Overview

Answers common questions about Factory's scope, comparisons, and reuse.

1. Is Factory a replacement for debootstrap or mmdebstrap?

Factory is an independent rootfs bootstrap implementation that uses Python-APT. It does not invoke debootstrap or mmdebstrap.

2. How is Factory different from the Open Build Service?

The Open Build Service (OBS) builds binary packages from source using build workers and can host repositories. Factory consumes binary packages from APT and assembles rootfs archives and ISO images on a local machine or CI runner. It does not provide a package build farm or repository hosting. See the OBS User Guide for its workflows.

3. How is Factory different from Launchpad or a PPA?

A Launchpad PPA accepts source packages, builds them for Ubuntu, and hosts the resulting binaries in an APT repository. Factory consumes already-built packages from compatible APT repositories; it does not operate a source build farm or PPA.

4. Can I use Factory for a distribution other than Nitrux?

The rootfs builder can use compatible Debian APT repositories and packages. ISO builds have distribution-specific asset requirements; see Limitations.

5. Can Factory builds run in a rootless container?

Not reliably. Effective UID 0 alone is insufficient; the container must also grant chroot, mount, and device capabilities. See Limitations and Troubleshooting.
