PSPotify ME v0.3.2-alpha

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@Luxotick Luxotick released this 26 Oct 14:33

A fix-up release. On v0.3.1 you can install it from the PSP: the app asks at start, or use Settings → About.

Fixed

  • Refused tracks. Since October 2026 Spotify refuses the audio key (error 0x0001) to some accounts in every third-party player that works like this one (librespot #1649). Asking again right away, as the app did, makes the refusals worse. Now it waits 3, 5, then 10 seconds before the next request, no longer reconnects to Spotify after a refusal, and after three refusals in a row it stops and says "Spotify refuses keys to this account". This helps older accounts that hit a burst of refusals. Accounts Spotify refuses outright, which are mostly newer ones, still can't play, and there is no known fix for them.
  • Long sessions. Sign-in tokens now renew in the background every 50 minutes, so browsing and search keep working after an hour even when no new song starts.
  • End of a list. When the list you're playing runs out, the app says "End of the list" instead of silently stopping, and pressing next on the last song says the same.

Install

On v0.3.1: install from the PSP (it asks at start, or Settings → About).

On anything older: extract PSPotify-ME.zip to the root of the Memory Stick (ms0:/PSP/GAME/PSPOTIFY/EBOOT.PBP and the THEMES folder next to it). Updating keeps your pairing and settings.

Requirements: PSP-1000, 2000, 3000 or Go; 6.61 with ARK CFW (6.60 also works on the PSP-1000 and Go); a saved Wi-Fi profile; Spotify Premium.

The customization update: make the interface yours, make themes in your browser, and update right from the PSP. This release includes everything from v0.3.0.

Theme editor

https://luxotick.github.io/PSPotify-ME/ runs the PSP interface in the browser. Pick colors and a wallpaper, watch the screen change, and download the theme ready for PSP/GAME/PSPOTIFY/THEMES/. The gallery shows every shared theme; share yours with a pull request (see the README).

Updates and themes from the PSP

  • Updates: the app checks for a new version at start and asks whether to install it. It downloads the new EBOOT, checks its SHA-256 and swaps it in, keeping the old one as EBOOT.OLD; the new version runs the next time you start the app. Settings → About shows the version, checks by hand, and turns the check at start off.
  • Theme gallery: Settings → Theme gallery lists the themes on the theme site and installs one with ✕.

New in Settings

Settings is now grouped. Open a group with ✕, then change a value with ✕ or ←/→; ○ goes back.

  • Appearance: background (plain, the blurred album cover, or the theme's wallpaper), cover shape (square, rounded, circle), text size, list style (comfortable, compact, text only), animation speed, 12/24-hour clock, button hints, and a visualizer on Now Playing.
  • Layout: start screen, Now Playing layout (classic, centered, text only), playlist order (Spotify's, by name, by size).
  • Categories: hide categories or reorder them (SELECT, then ↑/↓).
  • Sound: your own five-band equalizer next to the presets, and the same loudness for every song (Spotify's normalization values).
  • Playback: sleep timer that pauses or turns the PSP off, battery saver (fewer frames while you don't touch the buttons), CPU speed.
  • Controls: ○ as the confirm button, L/R that only seek or only skip, volume step, and the headphone remote's play/pause and next/previous.
  • Quit at the bottom (START still works).

Also new:

  • △ on a playlist pins it to the top.
  • A new theme, Pspunk Pink, and a new icon and background for the XMB.
  • Themes can set a wallpaper (JPEG or PNG) and the colors of the selection, the progress bars, the mini player and the icons.

Fixed

  • Freezes during sign-in or while loading. The PSP's own DNS lookup sometimes never returned. The app now asks the DNS servers itself and gives up after a few seconds instead of hanging.
  • Crash at start with some icons: an invalid floating-point operation in the font renderer turned the PSP off.

