Agent Trail 0.1.0-alpha.12 — Claude Code in the terminal

Choose a tag to compare

@NotYaz NotYaz released this 03 Nov 19:02
180e9d8

Agent Trail now follows Claude Code sessions you start with claude in a terminal, next to Claude Desktop's.

  • Terminal sessions on the same card: a claude session counts under its profile, so with the default ~/.claude it joins Claude · Main, under the same avatar as that account's Desktop sessions.
    • Its edits count for the Git checkout they landed in, as Codex's do, wherever the shell has cd'd. A session started in ~/Dev that edits ~/Dev/app counts for app.
    • Subagent edits count as delegated.
  • Live status: terminal sessions get live status, including Working in background while a command they started is still running.
  • Jump: brings forward the terminal running claude: Terminal, iTerm2, Ghostty, Warp, VS Code or Cursor. The terminal is read from the process environment, and only after the process start is verified.
    • In Claude Desktop's own terminal pane, Jump brings forward the Claude instance holding that pane, even with two instances running. Grok in that pane gets the same.
    • A terminal session is never sent to a Desktop Code session.
  • What counts: only logs whose first record naming an entrypoint and folder says cli.
    • SDK runs and claude -p are not counted, and a Desktop session's log is never counted twice.
    • Claude Code deletes terminal logs after 30 days by default, and their history leaves Agent Trail with them.
  • Claude's shell status: Claude Code now reports a finished turn whose command still runs as shell. Agent Trail showed that as Unknown; it now shows Working in background.
  • Without Claude Desktop: a Mac with only the Claude Code CLI no longer gets Desktop notices.
  • For contributors: AgentTrailInspect --live marks terminal sessions startedInTerminal and names their host.

Validation: 315 tests pass on Apple Silicon and Intel CI. Checked against a live claude 2.1.317 session in Ghostty: the cli entrypoint, its shell status during a background job shown as Working in background, Ghostty named as the host, and its edit counted on the project. Full scans of this Mac's history match the previous build except for that one terminal session. An independent review found four defects; all were fixed before release.

The universal2 ZIP supports Apple Silicon and Intel Macs on macOS 14+. It is ad-hoc signed and not Apple-notarized, so Gatekeeper may block downloaded builds; building locally remains the supported alpha starting point. Assistant runtime formats are private and version-dependent.

Agent Trail 0.1.0-alpha.11 — Color themes and a working count

Choose a tag to compare

@NotYaz NotYaz released this 03 Nov 09:34
2b32684

Agent Trail gets color themes and a menu-bar icon that counts working sessions.

  • Color themes: pick Classic, Gentle, Vivid or Aurora under ⋯ › Theme.
    • Gentle brightens the canvas and the indigo wash, draws sparklines in indigo and gives the Trail calendar a blue-slate tint. It also brightens dark mode's Working green and needs-input amber.
    • Vivid adds brighter profile colors that keep their color families. Unlike Classic's, they pass color-vision checks for every pair, in light and dark.
    • Aurora adds an indigo Trail calendar and a three-color wash.
    • Classic stays the default.
  • A working count in the menu bar: while agents work and none needs input, a number inside the trail's triangle shows how many sessions are working. It includes Claude sessions working in the background, and + means ten or more. The amber needs-input count still takes over while a session waits. Show working count in ⋯ › Menu bar turns it off.
  • A larger menu-bar icon: every icon state is 1.5 times its old size, about 18 pt tall, so the count reads at a glance. The item is about 9 pt wider.
  • The website has a theme picker under the hero screenshot. It recolors the page and shows the panel in that theme.
  • For contributors: renders take --theme NAME, and --render-status-demo also draws the icons at real size.

Validation: 302 tests pass on Apple Silicon and Intel CI. Each theme was rendered and checked in light and dark, and the menu-bar icon was rendered at real size.

Agent Trail 0.1.0-alpha.9 — Background work counts

Choose a tag to compare

@NotYaz NotYaz released this 02 Nov 16:27
2ea2c19

Agent Trail no longer calls a Claude session idle while work it started is still running.

