[0.4.0] - 2026-08-21

Adds Quick Notes and rebuilds the sidebar. Also fixes several cases where deleted or moved content kept showing up in search, tags and the graph.

Added

  • Quick Notes: a place to park a one-line thought mid-session without deciding where it belongs. Quick Notes are rows in the ledger database, not markdown files. They have no path, no title and no entry in the Files tree, and they produce no backlinks, no graph edges and no search results. This is deliberate and has no exceptions; the reasoning is in docs/adr/0018-quick-notes-are-rows-not-notes.md.
  • Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+N opens a Quick Note capture box from anywhere in the app. Type a line, press Enter, and it is saved. The dialog lists nothing and closes itself.
  • A Quick Notes pane listing everything captured, grouped by the day it was captured, newest day first.
  • Editing a Quick Note in place by clicking it. Fixing a typo does not change the day it was captured.
  • Deleting a Quick Note, with an undo toast.
  • Filtering the Quick Notes list by typing. This is a text match over the rows already loaded, not a search index query.
  • A Quick Notes count badge in the sidebar, hidden at zero rather than showing a 0.
  • [[wikilinks]] in a Quick Note are drawn and clickable. Filing a Quick Note into a real note is not in this release.
  • Ctrl/Cmd+N creates a new note from anywhere.
  • Ctrl/Cmd+\ toggles the sidebar.
  • Graph and Settings now have rows in the expanded sidebar. They were previously reachable only from the icon strip, so opening the sidebar made them disappear.
  • New ledgers created from the sample world include one Quick Note.

Changed

  • The sidebar collapses into the 48px icon strip rather than sliding out beside it. The strip is at the same width and in the same place as before.
  • Collapsed, the strip carries Search, Files, Scenes, Graph and Settings. The Files and Scenes icons expand the sidebar and scroll to their section.
  • Whether the sidebar is collapsed now survives a restart.
  • Expanding the sidebar restores the width you dragged it to. Dragging narrower than 192px clamps to 192px instead of collapsing.
  • Quick Notes appears in the expanded sidebar only. A count legible at 48px would be too small to read two digits in, and Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+N works regardless.
  • The Grimoire wordmark is no longer a collapse button. Use the toggle in the tab bar or Ctrl/Cmd+\.
  • Below 1024px there is still no icon strip. The sidebar is an overlay sheet opened from the tab bar, unchanged.
  • The seven block types are now named identically in the slash menu, the gutter handle's "Turn into" list and in prose. They had drifted apart.
  • Wikilink autocomplete went from three implementations to two, which now share their key handling, query behaviour and positioning. The [[ dropdown behaves the same in prose and in linked text fields.
  • Timeline blocks use linked text fields, so wikilinks in a timeline work like wikilinks anywhere else.
  • Pin, annotation and scene thumbnail colour pickers draw from one set of colours.

Removed

  • The always-visible icon rail. It is now the collapsed sidebar.
  • .grimoire/search.stale, a marker file maintained by five functions and read by none. Opening a ledger rebuilds the search index from a directory walk regardless, which is what picks up edits made while Grimoire was closed.

Fixed

  • Deleting a folder left its notes in the search index and their tags in the tag facets until the ledger was reopened. A folder of 30 notes kept answering searches after deletion. Maps had the same problem.
  • Moving a folder did not re-key its notes' index entries.
  • Deleting a map left its search index entry behind.
  • The Quick Note capture box cleared before the save was confirmed, and the pane swallowed the error, so a failed save lost the line with only a generic toast to show for it. The text now comes back unless you have started typing the next one.
  • Leaving the Quick Note capture box left the [[ dropdown open and floating.
  • On a narrow window in split view, opening one pane's detail sheet closed the other pane's, and the next press of that pane's toggle did nothing because it thought its sheet was still open.
  • Editing a map pin and closing the pane discarded the edit.
  • Map selections could carry across ledgers, because map IDs restart per database.
  • A slow copy could unlatch a drag that was still in progress, causing the drop to be re-parsed from the clipboard and duplicated.
  • Dropping a block into the other pane, the sidebar or another application pulled focus back to the original editor and collapsed the selection.
  • Holding a drag handle through an edit lost track of the block.
  • A note's frontmatter could be dropped by an autosave that only changed the body.
  • Repairs that cost a map pin now say so instead of doing it quietly.
  • The website advertised the previous release's installers, because the build raced GitHub's release API, which caches /releases/latest.

Known issues

  • On tablet portrait, New Folder, New Map and New Scene are only reachable by opening the sidebar sheet, and there is no keyboard for Ctrl/Cmd+N.
