What's new

Sound mixing fixed (#11, #12)

  • 3D sounds were about 10 dB too loud next to speech, music and ambience. That's why the creaking lamp and the thunder outside the bar drowned Conker out, and why voices felt quiet against the environment. Every positioned sound in the game was affected: creatures, gunfire, explosions.
  • The cause: on the Xbox, a 3D sound is filtered (HRTF) before it reaches the speakers, and its four 3D channels share one sound between them. The port sent the full sound to all four, so you heard it four times over. It's now one sound's worth.
  • Checked against an Xbox One playing the same scene: the mix was 7 dB off before, and now it's within about 3–4 dB (most of what's left is recording differences). Reverb is unchanged, so caves and halls keep their echo.

Invert aim works in multiplayer (#13)

  • Controls → Invert aim now applies to multiplayer as well as single player. Before, multiplayer ignored it and used the game's own multiplayer setting, which inverted the camera by default.
  • Now pushing the stick up looks up in both modes, unless you tick Invert aim.
  • Vibration off now also turns rumble off in multiplayer.

Windows: full resolution on scaled 4K screens (#10)

  • On a 4K screen with Windows display scaling (150% or 200%), the picture could be made at 1920×1080 and stretched, which looked blurry and made screenshots and overlays 1080p. This happened when something blocked the game's DPI setting at start, an overlay like RTSS for example. The game now reads the window's size in real pixels either way.
  • If it still looks soft, the game's log (game/logs) now has a line like display: swap chain 3840x2160 (window …, resolution …). Please attach it to #10.

For bug reports

  • The log now also shows each player's invert setting, the picture size, and when cutscenes start and end.

Build kit

  • kit-1.5 (source: branch launcher at 4656800). All of the above needs the game built from it.

Updating from v1.3

Replace the AppImage (on Windows, extract the new zip over the old folder), start it, and say Yes when it offers to rebuild the game (a few minutes, offline; your settings and saves are kept). Without the rebuild these fixes don't apply.

What's new

Options and Start (#5)

  • Options says where the settings are: A on the pub's Options picture, Y on the pause screen and Options in a match's pause menu did nothing, because the settings live in the launcher, not in the game. They now show a short notice saying so (close it with OK, A, B, Enter or Esc).
  • Start on the main menu is the game's again: a controller's Start does what it did on the console instead of asking to quit. Back, Backspace and Esc still ask whether to quit.

Controllers

  • Windows, Xbox wireless pads in the launcher: the launcher now reads Xbox controllers the same way the game does (RawInput off). A wireless pad that worked in the game but didn't show up in the launcher should now. If yours still doesn't, please tell us in #5.
  • Better bug reports: the game's log now lists every controller it sees: its make and model, type, how it's connected, how it was opened (XInput, DirectInput or HIDAPI on Windows), its button mapping and which player it went to, plus disconnects and devices it couldn't map. Attach game/logs when you report a controller problem.
  • SDL (the library that reads controllers) updated to 3.4.18.

Europe disc

  • The Europe disc (and the Microsoft Store copy, which is the same game) was already accepted; now the launcher names it when you choose it, and the README lists it. It builds exactly the same game as the USA disc, so mods work the same and players with either disc can play online together.

Build kit

  • kit-1.4 (source: branch launcher at a5d3604). The Options notice, Start, controller logging and SDL update need the game built from it.

Updating from v1.2

Replace the AppImage (on Windows, extract the new zip over the old folder), start it, and say Yes when it offers to rebuild the game (a few minutes, offline; your settings and saves are kept).

What's new

Play in your language (#3)

  • Audio → Language: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian or Japanese. The game's menus, subtitles and on-screen text come from your disc in that language (the USA disc has all six); Japanese also gets its own fonts. The voices are English in every language, as on the original disc.
  • The in-game Options menu isn't the place for this: on the Xbox the language came from the console's own settings, which the launcher now sets for the game.

Vignette on or off (#2)

  • Graphics → Post-processing → Vignette: the game darkens the edges of the screen all the time. Turn it off for an even picture. The red flash when you're hurt stays either way. On by default, as the game has it.
  • The camera wobble from the same request isn't changed yet: we're still collecting details on where it shows.

Cutscene volume

  • Audio → Cutscene volume: cutscenes play quieter than the rest of the game. Raise them by up to +12 dB; the boost applies only while an in-engine cutscene plays and fades back for gameplay. +0 by default (unchanged).

Steam Deck: the launcher works in Game Mode

  • The launcher can be used with a controller: D-pad or left stick to move, ←/→ to change a setting, A to press or open, B to go back, LB / RB to switch tabs, Start to play. An orange outline shows where you are. In Game Mode, Steam hands the launcher a controller and no mouse, so before this, Play couldn't be selected.
  • Launcher → Launcher size: Automatic (125% in Game Mode, 100% elsewhere), 100%, 125% or 150%, for bigger text and buttons on small screens. The window also never opens larger than the screen, and the banner shrinks on short ones.
  • The controller is only read while the launcher's window is active, so it's the game's alone while you play.

