Merge checkUpdate and checkFreeUpdate into single method

Replace checkUpdate($activationUuid, $currentVersion) and
checkFreeUpdate($currentVersion) with a unified
checkUpdate($currentVersion, $activationUuid = null). The activation_uuid
query parameter is only included when non-null, so callers omit it for
free products.