  • Background work counts: when a Claude turn ends while a Bash command it started is still running, such as a background build or a loop waiting on a long training job, the session stays Working until the command exits. Menus, Jump entries and the card tooltip say Working in background, and the tooltip names when the command started.
  • How it knows: Claude runs each Bash command in its own process group, while MCP servers stay in Claude's. Agent Trail lists the session process's children and counts only those that lead their own group and started before the turn ended. A process started after the turn ended, such as a hook, does not count.
  • Privacy: only each child's parent, process group and start time are read, through libproc. No arguments or environment are read, and no extra processes are started.
  • Diagnostics: AgentTrailInspect --live reports backgroundSince.

Limits: a background command that never exits keeps its session Working until it ends or the session closes. A job that fully detaches from the session, with no command still waiting on it, cannot be tied to a session. Codex and Grok status is unchanged.

Validation: 299 tests pass on Apple Silicon, including new tests against real spawned processes. On a machine with 16 live Claude sessions across two profiles, the session waiting on a long job reads Working, and the idle sessions whose only children are MCP servers stay Idle.

Agent Trail 0.1.0-alpha.10 — Smooth scrolling and a website

Choose a tag to compare

@NotYaz NotYaz released this 02 Nov 18:57
6b8978b

Agent Trail scrolls smoothly and has a website.

  • Smoother scrolling: the Projects list no longer stutters each time a card comes into view, and both tabs stop pausing every 3 seconds when live status refreshes. Cards measure their layout once instead of trying several, the ⋯ menu is built only when you click it, and a live check that changes nothing redraws nothing and no longer merges saved history again. Cards look and behave as before; the ⋯ menu now opens when the click is released, like the Jump control's menu.
  • A website: https://notyaz.github.io/agent-trail/ covers the panel, live status, Jump, Growth, privacy and installation. It gives a headline section to keeping long jobs visible.
  • Long jobs, explained: the README's new "Long-running jobs and background commands" section shows how a Claude session whose training run, long build or wait loop is still running stays Working in background. It covers how Agent Trail recognizes that command from the process tree, how to keep a long job attached to its session, and the limits.
  • For contributors: AgentTrail --benchmark-scroll projects|growth measures scrolling in a real popover with sample data or your own history.

Validation: 302 tests pass on Apple Silicon and Intel CI. Time Profiler traces of a release build were compared before and after, and the renders are unchanged apart from the ⋯ glyph's rasterization.

Agent Trail 0.1.0-alpha.8 — Jump to the work

Choose a tag to compare

@NotYaz NotYaz released this 01 Nov 18:58
5913fd7

Agent Trail now takes you straight back to the work, and its menu-bar icon shows what your agents are doing.

  • Jump to the work: each project card has one main button that opens the session that most needs you. It reads Answer for a session waiting on input, Open for a working one and Resume for an idle one, with the session title and how long it has been in that state. It replaces the one-button-per-Claude-instance row.
  • Exact sessions:
    • Claude Code sessions open in Claude Desktop, also with several Claude instances running. The session's own instance comes forward first and then receives the link, with a hint naming the session as a fallback.
    • Codex threads open in the Codex app.
    • Grok brings forward the terminal it runs in.
  • More ways to open: the ⌄ menu lists every live session. It also opens the worktree in your editor, terminal or Finder, copies the path, opens the recorded pull request and brings a profile forward. Details rows get their own ↗.
  • Menu-bar states:
    • Working: a dot travels along the trail.
    • Needs input: the icon turns amber with a count.
    • Finished: a checkmark appears briefly.
    • Right-click lists live sessions to jump to.
    • Settings for the animation, the count and session titles are in the ⋯ menu.
    • The animation runs in Core Animation and stops for Reduce Motion, Low Power Mode and sleeping displays.
  • Privacy: session titles and Claude's "needs you to…" sentence are read live and kept in memory only. They are never cached, exported or logged. Agent Trail opens links only to apps that are already running, never launches an assistant, and needs no Automation or Accessibility permission.
  • Donations: the support page now lists crypto addresses with QR codes, for Bitcoin, one address for Ethereum, Base and Arbitrum One, and USDT on TRON.

Validation: 297 tests pass on Apple Silicon and Intel CI. The menu-bar node detection was checked with --render-status-demo. A review across launcher safety, data and privacy, touch UI and the status item was run, and all confirmed issues are fixed.

