Python.pythonPath for portable installs

Environment data

• VS Code version: 1.29 at portable mode
• Extension version (available under the Extensions sidebar): 2018.11.0
• OS and version: Window 10 1803
• Python version (& distribution if applicable, e.g. Anaconda): Winpython 3.5

Expected behavior

I want to input python.pythonPath as relative path for current disk as i keep both Python and VS Code installs portable on my USB flash so that i don't need to update when the disk letter has been changed

Actual behavior

python.pythonPath accepts only absolute path or reference which could not direct to current disk.

Relative paths do work for "python.pythonPath" as that's how we support virtual environments. Can you please share the value for "python.pythonPath" that you expect to work?

The structure of folders is fixed as follows:

DiskLetter:\Scripting\VS Code
--------------------------\WinPython\Python3.5

Please note that i focus on run debugger for one file (no root folder) debugger.
Current "python.pythonPath": "DiskLetter:/Scripting/WinPython/Python3.5/python.exe"
It's also facing setup for "python.linting.pylintPath":"F:/Scripting/Winpython/python-3.5.3.amd64/Scripts/pylint.exe"
The current python debugger at setting.json is:

I still need to know what path you're trying that doesn't work as e.g. "python.pythonPath": ".venv\\Scripts\\python.exe" does work and that's a relative path.

What I am trying is just have "python.pythonPath" use a relative path for root folder (disk letter). I am focusing on portable installations of both VS CODE and PYTHON in REMOVABLE DISK (FLASH USB), e.g., there is no python in windows "environment variables" as the Root Folder (DISK LETTER) would change when I plug my flash USB in a new computer so the ".venv" should be something python extension understand as DISKLETTER while I don't want assign . Env file for every script folder. I tried a PowerShell script to update "python.pythonPath" in data/user-data/settings.json but it's not safe and requires administrator privileges. Note: it also requires changing the "python.linting.pylintPath" as long as the portable install doesn't have fixed path.

You can simply use .. as necessary to get to the directory you need to so you don't go all the way up to the drive letter. If that doesn't work then please come back with the exact value for python.pythonPath that didn't work.
