CheMPAS-A v2026.08.01
MVP release — August 31, 2026
Highlights
- Initial MVP for online, mechanism-configurable chemistry in MPAS-Atmosphere
- MUSICA coupling: MICM gas-phase chemistry, TUV-x photolysis, and MIEM offline emissions
- Runtime discovery and registration of mechanism species, transported tracers, photolysis rates, and emissions diagnostics
- Dry-air mass mixing ratio for transport and restart; optional fraction, percent, ppmv, ppbv, and pptv output
- Configurable chemistry cadence, MICM substeps and tolerance, reference solves, and bounded solver-failure recovery
- MPAS-column and solar-geometry photolysis; static or exact-grid upper-column extensions; optional jNO2 fallback
- Exact-mesh surface and layered emissions; multiple inventories, signed exchange, and bounded diagnostics
- Parameterized lightning NOx with altitude/vertical-velocity or isotherm gating
- MPI-aware initialization, grid validation, mass bookkeeping, and restart-aware chemistry state
Packaging and examples
- Pinned MUSICA-Fortran 0.16.5 integration with build-time version, revision, and MIEM checks
- Linux/AMD64 container build-and-run workflow; Docker Desktop support through x86-64 emulation on Apple Silicon
- Three containerized demonstrations: Supercell ABBA, Supercell Lightning NOx + O3, and Global Chapman + NOx
- Automated input setup, eight-rank execution, prior-output archiving, and basic log/NetCDF verification
- Wiki build, configuration, example, and provenance guidance; contributor and attribution guide
MVP scope
- Research mechanisms and initial conditions; not a production air-quality forecast or validated global composition configuration
- One MPAS block per MPI task for chemistry; no multi-block chemistry support