Notes

  • Updating from v0.3.0 or older: those versions have no updater, so install this one by hand. Every release after it installs from the PSP.
  • Tested on a PSP-3000. Theme wallpapers, the same-loudness option, ○ as confirm, hidden or reordered categories, pins, the battery saver and the headphone remote have not been tried on hardware yet. Reports are welcome.
  • Your settings.ini gets the new options on the first start; your theme and equalizer choice are kept.
  • No log is written unless you set debug = on in settings.ini.

Install

Extract PSPotify-ME.zip to the root of the Memory Stick (ms0:/PSP/GAME/PSPOTIFY/EBOOT.PBP and the THEMES folder next to it). Updating keeps your pairing and settings.

Requirements: PSP-1000, 2000, 3000 or Go; 6.61 with ARK CFW (6.60 also works on the PSP-1000 and Go); a saved Wi-Fi profile; Spotify Premium.

A small update to v0.2.0: the app no longer writes a log to the Memory Stick all the time.

Changed

  • Quiet by default. spotify.log is no longer written on every run, so normal use does not keep writing to the Memory Stick.
  • Debug mode for bug reports. If something goes wrong, open ms0:/PSP/GAME/PSPOTIFY/settings.ini in a text editor, change debug = off to debug = on and start the app again. It then writes spotify.log next to the EBOOT; attach that file to your report. The debug line is added to settings.ini the first time this version starts.

Everything else is the same as v0.2.0-alpha: see its notes for the new interface, search, queue, equalizer and themes. Showcase video: https://youtu.be/5UoCwZZf08E

@Luxotick Luxotick released this 14 Oct 15:16

The biggest update so far: a new interface and most of the features that were missing.

New

  • XMB-style interface, drawn by the PSP's graphics chip at 60 fps: categories across the top, smooth lists, album covers in every list and a large cover on Now Playing.
  • Search with the PSP's on-screen keyboard (songs), and Recently played (playlists, albums and artists you played lately).
  • Queue: △ on any song → Add to queue. The Queue category shows what plays next; SELECT picks a song up and ↑/↓ move it.
  • Liked Songs editing: △ → Save to / Remove from Liked Songs, saved to your Spotify account.
  • Seeking (hold L/R), shuffle (△ on Now Playing) and repeat (✕ on Now Playing).
  • Equalizer with seven presets (Settings). It runs on the Media Engine, so it costs the main CPU nothing.
  • Themes: pick one in Settings or write your own theme.ini in Notepad (see the README). Cover colors tints the theme with the album art.
  • Long tracks stream through a 3 MB buffer instead of having to fit in memory whole, so 10-minute songs play.
  • A failed track now says why (no Premium, not enough memory, no playable file) instead of just "ERROR".
  • Faster and smoother overall: lists load in the background, connections to Spotify are reused, and the log writes to the Memory Stick in batches.

Notes

  • Tested on a PSP-3000. The new interface uses a little more memory; it has not been tried on the 32 MB PSP-1000 yet. If you have one, a spotify.log would help a lot.
  • Spotify Connect (control the PSP from the Spotify apps) is not in this release. It is in progress on the wip/spotify-connect branch.
  • Search finds songs only for now.
  • The full list of known issues is in the README.

Thanks to everyone who tested on their consoles and sent logs.

All four main PSP models now work.

New

  • PSP-1000, PSP-2000 and PSP Go confirmed. Volunteers played full tracks with Media Engine decoding on all three, and the PSP-3000 was re-tested with this build.
  • Firmware 6.60 is now accepted on the PSP-1000 and the PSP Go. Other models still need 6.61.
  • Safer start-up: before touching the Media Engine, the app now also logs the Media Engine code at the places it patches. That makes it easier to check new models and firmware from a log.

Thanks to the volunteers who tested on hardware I don't have, and to @KenzoNight for the PSP-1000/2000 groundwork (#3).

Known issues

  • "ERROR" on every track usually means the account is not Spotify Premium. Look for AUDIOKEY: ... error code 0x0001 in spotify.log.
  • PSP Go: tested from a Memory Stick Micro; internal storage has not been tested yet.
  • The full list is in the README.

