What's new

  • Discovery in Watch. Home can be narrowed to the streaming services you use (Netflix, Apple TV+, Disney+, Prime Video and more), from the public catalogs of a community add-on you install in one click from the services sheet. Genre tiles, and The Edit: editorial collections (awards, directors, studios, themes) renewed every two weeks. Shelves scroll without scroll bars, with a livelier, elastic feel.
  • Choose a Version. Every stream of a title is read into plain facts (resolution, HDR or Dolby Vision, sound, language, size, peers), with filters, so anyone can pick one without knowing the jargon. Short animated tips explain the words that remain.
  • History, favorites and resume. Favorites and History in the sidebar, Continue Watching on Watch's Home, playback that resumes where it stopped (also after quitting MacLC), and Mark as Watched. Everything stays on your Mac.
  • Torrents you can follow. Playback starts once a few seconds of the film are verified, the buffer adapts to the speed of the swarm, and peers are found in seconds after the first launch. An animated screen explains what happens while a torrent opens, and a marker on the playback bar shows what is downloaded ahead, the speed and the peers.
  • YouTube. A YouTube section in the sidebar: Home, Subscriptions, History, Watch Later, Liked Videos and Playlists, with search, channels and playlists, on yt-dlp. Signing in is optional: Google's own sign-in page in a private web view (MacLC never sees your password), or the session of a browser where you are already signed in. Sign Out deletes the saved session.

MacLC itself ships no films, shows or streams; add-ons are third-party services, so use them only for content you have the right to watch. MacLC is not affiliated with YouTube, Google or any streaming service named in the app.

Fixes

  • Quitting right after a large torrent could leave MacLC frozen for about 40 seconds. Leaving a torrent is now bounded to 3 seconds, and if quitting ever stalls, MacLC writes a diagnostic report to ~/Library/Logs/MacLC/ and ends.

Install and first launch

  1. Open the disk image and drag MacLC to Applications.
  2. Open MacLC once. macOS says it could not verify MacLC is free of malware: click Done.
  3. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security, scroll to Security and click Open Anyway next to "MacLC was blocked…", then confirm with your password or Touch ID. Only needed once.

Why this step? macOS opens downloaded apps without asking only when they are signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple, which requires a paid Apple Developer Program membership (99 USD a year). MacLC is a free, open-source project: it is signed ad hoc, which proves the files were not altered since the build but does not identify the author to Apple. macOS therefore asks you to confirm once. It does not mean the app is damaged or unsafe; the source is public and the SHA-256 of the disk image is below. The disk image contains the same explanation in English and French, and the README has the details (Terminal alternative included).

If macOS ever says MacLC "is damaged", the download is incomplete: download it again and compare the SHA-256.

Requirements

macOS 26 or later, Apple Silicon. Watch, add-ons and YouTube need an internet connection. Optional: yt-dlp for the YouTube section and File › Open Web Video (brew install yt-dlp, kept up to date), SVP 4 Mac for the SVP interpolation engine.
