VoxHack v0.12.0 (alpha)

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@MrEveryDay98 MrEveryDay98 released this 30 Oct 03:55
  • Your story is told as you begin. Start a new character and the legacy of the Amulet is narrated, a paragraph at a time, over your character and pet on their pedestal, with your own god and title ("It is written in the Book of Amaterasu Omikami..."), the title music playing. Then the screen goes white, then black, and you're on the first level. Press Enter to skip it.
  • Hi-fi voices. In the VoxHack Editor's Voice casting, a SAM voice's Sound can now be Hi-fi: SAM's own words and timing, voiced in full quality instead of 8-bit, with real intonation (phrases settling, rising before commas and at questions, falling at statements, stressed syllables peaking). Brightness, Breath, Pitch movement and Hiss sliders tune each voice.
  • Moods. Any line can be said Angry, Sad, Afraid, Calm or as a Whisper (Voice casting, per line).
  • The Samurai's Japanese (gods, titles, items, the quest) is pronounced as Japanese.
  • Character creation: no "Ask" choices (Random instead); the replace-your-saved-game question matches the new look.
  • Fixed: dying while helpless (smitten while praying) put the death scene in first person.

Download VoxHack-v0.12.0-alpha-windows.zip below, unzip it anywhere, and run Launchers/Play VoxHack.bat.

@MrEveryDay98 MrEveryDay98 released this 30 Oct 02:25
  • A new loading screen: just "LOADING..." in white retro italics on black, its letters hopping in a wave.
  • The title fades in from black. Moving the mouse while the game opens no longer turns the view behind the title, no weapon flashes up as it opens, and Esc no longer closes the title (no flicker).
  • Character creation: each choice is picked with < and > arrows (Role < Knight >). The pedestal is a 3 x 3 of the dungeon's wall blocks with its floor on top.
  • Menus click when you choose something. The mouse wheel no longer changes a dropdown you happen to be pointing at.
  • Fixed: switching your pet to none and back could turn it into a giant ant; the figures could face the wrong way for a moment as the screen opened; clicking New game before the title had finished fading in showed the title's buttons over the character screen.

Download VoxHack-v0.11.1-alpha-windows.zip below, unzip it anywhere, and run Launchers/Play VoxHack.bat.

Pre-release

@MrEveryDay98 MrEveryDay98 released this 30 Oct 01:13

Also on itch.io: https://mreveryday.itch.io/voxhack

What's new in v0.11.0

  • A new title screen and character creation. Both stand under the Astral Plane's sky, with title music. Making a character, you see them close up on a pedestal, with your pet beside them (the role's own, a kitten or a little dog, or none). They change as you choose: role and gender pick the picture, and Random goes round them all.
  • Demos. Options > Record demos records each game you play, from when it starts, into the game's demos folder. Drop a demo onto "Play Demo.bat" in that folder to watch it, or run it on its own for the newest. Space pauses, W and S speed it up and slow it down, Esc leaves. A demo shows everything you saw: the level, the monsters, the sounds and music, the HUD, messages, menus and your inventory. It's played back as it was recorded, with no game running. Demos are compressed (a few hundred KB to a few MB), and they play in any VoxHack that speaks the same network protocol.

New in v0.10.4

  • Fixed: the tunnels round the Oracle's Delphi had no ceiling. A special level filled in with rooms and corridors round its map (the Oracle's, Minetown) is no longer opened to the sky with it; levels set in rock, ice or the sea are as before.

New in v0.10.3

  • Fixed: taking the stairs to a level that was slow to load could leave you where you'd been on the level you left, not on the stairs NetHack put you on (and NetHack's hero then walked there too). You're now held on the stairs while the level loads.

See the changelog for v0.10.2 (ascending, the Planes...).

Your achievements are kept outside the game folder (in %APPDATA%\NetHackVoxel), so they carry over to new versions by themselves.

See CHANGELOG.md for everything since v0.1.0.

What's new in v0.10.4

  • Fixed: the tunnels round the Oracle's Delphi had no ceiling. A special level filled in with rooms and corridors round its map (the Oracle's, Minetown) is no longer opened to the sky with it; levels set in rock, ice or the sea are as before.

