New features 🎉
Edit portal maps 🗺️
Portal owners can now add a 3D Map page and manage its layers directly in the portal editor. Add imagery layers, edit labels and descriptions, remove or reorder layers, and move them between existing categories. For example, a portal owner can add Alaska high resolution imagery from a WMTS tile URL alongside the portal's other layers. Changes are saved with the portal. See #1995 and #2315.
This is the first release of map editing in the portal editor. Planned updates include layer category editing, a live map preview, advanced JSON editing, and more.
See when map layers are loading ⏳
Map visitors can now see when visible layers are still loading or being drawn. A loading indicator beneath the scale bar identifies the loading layers and disappears when loading finishes. Indicators in the layer list also reflect rendering progress as visitors navigate the map. #2126
Create and find portals 🔎
Users who are signed in can create portals by default without a DataONE Plus subscription or a portal quota. Owners can choose a custom portal URL without a DataONE Plus subscription. A new keyword search on the portals page filters both My Portals and All Portals, making it easier to find a portal by topic or project name. See #2884 and #2853.
Misc improvements
- Download All remains available when dataset files are known to be missing, with a warning that those files will be omitted. #2852
- The portal editor has a more compact title and logo area, leaving more room for editing. #2950
- Dataset pages no longer label metadata as limited solely because it is displayed from the search index. #2937
Bug fixes 🛠️
- Saving metadata preserves existing taxonomic coverage, including classification branches that share ancestors. #2944
- Existing EML filenames are preserved when saving edits. A filename is generated from the dataset title only when none exists. #2945
- Opening Sharing options before a dataset's first submission preserves the repository's default permissions. #2946
- Empty location rows no longer prevent saving otherwise valid metadata. #2810
- Existing metadata with trailing spaces in email addresses or empty paragraphs can be saved without manually correcting those fields. See #2931 and #2930.
- Temporal coverage accepts valid times with time zone offsets and correctly compares date ranges and fractional seconds. See #2840 and #2955.
- Saved Resource Maps use DataONE resolve URLs for object references, including provenance saves and recovery from interrupted saves. #2947
- Portal maps using the default layout fill the available screen height and resize with the window. #2820
- The map legend shows Your Polygon only when a complete download polygon is present, and removes the entry when the polygon is cleared or the download panel closes. #2909
- Portal editor alerts stay below the navigation bar, and scrolling works more smoothly through long map layer lists. 343b0a2
- Dataset search result tooltips remain visible above the catalog panels. 5978f3c
- Dataset citations use the publication year when available instead of falling back to the upload year. f3856c1
- The dataset editor restores original files after failed replacements while preserving permission changes. dc0166d
Developer notes
- Administrators can still restrict who may create portals or set a numeric quota. The default
portalLimit: falseallows unlimited portals. - Downloading packages with missing files require Metacat 3.5.1 or later, which supports omitting missing objects from downloaded packages.
- Contributor guidelines now require new or updated interfaces to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA and include accessibility testing guidance. #2915
Dependency updates

- Additional lockfile updates moved brace-expansion 1.1.18 → 1.1.21 and 2.1.4 → 2.1.7.
