Audio Quality Enhancement
Section: Media & Audio · FFmpeg-Integration · Home · Local-Project-Persistence
Audio Quality Enhancement improves speech intelligibility and reduces noise in the dubbing pipeline. It runs locally (FFmpeg filters and ONNX models such as DeepFilterNet) and typically follows media ingest before ASR/VAD.
The enhancement system is divided between the Trackdub.Media layer for traditional processing and the Trackdub.Inference layer for AI-driven signal processing. This separation allows the application to choose between high-speed legacy filters and high-quality neural network models based on hardware capabilities and user preferences.
This diagram shows how audio enhancement fits into the broader Trackdub pipeline.

Traditional enhancement relies on the FfmpegSpeechAudioEnhancementService. This service utilizes FFmpeg's built-in audio filters to perform tasks such as normalization and noise reduction. It is often used to produce a NormalizedAudio artifact, which is the baseline requirement for many speech pipeline stages.
- Loudness Normalization: Ensures consistent audio levels across segments.
- Speech Isolation: Basic filtering to generate speech-forward artifacts.
- Ambiance Preservation: Separating noise/ambiance from speech while maintaining the original background soundscape.
For high-quality enhancement, Trackdub integrates AI models such as DeepFilterNet. The implementation is housed in DeepFilterNetSignalProcessor, which operates within the ONNX Runtime environment.
Neural enhancement involves complex signal processing, including Fourier transforms and windowing. The system utilizes modern .NET performance features like Span<T> and Memory<T> to handle audio buffers efficiently.

Audio enhancement is a performance-intensive task. The project enforces strict rules regarding hardware acceleration and model licensing.
-
Buffer Management: Uses
ArrayPool<byte>andSpan<double>to minimize allocations during analysis and processing. -
Concurrency: Implements throttling via
MaxDegreeOfParallelismto avoid overwhelming system resources during batch processing. -
Hardware Routing: Uses
IRuntimePlannerto select the best available execution provider (e.g., TensorRT, DirectML, or CPU).
Every enhancement model must have a manifest entry verifying its license. Trackdub defaults to a "Commercial-safe" mode where only verified models are allowed to run in production lanes. Models like Weya Hush are identified in the roadmap as potential future candidates for speech enhancement.
The following sequence diagram illustrates the interaction between the application layer and enhancement services during a project run.

Audio Quality Enhancement is a critical infrastructure component in Trackdub that balances traditional processing speed with AI-driven quality. By strictly governing model readiness and utilizing high-performance .NET patterns, the system provides a robust foundation for high-accuracy transcription and natural-sounding speech synthesis.
