, with a strength) and captions for sounds: a door, a switch, a hidden block, a guard, with an arrow when it's off screen.
  • Bigger text: message windows up to 150%.
  • Read text aloud (Accessibility): the system's voice reads the message windows page by page, and with "Messages and menus" the Start menu's help and the Settings tab as you move through them, in the game's language when the system has a voice for it.
  • "Where next?": Y on the Journal tab names where the story goes next, and nothing is shown until you ask.
  • Challenges: presets and four new rules (one-hit KO, no guarding, harder attack commands, no items in battle).
  • Boss refights: any boss you've beaten, fought again.
  • Built-in randomizer (US): a seed and what to shuffle, no server needed, with a spoiler log.
  • Autosave at room changes (off by default), and a one-time note in the first room on where the settings are.
  • Input display for streams and runs.

Elsewhere

  • Updates from the game (Windows, macOS, the Linux zip): a new release is offered at the start, downloaded from Paper Cut's GitHub releases, checked against its published checksum, and put in place at the next start.
  • Save transfer: saves sent between devices on your network by a QR code or an address, with a backup made first.
  • Language packs: your own menu language, or changes to the built-in ones, from a folder in the mods folder, with a template to start from.
  • Discord status (on by default): your profile shows the area you're in, the chapter you're on and Mario's level, and whether you're exploring, in battle, or playing co-op or online.
  • Linux: an AppImage and a Flatpak beside the zip.
  • Save sync through any folder on Windows and Linux (OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, Syncthing...), as iCloud does on Apple devices.
  • **Character expor...

Paper Cut 0.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 03 Nov 23:30

Paper Cut 0.2.0 is one app that plays the Japanese (G8MJ01), US (G8ME01) and, new in this release, European (G8MP01) versions of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Like 0.1.0, it's built from the game's C decompilation, with no emulator.

Downloads

Windows (x64) papercut-0.2.0-windows-x64.zip
macOS (Apple silicon) papercut-0.2.0-macos-arm64.zip
Linux (x86-64) papercut-0.2.0-linux-x64.zip (glibc 2.39 or newer: Ubuntu 24.04, Fedora 40, Debian 13 and later)

Android (arm64) papercut-0.2.0-<us|jp|eu>-android-arm64.apk (debug-signed; not yet tested on a device)

On a computer, one download plays every version. A phone app can only run its own code, so phones have one app per version.

What's new

  • The launcher: a library of your discs, each recognised by version, with Play, quick resume ("Continue" picks up where you left off, even after a crash or a closed app) and the settings, before the game starts. Mouse, keyboard, controller or touch.
  • The European version, in English, German, French, Spanish or Italian, at 50 or 60 Hz. Any version can also show the text of another disc you own.
  • Settings, redone: tabs, a search box, and a mark on every option that changes how the game plays or what it saves. Keyboard keys can be changed (WASD or the arrows move by default).
  • Play as Luigi: Luigi in Mario's place, with 156 animations of his own made for Paper Cut. Mario takes Luigi's place in the story's scenes, and the text, menus and credits swap the brothers' names.
  • Gameplay+ (all off by default): partner quick-swap, faster menus and text, skipped repeated scenes, Save Blocks without the question, storage at any Save Block, a bigger bag, badge loadouts, faster walking, coin and Star Point multipliers, retry on Game Over, fast travel, a collectibles journal, a jukebox, free Tattle, battle pop-ups, Pit and Glitz Pit tweaks, a remake-style balance, and New Game+.
  • Accessibility: a difficulty slider and action-command assist.
  • Practice: a speedrun timer with load removal and LiveSplit, frame advance, RNG control, stat, item and story-flag editors, a memory watch, ten labelled save-state slots, and 25 achievements.
  • Display: 4:3 to 32:9, HUD size, supersampling, anisotropic filtering, MSAA, sharp text, CRT, paper-grain and sharpen filters, variable refresh rate and a performance overlay.
  • Audio and input: music, effects and ambience volumes; the mouse in the game's menus, lists and battle commands.
  • Saves: automatic backups, conversion between versions, and iCloud on Apple devices.
  • Mods: a mod manager, hooks generated from the decompilation, a texture-pack workflow, audience effects from chat, a boss rush and an endless Glitz Pit.
  • Phones and tablets: the launcher by touch, landscape first, and a settings button on the touch controls.
  • Preparing graphics: on the first start, the graphics the game needs are built before it begins (any button skips it).

You need your own copy of the game: a disc image (.iso, .rvz, .gcm...). Add it in the launcher.

Known issues

  • In some scenes a character may not appear on the first visit (the guards in Rogueport's square, for one). Waiting lets the scene continue.
  • The European version's battles and story haven't been swept as thoroughly as the Japanese and US ones; every map boots on all three.
  • The Glitz Pit screen (tou_03) differs slightly at 120 Hz compared with 60.
  • Nothing is code-signed. Windows SmartScreen warns on first run (More info > Run anyway). On macOS, the first time it's blocked: try to open it, then System Settings > Privacy & Security > Open Anyway. The iOS app must be signed by a sideloading tool.
  • Linux has been tested headless only, and the Android APKs haven't been run on a device yet.

No game data is included. You need your own disc image of the matching version.

Intel Macs and arm64 Linux are built from source for now (see the README).

What's in it

  • The whole game: every map and battle of both versions boots and runs, the story plays through, and memory card saves work with Dolphin's .gci files.
  • 120 Hz and up: frames drawn between the game's own 60, with the game's logic untouched.
  • 16:9 widescreen, any window size, internal resolution up to 8×, anti-aliasing and display options.
  • Settings page (F1, Back/Select, or a three-finger tap): video, audio, controls (rumble, remapping, touch controls), gameplay (fast-forward, text and run speed, skip intro, an action-command cue), save warps.
  • Save states: four slots, F5 and F8.
  • Mods: a mods folder and a Mods tab. Mods can replace or add disc files, textures and text (Dolphin texture packs work as they are), change the game's item, attack and unit data by name, run scripts in the game's own script language (new maps too), and run code with hooks on 61 of the game's functions. Tools port GameCube code mods built on ttyd-tools to the PC from their source. Four example mods are in the zip; see docs/MODDING.md.
  • Archipelago (US): a TTYD multiworld seed applied without patching a disc image, and a built-in client for the server. Choose the .apttyd seed and the server on the settings page's Archipelago tab. Playing one also needs the randomizer's game-side mod (TTYD AP), which is GPL and not included: build it as a code mod from its source with the porting tools.
  • Phones and tablets (iOS, iPadOS and Android): on-screen controls, portrait or landscape, haptics.

You need your own copy of the game: a disc image of the matching version (.iso, .rvz, .gcm...). The game asks for it on first start.

Known limits:

  • Nothing is code-signed. Windows SmartScreen warns on first run (More info > Run anyway). On macOS, the first time it's blocked: try to open it, then System Settings > Privacy & Security > Open Anyway (before macOS 15: right-click the app > Open).
