@weqaar weqaar released this 02 Nov 18:53

The first preview images of PyrixOS, a reproducible, declarative Linux distribution described in Python. They are for testing and evaluation, not for production use: the disk, live and virtual machine images log root in on the console without a password.

Every image is built from source in the Lattice build sandbox from the published bootstrap seed. Each disk image was booted in QEMU before release, and the x86_64 installer image was tested by installing a system to a second disk and booting it.

Architecture Images Tested with
x86_64 Disk image, installer image, live ISO, network boot files, qcow2, VHDX, VDI, WSL root file system UEFI (OVMF), BIOS (SeaBIOS) for the live ISO, PXE for network boot
riscv64 Disk image, U-Boot and OpenSBI firmware UEFI (EDK2), U-Boot
aarch64 Disk image, U-Boot firmware UEFI (AAVMF), U-Boot
Asset Use
pyrixos-0.1.0-ARCH.img.xz Decompress and write to a disk, or boot in QEMU
pyrixos-installer-0.1.0-x86_64.img.xz Write to a USB stick and boot it; pyrixos-install DISK installs the system and sets the root password
pyrixos-live-0.1.0-x86_64.iso Boot from a CD or, written as it is, from a USB stick, with UEFI or BIOS
pyrixos-netboot-0.1.0-x86_64.tar.xz Serve over TFTP and HTTP to boot over PXE; holds ipxe.efi and boot.ipxe
pyrixos-0.1.0-x86_64.qcow2.xz, .vhdx.xz, .vdi.xz Decompress and attach to a QEMU, Hyper-V or VirtualBox virtual machine
pyrixos-wsl-0.1.0-x86_64.tar.gz wsl --import PyrixOS C:\WSL\PyrixOS pyrixos-wsl-0.1.0-x86_64.tar.gz
pyrixos-u-boot-0.1.0-ARCH.tar.xz Firmware for riscv64 and aarch64 machines without UEFI
SHA256SUMS sha256sum -c --ignore-missing SHA256SUMS

To try the x86_64 disk image in QEMU with UEFI firmware (the ovmf package on Debian and Ubuntu):

sha256sum -c --ignore-missing SHA256SUMS
xz -d pyrixos-0.1.0-x86_64.img.xz
cp /usr/share/OVMF/OVMF_VARS_4M.fd vars.fd
qemu-system-x86_64 -machine q35 -accel kvm -m 2048 -nographic \
  -drive if=pflash,format=raw,readonly=on,file=/usr/share/OVMF/OVMF_CODE_4M.fd \
  -drive if=pflash,format=raw,file=vars.fd \
  -drive file=pyrixos-0.1.0-x86_64.img,format=raw,if=virtio

Building the images yourself, and running your own binary cache, is described in Building PyrixOS and the binary cache. The work that remains before PyrixOS 1.0 is in the development plan.
