Socrates v0.1.0-beta.5
Free beta of Socrates, an app for talking with four artificial Greek philosophers: Socrates, Diogenes, Plato and Aristotle. You need your own Claude or OpenAI key. Everything is stored encrypted on your device; there is no Socrates server, no account and no analytics.
What changed since beta.4
- The About screen links to the new website (https://nireus79.github.io/Socrates-ai/), and the privacy policy is now a proper page on it.
- Fixed: a stray word "null" beside the count of questions thought through at the top of a chat.
- Fixed: an empty Stop button box showed beside the message box when nothing was being sent.
- Fixed: the Memory checkbox in Settings sat on its own line, away from its label.
Downloads
socrates-v0.1.0-beta.5-android.apksigned Android app (Android 7 or newer, arm64). Closing the app stops its engine.- Linux and Windows builds, unsigned. Check a download with the
.sha256file next to it.
Know before you install
- Windows: the first start shows a SmartScreen warning because the build is not signed ("More info", then "Run anyway"). It needs the WebView2 runtime (included in Windows 11). The Windows build has not been run by the author yet.
- Linux: needs GTK 3 and WebKitGTK 4.1 (
libgtk-3-0,libwebkit2gtk-4.1-0). - There is no macOS build.
- The philosophers are artificial characters made from what was written about them. They are not real people and not a source of medical, legal or other professional advice. The app is for people aged 16 and over. If you are thinking of hurting yourself, please call your local emergency number or a crisis line.
- How well they talk, and how reliably the safety checks work, depend on the model behind them. You pay your AI provider for what you use; set a spending limit.

Socrates v0.1.0-beta.4
Free beta of Socrates, an app for talking with four artificial Greek philosophers: Socrates, Diogenes, Plato and Aristotle. You need your own Claude or OpenAI key. Everything is stored encrypted on your device; there is no Socrates server, no account and no analytics.
What is in this beta
- Four philosophers, each with his own manner, who ask, answer and say when they do not know. English and Greek.
- Help me answer (starting points when you are stuck), Put a question to me, and a Progress screen: thinking questions through with a philosopher is how you come to meet the next ones (all four are open in this beta).
- Memory: each philosopher keeps short notes in your own words, for himself only; you can read and delete them.
- A safety check on every message and every reply, above every philosopher. Report a reply that is wrong or harmful.
- New in this version: a User manual and About screen (Settings, About and help), Report a problem on the phone, a log file on the computer (
~/.socrates/socrates.log, no message text), an interface aligned with the Moly app (icons, light and dark themes), Stop while a reply is awaited, a copy button on replies, and the new logo as the app icon.
