New

  • Muted words. Under Settings → Feeds → Muted words, list words or phrases you don't want to read about,
everywhere or only in one folder or feed. New articles with one in the title (or in the text too, if you choose)
arrive already read, on every device and in every app. When you mute a word you can also mark the unread articles
it matches as read, with Undo.
  • Open a feed's articles on the website. For sites whose feed is only a teaser: in a feed's ⋯ menu, Open
    articles as…
chooses what the feed sends, the full article, or the website. With the website, its articles open
in a new tab and are marked read. The choice is kept per feed, so the iPhone app does the same.
  • Invite someone. Settings → Admin → Accounts → Invite someone makes a one-use link to send. Whoever opens it
makes their own account with their own password, so you don't have to choose one for them. A link works for
whoever has it, so send it only to them; it can name the email address the account gets, and lasts a day, a week
or 30 days. Pending invites can be canceled. Invited accounts are ordinary ones, never admins, and your allowed
email addresses or domains still apply.
  • Cards. A new article layout in View options: a big picture above each title, side by side on a wide screen.
  • Follow a subreddit by name. Type r/ and its name (or paste its address) where you follow a feed. No Reddit
    account needed.
  • Search Discover. The starter packs have a search box: type a name or a topic, or an address or r/subreddit
to follow it straight from there.

Fixes

  • Browser extension 1.0.4, which updates itself from the Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-ons: easier-to-read
colors, like the web app's in 0.12.0. The green Save button and the notes after a right-click save now meet the
    usual contrast guideline.
  • Copy buttons work on a plain http address, such as your server's address on your home network. Browsers
only offer copying to secure pages, so tokens and links had to be selected by hand.

Before you update

  • Take a backup: this update changes the database.

@jjbobzin jjbobzin released this 28 Oct 03:37

New

  • Lock your email-to-stash address. The Cloudflare email worker takes an optional ADDRESS_SECRET: a code that
has to follow a + in the address, like stash+k7q2x9m4@yourdomain.com. Mail sent without it bounces, so knowing
your address isn't enough to post into your stash. Settings → Apps → Email with Cloudflare suggests a code.

Fixes

  • The email worker never drops mail silently. Anything unexpected now bounces back to you, and a message over
15 MB bounces before the worker spends its time on it. ALLOWED_SENDERS also takes a domain written without
    the @ (example.com).
  • Sign-in security update. The library behind Google and OpenID sign-in is updated and fixes several security
issues, one in how OpenID sign-in checks its login token.
  • Easier-to-read colors in every scheme. Links, gray text and red warnings now meet the usual contrast guideline
(4.5:1) on every background, in light and dark. Light schemes got a touch darker and a few dark ones a touch
lighter, each keeping its look. Red buttons in dark mode now have dark text, like the green ones.

After you update

  • If you use the Cloudflare email worker, redeploy it: it includes a security update for reading incoming mail.
Download the new script (Settings → Apps → Email with Cloudflare → Download the worker script), paste it over
the old one in the Cloudflare dashboard and deploy. To lock your address as well, add ADDRESS_SECRET and turn on
Subaddressing as that page describes; without it, the worker works as before.

@jjbobzin jjbobzin released this 27 Oct 22:25

New

  • Add straight into a stash folder. A stash folder's ⋯ menu has Add to this folder, which opens the Save form
with that folder already chosen, so a link, note or screenshot lands right where you want it.

Fixes

  • A feed followed twice no longer brings every story twice. Before 0.9.0 the same feed could be added again on
https next to its old http address, and since 0.9.0 both copies fill up. The older copy (http, or an old address
that now leads to one you follow) stops updating and says so in Organize: unfollow it. Changing a feed's address
also treats http and https as the same feed.
  • Sites that only let web browsers in say so. When a site's bot check refuses FeedStash (netcup's, Cloudflare's
challenge and others), the feed's error says that's why, instead of a bare "HTTP 403".