New in v0.10.3

  • Fixed: taking the stairs to a level that was slow to load could leave you where you'd been on the level you left, not on the stairs NetHack put you on (and NetHack's hero then walked there too). You're now held on the stairs while the level loads.

New in v0.10.2

  • Ascending is a moment. Offer the Amulet on your own god's high altar: time stops, the camera circles high above the altar, and a great beam of light comes down on you. The offering and the choir appear as subtitles, then your god speaks ("Mortal, thou hast done well!") in SAM's God voice. "You ascend to the status of Demigod..." stands large in the middle as you rise into the light and vanish in a flash. NetHack's last question fades in after.
  • The Planes, as in NetHack. The Plane of Air is nothing but sky, under your feet too: you float over it, walking is a quarter as fast, and without flying or levitation you struggle in the thin air (a clumsy float, the view rolling). Its clouds are big soft puffs where NetHack has them, on the map too, and its thunderstorms strike with drawn, branching lightning. The Plane of Water is open water over a floor of sky, with its air bubbles as real spheres that drift smoothly and carry you along. You stay in control; the 3D world says whether you're inside one, a glowing outline on the floor shows where they are (one outline where they meet), and outside them everything is underwater. Falling out, you glide back to safety.
  • Medusa's island stands in an endless ocean, and the Plane of Fire in a sea of lava. The rock round a special level's map is an invisible wall, not a cliff.
  • The Amulet of Yendor's warmth has a line of its own at the bottom, coloured by how near the portal is (warm, very warm, hot!), fading away after a few seconds.
  • Zaps and spells fly straight where you look, not to the middle of a square (a wand of digging still digs along NetHack's 8 directions).
  • Monsters move smoothly, steered rather than jumping from place to place, and a monster that teleports leaves a swirl where it was and where it lands (even one you only sense).
  • Rodney speaks in his own voice ("Destroy the thief, my pets!"). Voices overlap, cutting off only the same speaker, and are heard from where the speaker is. The Astral Plane's music plays in its temples too.
  • Doors: an open door can be closed by looking through its doorway; with something standing in the doorway, Close or Open is still offered and NetHack says who's in the way.
  • The action wheel is back as it was (no More...); F3 still finds any command.
  • Fixed: on a crowded level (more than 512 monsters: a long stay on the Astral Plane) some monsters couldn't be hit. An engulfer swallowing you no longer lands on a monster sharing your square. Closing Options or Achievements only goes back to the title screen if they were opened from it.
  • Wizard mode: /god toggles infinite health; noclipping, you see every monster in view of where you are.
  • For modders:
    • Prefab editor: a Box tool and a Pencil that draw with the mouse in the air too, and middle mouse picks the block to draw with. Cells are 40 layers tall (towers are kept), there are no generated ceilings in hand-built areas, and built walls are used whatever kind of wall NetHack makes there.
    • VoxHack Editor: floating particle blocks (one big sprite, tinted, glowing, floating and spinning) in the Blocks tab, and skies can have lightning across them (how often, thunder or not). Effect layers can fade in and be see-through, and the Effects preview works again.
    • New sound hooks: ascension_offered, sky_thunder, storm_lightning.

Your achievements are kept outside the game folder (in %APPDATA%\NetHackVoxel), so they carry over to new versions by themselves.

What's new in v0.10.1

  • Shadows are off by default (Options > Shadows turns them on).
  • The narrator doesn't read ordinary messages any more ("You hear faint splashing."): just the quests' narration and arriving on special levels.

