Quran v0.0.9-beta

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 31 Oct 15:50

What's new

First-run setup

  • Translation language follows your region. If you just press Next, the app suggests a translation language from your device's region (Bengali for Bangladesh, for example) and starts with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's Bengali translation. Every language and translator is still one click away.
  • Bigger theme previews. The fifteen themes are shown five to a row, each with the full Bismillah, so you can judge the look before choosing. Settings → Theme uses the same layout.
  • The translation step now says what it is. It is called "Translation" and asks for your translation language, with a note that the app itself stays in English.
  • A clearer last page. "You are ready" has a check badge, larger cards and real keycaps for the shortcuts.

Sidebar

  • Resizable. Drag the sidebar's right edge to make it wider or narrower (260–480 px). Double-click the edge to reset. Your width is remembered.

Fixes

  • The window opens at the right size. It no longer appears small and then jumps to your saved size. New installs start at 1440 × 900.

About

  • A Source code link to the GitHub repository in Settings → About.

Install

  • Windows 10 / 11: download Quran_<version>_x64-setup.exe. It installs for your user only. SmartScreen may warn because the app is not code-signed yet: choose More info → Run anyway.
  • macOS: download Quran_<version>_universal.dmg.
  • Already installed? Open Settings → Updates; the new version downloads in the background.

Free and open source (GPL-3.0), no ads. Please report anything that looks wrong, especially in the Arabic text, in Issues.

@github-actions github-actions released this 28 Oct 19:49

What's new

Star your surahs

  • Star the surahs you read most. Hover a surah in the list and click its star, or right-click it and choose Star. Starred surahs appear under Starred at the top of the list and stay in their place in the full list too.

Listening

  • A repeat button in the player bar loops the current surah, handy for memorising. It lights up while it is on.
  • A separate Audio manager in Settings (under Listen). Pick a reciter, download or delete single surahs or all of them, and choose what stays offline. The Listening page now holds only the player and following-along options.

Easier to find your way

  • Verse by Verse and Reading are easier to tell apart. The view you are in is a solid gold block, like the Play button.
  • A clearer last page in the first-run setup. "You are ready" now shows where things are: the surah list, the two reading views, listening, clicking a word, offline audio and Settings.

Fixes

  • No more flicker when opening a surah in Reading mode. The new page used to show for a moment at the wrong text size, then jump. It now appears once, at the right size.

Quran v0.0.7-beta

@github-actions github-actions released this 28 Oct 19:06

What's new

Fifteen themes

  • Nine new themes. Dark: Tahajjud, Tide, Fjord, Graphite, Moss, Sidr and Rosewood. Light: Sage and Rosewater. They are plain, calm colours with no patterns, chosen to be easy on the eyes: off-white text instead of pure white, dark grey surfaces instead of pure black, and softer accents. Every colour pair is checked for contrast.
  • Black is gone. It was too harsh. If you had it selected, the app now uses Night, which keeps the same gold accent.
  • Brighter text in the dark themes. The Arabic and the translation were dull and hard to read; both are clearer now, and the translation is no longer dimmed.
  • The first-run setup shows all themes in two tidy rows.

Small fixes

  • The surah list is no longer squeezed. Its rows now reach the same edge as the search box above, instead of stopping short because of the scrollbar.
  • The "saved offline" button in the player bar is a clean circle with no uneven yellowish halo behind it.

Tell us what you want

  • Settings → About now links to GitHub, a feature request form and the bug report form. Suggest a feature from inside the app.

Quran v0.0.6-beta

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 28 Oct 13:49

What's new

Smoother reading

  • Scroll mode in long surahs such as Al-Baqarah is much smoother. Pages are prepared before you reach them, the nearest first, pages off screen cost nothing to draw, and the text size of every page now ships with the app. Scrolling very fast is still not perfect.
  • No more flash of broken letters when a page appears.

Tips that appear when they help

  • Small tips offer a setting when you keep doing what it is for. Turning pages suggests two pages side by side, a translation in your language, scrolling instead of pages, and zoom with Fit or Fill. Others cover keeping the player in view, staying with the recitation, and a wider page.
  • At most one tip per session and one per day, never when you have already changed the setting. Switch them all off in Settings → App & window → Show tips.

A clearer look

  • One button style everywhere, with fills instead of outlines. Buttons are soft fills, the chosen option is tinted with the accent, and the page-turn arrows, zoom buttons, pickers, tabs setup cards and the buttons in Settings (Download, Delete, Reset) all match.
  • A new language step in the first-run setup: a searchable list of languages beside the list of translations, with the translator shown for each.
  • A smoother player bar. It floats as a rounded card, slides in and out more gently, and has a round play button, a seek knob and a styled volume slider.

Controls outside the window

  • Windows: hover the taskbar icon and the preview shows Previous surah, Play/Pause and Next surah buttons.
  • macOS and Linux: the system media controls and media keys show what is playing and control it.

Updates and safety

  • A bottom-left notice says when a new version is ready, with one button, Restart to update.
  • The app now has a content security policy, limiting what the window may load.
  • Linux: the AppImage no longer stops with "Could not load this surah".
  • macOS: fixed the Mushaf pages and script styles not showing (a browser feature the Mac's web engine lacks stopped every page from being laid out). Plain-text scripts no longer spread words across the line.
  • Ctrl+Shift+I (Cmd+Shift+I on a Mac) opens the web inspector, which helps report problems.
  • Release builds now use pinned versions of their build steps.

