NoteLite 5.13.0
NoteLite 5.13.0 adds guided practice alongside the original desktop recognition and score editor, improves MIDI export, and introduces native Apple client previews.
What's new
- Keep the full desktop editor. Recognize PDFs and images, correct the score, and export MusicXML or MIDI. Practice opens separately from Book → Instrument practice studio... in your local browser.
- Practice from MusicXML / MXL. Choose parts, measures, and tempo; use wait-for-the-correct-notes or tempo mode; see wrong and missing notes, review a session, and retry a passage. Instrument suggestions use score metadata, with manual selection when needed.
- Microphone and MIDI input. Microphone practice detects one pitched voice at a time. MIDI supports single notes and chords. Rendering and pitch detection run locally. A computer-keyboard demo is also included.
- Native Apple previews. New iPhone, iPad, and Mac interfaces provide a score library, source previews, recognition jobs, practice, and local session history. Import existing MusicXML directly; PDF and image recognition requires your own recognition bridge. Full manual score correction remains in the Java desktop editor.
- Better macOS desktop integration. Apple Silicon and Intel packages bundle Java, with macOS menus, Command shortcuts, and Finder document handling.
- External score workflows. Import MusicXML / MXL from another recognition or notation application, or launch an independently installed PianoBooster with a MIDI file.
MIDI export fixes
Corrects timing when divisions change, tuplet durations, independent voice ties, instrument transposition, repeat expansion and numbered endings, tempo changes, and shared measure boundaries across parts. Malformed recognized bar durations no longer shift every following measure. Adds key/time signature output and regression coverage for these cases.
MIDI export fixtures, image/PDF benchmarks, and recorded instrument tests document their inputs, outputs, and reproduction steps. They measure different stages and do not establish a general recognition or live-performance accuracy rate.

For desktop ZIPs, extract and run bin/NoteLite.bat on Windows or bin/NoteLite on Linux. Use bin/PracticeStudio.bat / bin/PracticeStudio to open practice directly. Configure OCR language data in the app's language settings if needed.
The macOS downloads are not Developer ID-signed or notarized. Native Apple clients are development previews, not App Store releases. Physical iPhone / iPad installation requires a separate device build and your own signing setup; see the Apple client guide.
Build verification
Windows and Linux distributions passed MIDI/practice regression tests and real-score recognition checks. Both Mac DMGs passed recognition and practice-server checks using their bundled runtime. Native Mac, iPhone, and iPad interface tests passed.
Binaries were built from d88c753. The release tag also includes the subsequent designer-credit document; application code is identical.
Known limitations
- Review recognized scores before practicing: the imported score is the reference for feedback.
- Microphone input does not assess chords, strumming, or ensembles. Continuous real-instrument performance and native hardware input still need further validation; recorded sample tests do not replace that work.
- Practice does not assess tone, pedal use, dynamics, fingering, articulation, or note-release duration.
- Practice follows measures in written order. MIDI export expands supported barline repeats and numbered endings, but does not interpret D.C./D.S./coda jumps, ornaments, drum mapping, or expressive dynamics.
- Native Apple clients do not include on-device OMR, the full desktop correction editor, or cross-device synchronization.
