Release list
v1.4.1
What's Changed
- Fix stuck fullscreen hold and duplicate clipboard actions on shortcut keys by @NitroDiesel in #17
Full Changelog: v1.4.0...v1.4.1
v1.4.0
Protection
- Copy and paste protection now overrides only blocking. Pages run their own copy, cut, and paste handling again, so rich editors, chat apps, and custom copy formats work while protection is on. A page's attempt to cancel copying, cutting, or pasting is ignored unless the page is doing that clipboard work itself.
- Blockers written as inline attributes, such as
onpaste="return false", are now overridden too. - Pages' own right-click menus on text fields show alongside the browser's edit menu instead of being suppressed.
- Tab, focus, and visibility protection is unchanged.
Appearance
- Typeface has a new "Installed font…" choice that uses any font installed on Windows, macOS, or Linux. In Chromium browsers, "Find fonts" lists every installed font after you allow font access. Firefox can't list fonts, so Specter suggests common ones it finds on your device, and you can type any installed font's name.
- The chosen typeface now applies in Chromium browsers. It previously stayed on the browser's default font there.

v1.3.1
Fixes
- Pasting images and other files works again while protection is on. Since 1.3.0, sites that attach pasted files through their own paste handling, such as Messenger, received nothing. Text paste is unchanged.

v1.3.0
Specter 1.3.0
While protection is on, a page keeps the fullscreen state after you leave fullscreen, and it cannot block copy, cut, or paste. Pause in fullscreen still only covers visibility and focus. New installs leave that pause off.
Changes
- Fullscreen. After you leave fullscreen, the page still sees the fullscreen state. A page request to exit does not clear that report. Esc still leaves fullscreen in the browser.
- Copy and paste. Pages cannot cancel copying, cutting, or pasting, including the keyboard shortcuts and the menu on a text field.
- Pause in fullscreen. This still pauses only visibility and focus. New installs leave it off. A choice you already saved stays until you turn it off.
v1.2.1
Specter 1.2.1
Interface polish after a design review. Nothing moved and no features changed; the interface is clearer and calmer.
Changes
- Confirmation messages now say exactly what happened, such as "Exception added", "Site activity reset", or "Tab protection turned off". Error messages tell you how to fix the problem.
- The dashboard overview explains what websites currently see, and shows your local counts as a simple list.
- Fewer animations. Only the power button turning on, the live status dot, and work in progress animate on their own.
- Flat colors for the power button and the ghost icon.
- Event log entries show the site and its details on separate lines, and numbers in Site activity line up.
v1.2.0
Specter 1.2.0
A full interface redesign: uBlock Origin's layout with T3 Code's look and motion. Every feature from 1.1.x is still here.
Changes
- New popup. Shows the site's hostname, one big round power button for the current tab, counters for sites observed, events logged, and exceptions, Global/Site/Tab status tiles, the pause-site action, and a bottom tool row with Dashboard and Shortcuts.
- New dashboard. Settings is now a tabbed dashboard with a sticky toolbar: Overview, Protection, Exceptions, Event log, Site activity, Appearance, Diagnostics, Shortcuts, and About. Event log and Diagnostics appear in Advanced mode.
- T3 Code styling. Zinc neutrals, an indigo accent, true-black dark mode, your system font, pill switches, smooth entrances, sliding toasts, and a live status ping. Reduced-motion and high-contrast settings are respected.
- New ghost logo and toolbar icon.
- Your settings carry over. If you never changed the accent color or font, you get the new defaults. Custom choices are kept, and the Ubuntu fonts are still available under Appearance.
- Smaller download: the old display font and paper texture were removed.
v1.1.1
Specter 1.1.1
Reliability and security fixes from an external audit. No settings migration is needed, and the UI is unchanged apart from one setting description.
Changes
- Per-tab protection choices now survive the browser suspending Specter's background worker. They are kept for the browser session only, so a reused tab after a browser restart cannot inherit an old choice.
- Live setting changes reach every frame in a tab exactly once, including frames that loaded before a background restart. Previously each frame received each change three times, and frames could go stale after a restart.
- Websites can no longer fill Specter's storage with forged activity data. Oversized data is dropped, nothing is recorded while activity logging is off, and stored entries are size-limited.
- Site activity's Recorded events column now shows real counts instead of always 0.
- The popup's per-tab toggle targets the right tab when the popup is opened as a full tab.
npm run buildworks on systems that only providepython3.- Automatic reload on activation (off by default) now warns that it interrupts in-page downloads, uploads, and unsaved forms. If large downloads such as MEGA fail when you turn protection on, keep this option off.
v1.1.0
Specter 1.1.0
Changes
- Redesigned popup and settings with local typography, light/dark themes, and explicit Global, Site, and Tab states. No Material Design framework or remote runtime assets.
- Direct site pause/resume, clearer unsupported-page guidance, and retry states.
- Unsaved-edit protection with save/discard feedback, searchable activity records, and persistent settings section links.
- Shared contrast-tested accent colors, safer settings imports, corrected deferred settings writes, and a fullscreen-pause notice that follows the active policy.
- Repository-local agent context in
AGENTS.mdanddocs/AGENT_CONTEXT.md.
Install
- Chrome and Chromium: download
specter-chrome.zip, extract it, openchrome://extensions, enable Developer mode, and choose Load unpacked. Select the extracted folder containingmanifest.json. - Firefox and compatible Gecko derivatives, Gecko 152+: download
specter-firefox.zip, openabout:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox, choose Load Temporary Add-on, and select the ZIP. This archive is unsigned; temporary installation ends when the browser closes. Permanent installation requires a signed distribution where the browser enforces signing. - Existing unpacked installations: replace the files and reload Specter from the extension manager. Reload already-open websites once to install the new extension code. Subsequent protection toggles apply live where supported.