Quran v0.0.5-beta

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 27 Oct 21:03

What's new

Linux

  • Linux builds for the first time: an AppImage (updates itself), a .deb package (Debian, Ubuntu) and an .rpm package (Fedora, openSUSE). They are untested on a real Linux desktop, so please report problems.

First run and reading

  • A short first-run setup for theme, size, mode, script style, language and word meanings. Skip it any time.
  • Word meanings follow your translation's language, not just English.
  • Verse by Verse is the default mode, including for the verse of the day.
  • The bundled text and page fonts refresh weekly in the background (online only), so corrections reach you without a new installer.

Listening

  • 92 more reciters that play whole surahs, listed separately as Listen only, and bigger speed and volume icons in the player.

Picks up where you left off

  • Continue where I left off (on by default, in Settings): the app reopens on the surah and verse you were reading, in both Verse by Verse and Reading modes. Turn it off to always start at Al-Fatihah.
  • The player bar now shows when you hover it, by default.

Settings

  • Reorganised into 8 pages (Appearance, Translation & meanings, Mushaf pages, Listening, Reminders, App & window, Data & help, About) with search across every setting.
  • Reset a single setting, see everything you changed from the default, or reset all.
  • A new About page with the version, updates, source code link, the website (qurandesktop.netlify.app) and developer details.

Look and feel

  • A custom tooltip everywhere, with the keyboard shortcut shown as a key. The zoom buttons show the percentage they change to.
  • Zoom, Fit and Fill for the interface, and a new Black and gold theme.
  • A bigger first-run setup whose theme and script previews match the ones in Settings, with a clearer marker for the current step.
  • Reciter portraits for more reciters, bundled in the app so they show offline.

Fixes

  • Zoom is smooth in both Verse by Verse and Reading, and the zoom buttons show the current level (they used to show a stale 100%).
  • Linux: the AppImage now carries its audio plugins (playing a surah froze the window on Fedora). Linux and macOS use the system's own title bar.
  • Continue where I left off also remembers how far the recitation got and reopens paused at that moment.
  • Reopening from the tray: the top bar and player could be missing, with the page scrolled out of place. The app now re-measures the window and resets the scroll when it comes back.
  • Uninstaller: it now shows the Quran icon instead of the default one.

Quran v0.0.4-beta

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 27 Oct 14:51

What's new

The whole Quran is in the installer

  • Reads with no internet from the first launch. The Arabic text of all 114 surahs (with Tajweed markup and IndoPak spelling) and all 604 Mushaf page fonts now ship with the app. Only audio, other translations and reciter portraits need a connection.
  • The installer is larger because of this (about 100 MB), and so are updates.

Reading

  • Smoother Reading scroll mode. Only the pages near the window are drawn, so long surahs scroll without lag and the playing verse is followed without stutter.

Fixes

  • Tajweed: the word highlight now matches the Tajweed letters and keeps the rule colours as the recitation sweeps through each word. Added the missing colours for Ikhfa and the obligatory Madd rules.

Quran v0.0.3-beta

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 27 Oct 12:16

What's new

Always there, never twice

  • Runs in the system tray. Closing the window keeps Quran running (switch it off in Settings → Reminders). Opening Quran again brings the running window back instead of starting a second copy.
  • Start with the computer (optional), quietly into the tray.
  • Reminders and the Verse of the Day arrive as Windows notifications even when the window is closed.
  • The window remembers its size, position and maximised state, saved as soon as you change it.

Reading

  • Lock on the playing verse. In the scrolling views, scrolling away only lasts a moment; the view returns to the verse being recited, kept whole on screen (or the lines being recited, if the verse is taller than the window). With the lock off, an arrow in the corner takes you back to the verse.
  • A larger two-page spread with narrower margins, so the Arabic is easier to read.
  • Player bar on hover (optional): Settings → Listening → "Show the bar only on hover". The back-to-verse arrow rises above the bar while it is showing.
  • Interface size: 110% replaces 115%, and you can type any percentage from 50 to 200.
  • The translation picker stays on the left of the bar; the meanings, zoom and lock controls are on the right.

Fixes

  • Changing the Arabic style while audio plays no longer breaks the text, and Tajweed marks no longer show as raw tags.
  • The script cards in Settings no longer overlap. Amiri Quran, Noto Naskh Arabic and Scheherazade New are now bundled, because Windows doesn't include them.

@github-actions github-actions released this 26 Oct 22:41

What's new

Listening

  • Play button in the title bar to start listening; the player bar now slides open and closed smoothly.
  • Click a verse number to play that verse; right-click it for the menu. Click a word to hear it.
  • Right-click any surah in the list: Read, Listen, Download, Remove or Copy name.
  • Download status and percentages on the player's download icon and in Settings → Audio manager.
  • Loading indicator on slow connections, so a new reciter no longer looks frozen.
  • Favourite surahs stay offline automatically, and are removed after a month without listening. Your own downloads are never removed.
  • Smoother word-by-word sweep and glow, with no sudden jumps between words.
  • Removed two reciters (Abdul Basit Mujawwad and the second Mishary Alafasy Murattal); anyone using them is moved to another reciter.

Reading

  • Two-page spread reads right to left, like an Arabic book (page 2 on the right, page 3 on its left).
  • Mouse side buttons go back and forward.
  • Page turns, sidebar, Settings and long surahs open much more smoothly.
  • Settings no longer shows the surah list; searchable translation picker.

App

  • In-app updates (Settings → Updates).
  • New icon, shaped as a rounded square and larger on the taskbar.
  • The interface uses the Inter font, bundled with the app.
  • Focus mode is switched off for now.