New

  • Discover feeds. + Add → Discover feeds offers starter packs (Apple, tech, self-hosting, cooking, science, world
news and curious reads), each feed with a line about it and how often it posts. Follow one, or a whole pack into
    its own folder.
  • Feed info. A feed's menu has Feed info: how often it posts, how much of it you read, starred or saved, when it
last brought something new and its addresses, to help you decide which feeds to keep.
  • Videos and photo galleries in articles. A YouTube video in a feed now shows as its picture with a link to watch
it (Vimeo as a link), where it used to vanish, and several photos in a row become a strip you swipe through. This
applies to articles that arrive after you update.
  • Browser extension 1.0.3, which updates itself from the Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-ons:
    • Right-click saves say whether they worked. A short note on the page says it was saved, or why it wasn't,
and if the extension isn't set up yet, right-clicking opens its Settings to finish that first.
    • Save to FeedStash… in the right-click menu opens the extension's form already filled in with the link, the
text you selected or the page, so you can add tags, a folder or a note before saving.

New

  • Get the browser extension from the store. FeedStash Capture is now on the Chrome Web Store (for Chrome, Edge
and Brave) and on Firefox Add-ons. Settings → Apps has a button for each. It installs in one click, keeps its
    settings, and updates itself.
  • The extension asks for less. It no longer asks for access to every website, only for your FeedStash server,
when you set it up. It reads the page you're saving only when you click its button or menu.
  • Save into a folder from the extension. Pick a folder when you save, and it remembers the last one. The
extension also follows your system's light or dark look in FeedStash's colors, and snippets are called Notes there
too, as in the web app.
  • Delete a tag. In Settings → Stash → Tags, check one or more tags and choose Delete to take them off every
item. A smart list that only showed that tag, or a rule that only added it, goes too.
  • Rename a token. Each token under Settings → Apps → Connected apps has a Rename button, so "Phone or iPad" can
become "the kitchen iPad" and you know which one to revoke. The app using it stays connected.
  • Buy me a coffee. Settings → Admin → About has a link, if FeedStash is useful to you.

Before you update

  • As always, it's a good idea to back up before updating. This release doesn't change the database.

After you update

  • If you loaded the browser extension yourself, switch to the store version from Settings → Apps. Remove the old one
and add it from the store. Then open its Settings, enter your server address and token, click Save, and choose
Allow when the browser asks to let it reach your server.

@jjbobzin jjbobzin released this 21 Oct 20:46

New

  • Set up Google or single sign-on in Settings. Admins can now add Google, or any sign-in that speaks OpenID
Connect (Pocket ID, Authentik, Authelia, Keycloak and more), under Settings → Admin → Sign-in, no server settings or
restart needed. The form shows the address to give your provider and checks it when you save. You can add more
than one, turn one off or remove it. Each one either leaves who gets in to your provider (like a user group in
Pocket ID), or only lets in the addresses and domains on FeedStash's allowed list; Google always uses the list,
since anyone can have a Google account. Providers already set in the server's settings keep working and show up
    in the list.
  • Try it before anyone sees it. Each sign-in has a Try it button that runs a real sign-in in a new tab and
tells you whether it worked and whether that person would be let in, without signing you out. It works while
    the button is still hidden.
  • Your own sign-in buttons. Give each one an icon, built in or your provider's own logo, and a color, with a
preview while you choose. One switch hides every sign-in button at once, handy while testing.
  • A tidier Settings: settings is now split into the following groups: You, Feeds, Stash, Apps, and Admin, with
each section in its own box. They appear as a menu on the left, or tabs on a phone. Organize feeds has a way back
    to Settings.
  • Set up the browser extension and the email worker without GitHub. Settings → Apps has both as downloads, with
step-by-step instructions, and Email to your stash explains both ways to send email in.
  • See which feeds went quiet. Organize feeds now shows when each feed last brought in something new, and
calls out feeds with nothing new for a month, so one that stopped publishing or moved doesn't go unnoticed.