The universal2 ZIP supports Apple Silicon and Intel Macs on macOS 14+. It is ad-hoc signed and not Apple-notarized, so Gatekeeper may block downloaded builds; building locally remains the supported alpha starting point. Claude's session link (claude://code/continue) is undocumented and may change. There is no global hotkey, launch at login, notifications or notch island yet. Assistant runtime formats are private and version-dependent.

Agent Trail 0.1.0-alpha.7 — Pulse & Trail

Choose a tag to compare

@NotYaz NotYaz released this 01 Nov 14:54
49fb775

Agent Trail has a redesigned panel with richer statistics. Each project is now the repository where the edits actually landed, and it keeps its history when the folder moves.

  • Projects: a Pulse strip shows live sessions, edits in the last 7 days, active projects, and your day streak. Cards show a 30-day sparkline, recorded edits with the change from the previous 30 days, which profiles did the work, New and Dormant labels, and live status rings. Filter chips and sorting by edits, trend, or name sit in a pinned toolbar. Shortcuts: ⌘1, ⌘2, ⌘F, ⌘R.
  • Growth: it follows light and dark mode. It adds KPI tiles, a recorded-edits chart with a 7-day average and per-profile breakdown, a 26-week Trail calendar, a When edits land punch card by hour and weekday, the profile mix with delegated (subagent) edits, and Where edits landed.
  • Share card: the headline is built from your numbers, and a mini calendar is clipped to the period. A live preview is included. Names stay hidden unless you turn them on. Paths and hour-of-day data are never exported.
  • Projects follow the repository: each Claude, Codex, or Grok edit counts for the Git checkout that contains its files, so assistants started in different folders share one card. A link left at an old path is remembered, and a plain move is followed. Locate… handles the rest. Codex helper threads join their parent's project.
  • Honest numbers: days are local and start at 05:00, so late-night work counts toward the evening it began. Changes appear only when saved history covers the earlier period, because assistants delete old sessions.
  • New palette: Claude · Second is magenta, Codex violet, and Grok teal, so profile colors no longer resemble the amber and green status colors.
  • Fixes: scans no longer stall at launch when a project lives under ~/Documents. Idle CPU with the panel open dropped from about 31% to about 7%.

Validation: 266 tests pass on Apple Silicon and Intel CI. The release was checked against real local history with 19 projects across Claude, Codex, and Grok.

The universal2 ZIP supports Apple Silicon and Intel Macs on macOS 14+. It is ad-hoc signed and not Apple-notarized, so Gatekeeper may block downloaded builds. Building locally remains the supported alpha starting point. The Codex and Grok history caches rebuild once, and a new project-locations.json stores learned folder locations. There is no global hotkey, launch at login, shell-edit attribution, or exact-conversation navigation yet. Assistant runtime formats are private and version-dependent.

Agent Trail 0.1.0-alpha.6 — Live across agents

Choose a tag to compare

@NotYaz NotYaz released this 31 Oct 09:45

Agent Trail now brings Claude, Codex, and Grok live sessions into the same Projects view, with a cleaner Growth chart and consistent profile colors.

  • Codex: verified app-server thread-writer handles plus read-only turn metadata show Working, Idle, or Unknown. Pending approval/input dialogs cannot yet be distinguished from an active turn.
  • Grok: process-verified registered sessions and explicit turn/permission events show Working, Idle, Needs input, or Unknown. Stale registrations alone do not create a live state.
  • Growth: fewer compact Y-axis labels, a taller chart, wrapping profile legend, selected-day focus, and a more compact four-profile map. Existing smooth chart/number transitions and Reduce Motion remain supported.
  • Published optional funding links, including Buy Me a Coffee. GitHub Sponsors is configured for when sponsorship is available on the account. No crypto address is configured.
  • Added read-only AgentTrailInspect --live diagnostics and refreshed synthetic previews.

Validation: 142 tests pass. The running-app check found Codex Working/Idle and Grok Idle sessions without changing assistant processes. Apple Silicon and Intel CI test/build checks pass.