Install

Extract PSPotify-ME.zip to the root of the Memory Stick (ms0:/PSP/GAME/PSPOTIFY/EBOOT.PBP). Updating keeps your pairing.

Requirements: PSP-1000, 2000, 3000 or Go; 6.61 with ARK CFW (6.60 also works on the PSP-1000 and Go); a saved Wi-Fi profile; Spotify Premium.

PSP-2000 support pre-release.

New

  • PSP-2000 works. A volunteer confirmed full playback on a PSP-2000 (02g) with 6.61 and ARK.
  • PSP-1000 support is experimental. It has not been tested on hardware yet. If you have a PSP-1000, please try it and send your spotify.log.
  • Device check at start: the app logs the model, the firmware and the Media Engine image before it starts the Media Engine. Unknown models and firmware refuse to start the Media Engine instead of risking a crash.

Thanks to @KenzoNight for the PSP-1000/2000 work (#3), and to the volunteer who tested it on a PSP-2000.

Known issues

  • "ERROR" on every track usually means the account is not Spotify Premium. Look for AUDIOKEY: ... error code 0x0001 in spotify.log. A clearer message is on the TODO list.
  • PSP-3000 not re-tested: the PSP-1000/2000 changes have not been re-tested on a PSP-3000 yet. If v0.1.1 worked for you and this build doesn't, please open an issue and attach spotify.log.
  • The full list is in the README.

Install

Extract PSPotify-ME.zip to the root of the Memory Stick (ms0:/PSP/GAME/PSPOTIFY/EBOOT.PBP). Updating keeps your pairing.

Requirements: PSP-3000 or PSP-2000 (PSP-1000 experimental), 6.61 with ARK CFW, a saved Wi-Fi profile, Spotify Premium.

@Luxotick Luxotick released this 11 Oct 12:07

Bug-fix pre-release. If v0.1.0-alpha crashed or powered off right at start, try this one.

Fixes

  • Crash at start (#2): v0.1.0 reserved a fixed 24 MB of RAM, which only fit when ARK's extra-memory (highmem) option was on. The app now sizes its memory from what the console actually has and asks the firmware for extended RAM. It was tested with highmem off.
  • Freeze when switching tracks: a slow album-cover download could block both the UI and the next song. Covers now load on their own thread, and network requests no longer wait on each other.
  • Faster track changes: DNS lookups are cached, and the next track is still resolved in the background. A switch takes ~0.5 s when prefetched and ~1.6 s otherwise.
  • Sign-in: a revoked refresh token is dropped instead of failing on every start, and the app no longer asks to pair again when stored credentials still work.
  • Log: spotify.log now records the player threads too, which makes bug reports much more useful.

Install

Extract PSPotify-ME.zip to the root of the Memory Stick (ms0:/PSP/GAME/PSPOTIFY/EBOOT.PBP). Updating from v0.1.0 keeps your pairing.

Requirements: PSP-3000 family, 6.61 with ARK CFW, a saved Wi-Fi profile, Spotify Premium.

@Luxotick Luxotick released this 11 Oct 01:15

First public build of PSPotify ME, a native Spotify client that runs entirely on the PSP. Ogg Vorbis is decoded on the Media Engine.

This is a work in progress. Expect bugs. Spotify Premium is required.

Install

  1. Extract PSPotify-ME.zip to the root of the Memory Stick. You should get ms0:/PSP/GAME/PSPOTIFY/EBOOT.PBP.
  2. Start PSPotify ME and enter the code it shows at spotify.com/pair.

Requirements: PSP-3000 family, 6.61 with ARK CFW, a saved Wi-Fi profile.

What works

  • Pairing, Liked Songs, playlists and album covers
  • Full-track streaming with Media Engine decoding
  • Queue with auto-advance, pause, previous/next and volume

Known issues

  • The volume label in the top-right corner does not always display correctly.
  • Switching tracks can take a few seconds.
  • A large Liked Songs list loads slowly the first time.

If something breaks, please open an issue and attach spotify.log from the game folder.