Fixes

  • Feeds with an old http:// address that a site refuses, like PhoneArena's, now load. FeedStash tries the
https:// address instead and updates the feed to it once it works. Importing an OPML or Feedly export that
still lists the http:// address doesn't add the feed a second time.

Before you update

  • As always, it's recommended to create a backup before updating. This release adds to the database, and once
it has run, older versions of FeedStash won't start on that database, so a backup is how you'd go back.

0.8.1

@jjbobzin jjbobzin released this 19 Oct 18:20

Fixes

  • Feeds that some sites turned away with HTTP 403 load again. FeedStash now introduces itself to sites as a feed
reader, not as a browser, which bot protection like Cloudflare's lets through.
  • Fewer "too many requests" (HTTP 429) errors. Feeds from the same site are now fetched one after another, not
all at once, and when a site asks FeedStash to slow down, it leaves that site alone for a while.

@jjbobzin jjbobzin released this 16 Oct 23:59

New

  • Logs you control. FeedStash now keeps its own log files in its data folder and starts a new one when a file
gets too big. Admins pick how detailed the log is, which requests get a line, how big a file gets and how many
to keep under Settings → Logs, and can read the latest lines or download the whole log there.
  • Quieter logs. Out of the box only saves, edits, failures and feed refreshes are logged, and the container's own
log only gets warnings and errors, so it stays small without any Docker settings.

Fixes

  • The unread list opens faster when you have thousands of unread articles.
  • Importing a big bookmarks file no longer holds up feed refreshes and saves while it runs.

Settings

  • New: LOG_REQUESTS, changes by default: which requests are logged until an admin changes it in Settings →
Logs. errors logs only failures, all logs every request like before, none logs no requests.

Before you update

  • As always, it's recommended to create a backup before updating. This release adds to the database.

0.7.0

Choose a tag to compare

@jjbobzin jjbobzin released this 15 Oct 22:14

New

  • Grid view for the stash. Show any folder, smart list or tag as a list, a Pinterest-style grid or tiles, with the
switch at the top right. Cards show the picture or the link's preview, the title, tags and the start of your
notes. Each view remembers its own choice.
  • Several pictures per item. Save a few screenshots together, and add or remove pictures when you edit an item.
The first one shows on the card.
  • Changed from Links, Notes, Screenshot to just one save form. The three were pretty much crossing over in usage.
Now you can add a title, notes, links, pictures and tags in one place, and FeedStash works out what it is: just
a link is a Link, just pictures a Screenshot, anything else a Note.
  • Snippets are now called Notes. Nothing changes in what they do.
  • No more Inbox since it was just a repeat of "Everything saved". The stash now opens on Everything saved. When
you're done with something, archive it or delete it.
  • Use only the feeds or only the stash. Settings → Your account → Use hides the half you don't need. Nothing is
deleted, so you can switch back any time.
  • Add an "About FeedStash" section in Settings, only shows for admins: including the version, whether an update
is out, and where to suggest a feature, report a problem or get help.

Before you update

  • As always, it's recommended to create a backup before updating. This release adds to the database.

0.6.2

Choose a tag to compare

@jjbobzin jjbobzin released this 14 Oct 17:04

New

  • Manage your tags in one place. Settings → Tags lists every tag in use. You can now merge tags into one or
rename them. If you have #code, #codes and #coding, you can merge them into a single tag.
  • Update notices for admins. After an update you'll see what's new, and the version at the bottom of the
sidebar tells you when a newer release is out.

Settings

  • SETUP_TOKEN is now asked for on every network once you set it, your own included. You only need it until your
account exists, so you can remove it afterwards.
  • New: UPDATE_CHECK, on by default. Once a day, while an admin is using FeedStash, it asks GitHub whether there's
a newer release. Set it to false to turn that off.

Before you update

  • As always, it's recommended to create a backup before updating. This release adds to the database.

After you update

  • If you use the Cloudflare email worker, deploy it again from clients/email-worker. It now turns away sender
    addresses without an @.