New in v0.10.0

  • Getting an artifact is a moment. The first time an artifact comes into your hands, time stops, a beam of light comes down on you, the camera circles you in third person and you hold it up over your head, its name in gold at the top. Each artifact is an achievement of its own.
  • Dying is a moment too. The camera goes out behind you and circles your corpse, "You die..." stands in red in the middle of the screen, and "Do you want your possessions identified?" fades in after a few seconds. It keeps circling behind your gravestone.
  • ASCII mode (F4, or Options > Graphics): the world built of NetHack's own characters in the IBM EGA's font, at full brightness. Floors of ., corridors of #, doors +, walls of shaded blocks in their colour (solid in view, lighter when remembered); monsters, objects, your weapon and the big map all as characters. The Rogue level is always drawn this way, with Epyx Rogue's symbols and colours.
  • Every command on the wheel. Every wheel ends in More...: Items, Gear, Magic, Move, Here, Info and Game, each opening its commands (rest on one to open it, or let go on it and click). An arrow from the middle shows what you're pointing at.
  • F3 finds any command: type part of its name or what it does, Enter does it.
  • Lightning flashes white: lightning bolts, wands of lightning, Mjollnir's strikes and cameras.
  • Drop some of a stack, Apply to yourself (stethoscope, mirror, camera, horn), long worms hittable anywhere along their tails, sprites face the camera (right in third person too).
  • Sitting on a throne (or offering at an altar, drinking from a fountain...) works with things lying on it; containers' contents are sorted by kind; special levels open to the sky have no ceilings floating over their edges.
  • For modders: the VoxHack Editor has an Extract sounds tab (cut clips out of a long recording, with an optional fade at each end), and new hooks: artifact_obtained, artifact_fire/cold/lightning/missiles, lightning_flash, camera_flash.

Your achievements are kept outside the game folder (in %APPDATA%\NetHackVoxel), so they carry over to new versions by themselves.

What's new in v0.9.0

  • Levels fade in only once they're drawn. After stairs, a trap door or a level teleport the screen stays black until the level around you has arrived and been drawn, and it arrives much faster: usually a fraction of a second, with no holes when it fades in.
  • Zapped wands fire at once. A ray you zap flies straight away even if you stand still (it used to hang until you moved), with a flash where it leaves your hand.
  • Q uses your monster ability while you're polymorphed: breathe, spit, gaze, hide, spin a web, summon help... The left side of the screen says what it will do ("Q Breathe"). Without one, Q still invokes what you wield.
  • Melee works while polymorphed. Every claw and bite of your form now lands where it should; before, often only the first attack (or none) happened. The second hit of two-weapon fighting and martial arts no longer goes missing either.
  • The pause menu has the Achievements and NetHack Options buttons (moved from the inventory and the Options screen), and its buttons fit their labels.
  • The big map shows which way you face: an arrow beside you turns as you do. Options > Map icons > "Where they are" draws you and the monsters at your exact positions instead of on the grid.
  • The Astral Plane is just its rooms, without the rock around them.
  • Fixed: "Program in disorder!" after a vault guard led you out.
  • Achievements: the conducts are listed under Ascensions.

Your achievements are kept outside the game folder (in %APPDATA%\NetHackVoxel), so they carry over to new versions by themselves.

See CHANGELOG.md for everything since v0.1.0.

VoxHack v0.8.0 (alpha)

@MrEveryDay98 MrEveryDay98 released this 25 Oct 20:11

Also on itch.io: https://mreveryday.itch.io/voxhack

What's new in v0.8.0

  • Achievements. 126 of them, Steam style: kept for you, not the character, from game to game and from one VoxHack version to the next. Reach Minetown, kill Medusa, wish, be crowned, ascend as each role, race and alignment, ascend with a conduct kept... Each pops up at the lower right as you earn it; the Achievements button (title screen and inventory) lists them all, the ones you haven't earned hidden as "???". Nothing counts in debug or explore mode.
  • Status conditions are coloured by how bad they are, and the bad ones shake: deadly ones (Stone, Slime, Strangled, FoodPois, TermIll, Fainting...) red and shaking hard, dangerous ones (Stun, Held, Weak...) orange, the ones in your way (Blind, Conf, Hallu...) yellow. NetHack's other troubles now show too: Stone, Slime, Strangled, FoodPois, TermIll, InLava, Held, Trapped, Legs, Slippery, Deaf.
  • The Minetown watch has a voice of its own.
  • For modders: the VoxHack Editor has an "achievement_unlocked" sound hook and a "Minetown watch" speaker.

Your achievements are kept outside the game folder (in %APPDATA%\NetHackVoxel), so they carry over to new versions by themselves.
