Second Release
JSRF Launcher v1v: second release
The launcher sets up, builds, updates and starts the Jet Set Radio Future recompilation for you, on Windows, Linux and the Steam Deck. You need your own copy of the game (NTSC retail default.xbe).
Note
The game update that adds the modern camera (v265) changes the generated code, so after updating the project press Generate code once before Build (or use Play → Build, which does both).
New
- Camera settings in Settings → Input, for the game's new modern 3rd person camera:
- Modern 3rd person camera: on by default. Turn it off for the original camera.
- Camera invert Up <> Down and Camera invert Left <> Right
- Camera sensitivity: a slider from 0.3 to 2.0
Fixed
- The launcher no longer says the generated code is out of date after updates that don't change it. Most updates change the project file that the code generation reads, without changing the code that comes out. The launcher now checks the code against the project's expected files, and only asks to Generate code when they really differ.
What it does
- Update → Download: gets the project and the build tools (about 150 MB). No other installs needed.
- Build: checks your
default.xbe, generates the code and builds the game into your game folder. Each step skips what is already up to date. - Play: shows what is ready (✓ / ✗) and starts the game. Click a ✗ to go where it is fixed.
- Settings: edits
jsrf.iniin tabs (Gameplay, Video, Input, Audio, Debug, All settings). Your changes are kept through updates. - Update: gets the newest version of the project, and updates the launcher itself with Update launcher.
Controller and Steam Deck
- Works with a controller: the d-pad moves between buttons, A presses, B closes a list, LB / RB change tab, Start plays. The settings lists scroll as you go down.
- Works with the touchscreen.
- Closes when the game starts, so it can be added to Steam as the game's entry.
- Builds and runs natively on the Steam Deck, no Proton needed. Works in Game Mode.

Everything the launcher does is written to launcher_log.txt next to it. Include that file when reporting a problem.

Launcher v1o
JSRF Launcher v1o
Builds, updates and starts the Jet Set Radio Future recompilation, and edits its settings. Windows and Linux (Steam Deck included). Nothing has to be installed: it downloads its own tools.
Download
| Windows 10 / 11 | jsrf_launcher-windows.zip |
| Linux / Steam Deck | jsrf_launcher-linux.tar.gz |
Important
Before the first Update → Download, add BRANCH=test under [launcher] in launcher.ini (it's next to the launcher once you start it). The launcher needs the test branch until it reaches main.
How to use
- Put the launcher in an empty folder and start it. On the Deck, mark it executable first (Properties → Permissions → Is executable).
- It makes a
jsrffolder: put your game files there, or click Choose folder in Play. - Update → Download, then Play → Build. The first time takes a while: it downloads its tools (about 150 MB) and translates the game.
- PLAY. On the Deck, add
jsrf_launcherto Steam as a non-Steam game, without Proton.
What's new since v1l
Fixes
- No more regenerating code after every update. Generate code now only checks the files that actually go into the generated code. An update that doesn't touch those files no longer starts a new generation.
- Your generated code is kept when you replace the launcher. Generated code from an older launcher is checked file by file and kept if it matches, so there's nothing to redo.
- Correct status during Build. On the Play tab, "Generated code" turns green as soon as it's done, while the game is still building. Before, it said "not generated yet" until the whole build ended.
Notes
- You need your own copy of the game (NTSC retail release). Nothing from the game is included.
- If you used an earlier launcher, the first Generate code runs once, then it's skipped until something changes.
- Moving around the window with the controller isn't done yet. On the Deck, use the touchscreen or a trackpad.

What's new since v1
Play tab
- A ✓ or ✗ for each part: game files, project, tools, generated code, the game.
- The generated code and the game show up to date, out of date or being made (with a spinner).
- Click a ✗ to go where it's fixed.
- Choose folder opens a folder picker.
- A new install uses a
jsrffolder, made automatically. An existinggamefolder with your game in it keeps being used.
Settings in tabs
- Gameplay: skip intros.
- Video: resolution scale, widescreen, window mode, anisotropic filtering, anti-aliasing.
- Input: gamepads, rumble.
- Audio: volume.
- Debug: logging, performance logs.
- All settings for every line of
jsrf.ini.
Faster: only does what's needed
- Update only downloads, and only when there's a newer version. Your generated code is kept.
- Generate code and Build check first and skip what's already up to date.
- A spinner at the bottom shows what's running.
Logging
- Settings → Debug → Logging also puts the debug file (
jsrf_recomp.pdb) next to the game on Windows, so logs name the game's functions. Turning it off removes the file. - The launcher keeps its own log in
launcher_log.txt.
Zig only
- Visual Studio is no longer used or needed.
Hidden Debug tab
DEBUG_MENU=1inlauncher.inishows it:- Force Generate/Build;
- Download tools;
- checks for the generated code,
default.xbeand the game's cache; - helpers for a running game: Play stopping after 30 s, Sample a hang, Trace one frame;
- the full log.
Fixes
- Building failed when the folder name had spaces (for example
New folder (2)). - Quick clicks and touchscreen taps were sometimes missed.
Launcher v1e
JSRF Launcher v1e
Builds, updates and starts the Jet Set Radio Future recompilation, and edits its settings. Windows and Linux (Steam Deck included). Nothing has to be installed.

| Linux / Steam Deck | jsrf_launcher-linux.tar.gz |
What's new since v1
Faster: only does what's needed
- Update only downloads. It no longer generates code or builds. If you already have the newest version, it downloads nothing.
- Your generated code is kept when you update. It used to get lost, which forced a full regeneration every time.
- The Build tab has two buttons, Generate code and Build. Each one checks first and skips when nothing changed. Before, Build took several minutes even when nothing had changed; now it finishes in under a second.
- Play → Build still does both in one click.
- Even if nothing changed forces Generate code or Build to run anyway.
Choose the branch
BRANCH=testunder[launcher]inlauncher.inimakes Update download thetestbranch. Without it, Update usesmain.
Log file
- Everything the launcher does is saved to
launcher_log.txtnext to it, with the time each job started. The previous run's log is kept aslauncher_log.txt.old. - Open log file on the Build and Update tabs opens it.
Fixes
- Building failed when the launcher's folder had spaces in its name (for example
New folder (2)). Fixed.
Before you start
Important
Add BRANCH=test under [launcher] in launcher.ini, then press Update. The launcher needs the test branch until it reaches main.
The test branch also fixes two things in the game's Zig build for Windows:
- The game closed right after starting. Fixed.
- Loading screens were slower than with a Visual Studio build. Fixed.
How to use
- Put the launcher in an empty folder. On the Deck, mark it executable (Properties → Permissions → Is executable).
- Put your game files in a
gamefolder next to it, or dropdefault.xbeonto the window. - Update → Download, then Play → Build. The first time takes a while: it downloads its tools (about 150 MB) and translates the game.
- Play. On the Deck, add
jsrf_launcherto Steam as a non-Steam game, without Proton.
Notes
- You need your own copy of the game. Nothing from the game is included.
- If you already used v1: the first Generate code with v1e runs once, then it's skipped until something changes.
- Crash reports from a Zig build don't name the game function. Use Visual Studio for bug reports if you have it.
- Moving around the window with the controller isn't done yet. On the Deck, use the touchscreen or a trackpad.

What's in it

jsrf.iniand saves are kept. BRANCH=testinlauncher.inimakes Update download thetestbranch instead ofmain.
Important
For now, add BRANCH=test under [launcher] in launcher.ini before pressing Download. The launcher needs the test branch until it reaches main.
Notes
- You need your own copy of the game. Nothing from the game is included.