Decensor mod: what it covers

  • The launcher now says so: the mod's subtitles are uncensored (English, French, Italian, Spanish), but its audio is a work in progress by its authors. So far only the Great Mighty Poo song and the Greg, Uga Buga, Spooky and Windy cutscenes are unbleeped; the rest of the speech is still bleeped in the mod itself. We checked: the mod's audio files are installed and played as they should be.

Fixes

  • Graphics fixes found while bringing the game up on a Mac (the validation layer there is strict): the overlay's texture descriptors, a shader feature that discard needs, and occlusion queries that could be reused while the GPU still had them in flight (a rare wrong "is it visible?" answer, on any GPU).

Build kit

  • kit-1.3 (source: branch launcher at e038167). The language, vignette and cutscene volume settings need the game built from it.

Updating from v1.1

Replace the AppImage (on Windows, extract the new zip over the old folder), start it, and say Yes when it offers to rebuild the game (a few minutes, offline; your settings and saves are kept). Without the rebuild the new settings show in the launcher but the game doesn't use them yet.

macOS?

Not in this release. An experimental Mac (Apple Silicon) build is in testing: the game now runs on an M1 with sound, picture and a controller. It will come as a separate test release once it's ready.

What's new

  • Graphics → Game logic at 30 (original timing): the game runs at the original 30 like the Xbox version, while 60 or 120 frames a second are still shown, drawn in between. This avoids the instant death on the barn roof in Barn Boys (#1), which happens only with 60 fps game logic. Off by default; with it on, the controls respond at 30.
  • Updating is easier: when a new version brings new game code, the launcher offers to rebuild the game on its next start (a few minutes, offline, settings and saves kept).
  • README: how to report bugs and where the logs are, how to update.
  • Build kit kit-1.2.

Updating from v1.0

Replace the AppImage (on Windows, extract the new zip over the old folder), start it, and say Yes when it offers to rebuild the game.

Conker: Recomped & Reloaded 1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@Mabec-games Mabec-games released this 31 Oct 18:26

Mabec Games presents the first release of Conker: Recomped & Reloaded (Conker: Live & Reloaded, Xbox, 2005) running natively on Linux and Windows, built from your own disc.

Downloads

Linux ConkerRecompedReloaded-x86_64.AppImage: any x86_64 distribution with glibc 2.34 or newer (Debian 12, Ubuntu 22.04, Fedora 35, Arch, Bazzite and newer)
Windows 10/11 ConkerRecompedReloaded-windows-x64.zip: extract it to a folder of your own and run ConkerLauncher.exe
SHA256SUMS: checksums of both

Both are built and smoke-tested by GitHub Actions: the launcher, its bundled compiler and its build kit are checked on Debian 12, Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04, Fedora 44, Arch and Windows. Windows is new: full installs have been played on Linux so far, and reports from Windows players are very welcome.

Highlights

  • One-time setup from your own disc image (USA). The launcher extracts it and compiles the game on your PC with the bundled compiler. It works offline, and nothing of the game is included in these downloads.
  • Widescreen at any aspect ratio, any resolution, up to 240 FPS, with MSAA, SMAA, ambient occlusion and render scaling up to 400%.
  • Enhancements: per-pixel lighting, fur shading, full-detail characters and grass at a distance, dynamic water, rope physics, and enhanced, skippable cutscenes.
  • Controllers and keyboard/mouse with rebinding, and split screen for up to 4 players.
  • Online play with 6-word room codes. The host's router opens the port automatically, and a fresh room key every time keeps old codes out. Tested with 2 players on two PCs over the internet. 3 or more players are untested so far.
  • No in-game menus: every setting is in the launcher, and Esc on the main menu asks "Quit the game?" Yes / No. The dead Xbox Live sign-in can no longer trap you.
  • Optional decensor mod, downloaded from its authors' latest release.
  • Everything stays in one folder next to the launcher. Nothing goes to hidden folders, %APPDATA% or the registry, and the logs never contain IP addresses.

Requirements

Your own Conker: Live & Reloaded disc image (original Xbox, USA release), a Vulkan 1.3 GPU, and about 8 GB free during setup. The README has install steps for both systems.

Credits

Built on Live & Recompiled by giacomozama with TGP482, and Xbox XBE Recomp by TGP482 with Joshhhuaaa. The decensor mod is by nastys, Vaani and Theconker64. The full list is in CREDITS.md. Game source: Mabec-games/live-and-recompiled @ launcher (GPL-3.0); build kit: kit-1.1.