The universal2 ZIP supports Apple Silicon and Intel Macs on macOS 14+. It is ad-hoc signed and not Apple-notarized; Gatekeeper may block downloaded builds. Building locally remains the supported alpha starting point. No global hotkey, launch at login, shell-edit attribution, or exact-conversation navigation yet. Assistant runtime formats are private and version-dependent.

Agent Trail v0.1.0-alpha.5

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@NotYaz NotYaz released this 31 Oct 08:20

Agent Trail now reads recorded history from Claude Desktop, Codex, and Grok. Projects sharing the same canonical folder merge across profiles, and the Growth view includes each source's confirmed edits and saved sessions.

  • Codex: completed FileChange items, validated move destinations, nested workspace context, replay deduplication, and a separate incremental cache.
  • Grok: completed write/search_replace calls with positive EditsApplied evidence, strict project-path checks, and a separate incremental cache.
  • Claude: explicit waiting reports now show Needs input, distinct from Idle. Amber counts and a filter surface projects needing attention.
  • Review fixes preserve all assistants during startup indexing, isolate custom cache filenames, reject unsupported edit results, and enforce the JSONL size limit before parsing. Adapter caches rebuild once as version 2.
  • History-only profiles have clear labels instead of focus buttons. Existing saved profile configurations remain unchanged; defaults include all four profiles when settings are absent.

Validation: 112 tests pass, including new adapter, migration, input-state, and large-record regressions. Read-only local validation covered real Claude, Codex, and Grok records; native cards, search, filtering, and four-profile Growth statistics were checked. Universal2 packaging contains arm64 and x86_64 executables.

Live status and Needs input currently use Claude Desktop's explicit registry only. Codex/Grok use recorded cwd paths, without inferred live status or origin/worktree mapping. Compressed Codex archives and shell/external edits are not attributed. Builds are ad-hoc signed and not notarized; building locally remains the supported starting point. Donation configuration remains unpublished.

Agent Trail v0.1.0-alpha.3

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@NotYaz NotYaz released this 30 Oct 19:10

Projects and live activity now share one view. Each project shows its reported working, idle, and unknown session totals, with counts for each agent profile and expandable workspace details.

  • Working projects appear first, with a Working now filter alongside search and shared-project filtering.
  • Live-only projects appear immediately without invented edit history. A missing live report remains unreported rather than being labeled idle.
  • Growth charts now animate: bars grow from zero on fixed scales, branches draw outward, and nodes appear over 0.42 seconds alongside the numeric transitions. Rapid project/period switches keep their own selection state. Reduce Motion shows the final state immediately.
  • Refreshed synthetic previews and documentation. The former Live tab is merged into Projects.

Validation: 71 tests pass, including 13 new aggregation/join fixtures. Combined cards, expandable details, filtering, rapid chart switching, and period changes were checked in the native floating panel. Universal2 packaging contains arm64 and x86_64 executables.

Public alpha for macOS 14+, supporting Claude Desktop profiles. Live means Claude's reported state; edit attribution still covers successful recorded Edit/Write operations rather than shell or external changes. Builds are ad-hoc signed and not notarized; building from source remains the supported starting point. Donations remain unconfigured.

Agent Trail v0.1.0-alpha.2

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@NotYaz NotYaz released this 30 Oct 18:50

Agent Trail now keeps Projects, Live, and Growth in one floating menu-bar panel.

  • New Live tab shows Claude Desktop's reported Working, Idle, and Unknown sessions, with working sessions first, profile focus, workspace details, and report ages. It polls local status every three seconds and verifies process identity, including long-running jobs.
  • Fixed graph selection carrying across projects and partial-history flicker during refreshes.
  • Added gentle tab and graph transitions that respect Reduce Motion. Project and period selections survive switching tabs.
  • Updated sample previews and privacy documentation.

Validation: 58 tests pass; universal2 packaging contains arm64 and x86_64 executables. Live polling and the unified panel were checked locally with two running Claude Desktop profiles.

This remains a public alpha for macOS 14+. Claude Desktop is the supported adapter. A reported busy state does not establish that a file is being written; shell/external edits remain outside attribution. Builds are ad-hoc signed and not notarized; building from source is the supported starting point. Donations remain unconfigured.
