VOOL 0.7.3-beta

VOOL is a private AI station that runs on your own computer. This beta adds goals that VOOL works through step by step and lets you run more commands from chat, with the exact command shown before it runs. Forget now removes text from VOOL's memory file, and the activity view uses plain words. It also stops a paid answer from counting twice and finishes wallet payments to contacts.

What's new

  • Goals. Type /goal followed by what you want done. VOOL plans the steps and works through them, with a card above the message box to pause, resume or stop. A goal never spends money by itself, and it waits while the chat is private.
  • Run commands from chat. VOOL can run more everyday tools in its sandbox, such as make, go, uv, linters and formatters, and command lines chained together. The approval card shows the exact command before it runs. An install gets internet access only after your OK. If a command fails, you see its exit code and output.
  • Plain words in Activity. The Activity panel and the card under each reply say what happened in plain words, in your app language, for example "Looked up the weather: it didn't work". Failures show as failures. The technical details are still there when you open a row.
  • No model yet? VOOL says so. On a new install with no AI model, VOOL says plainly that it needs one and shows a "Set up a model" button, even before your first message. It also finds a local model that runs at another address on this computer.
  • Better Auto model choice. Auto picks only a model that can do what the task needs, such as using tools or reading images. A model you pick yourself handles the whole answer, tool steps included. A brief hiccup from a free model is retried once on the same model.
  • One chat, two windows. If a chat is still answering in another window, your new message waits its turn instead of starting a second answer. If it cannot wait, your text goes back to the message box.
  • Smooth long answers. Very long answers keep streaming smoothly to the end.
  • Exported chats with real names. An exported chat is named after the chat and the date, and starts with a short header that says what is left out. The desktop app's save dialog offers the same name. A single exported answer is never named after your question.
  • Notes that make sense. "Write a note to my neighbour" now writes the note instead of opening a save form. "Take a note to buy milk" still saves it, and a time like 10:30 no longer splits a note in two.
  • Fixes. One question keeps one answer after a reload. After you press Allow, the action you approved is the one that runs, even if you sent another message in the meantime. Cooking questions like "what oven temperature for roasting potatoes" are no longer treated as weather lookups. When the model sets up a step wrong, VOOL asks it once to fix it. Keyboard hints show Ctrl on Linux.

Privacy and safety

  • Forget removes the text from the memory file. Forget now erases the forgotten words from VOOL's local memory file and its search index. It also erases them from long text you pasted into that chat. "Forget A and forget B" forgets both, the count shows only memory that was really removed, and curly apostrophes work too.
  • "Go online on its own" covers more. With the switch off, VOOL also skips update checks and online calendar sync. The update button, Settings and the Calendars panel say so calmly and link to the switch. Calendars on this computer keep working.
  • Spending limits count each paid answer once. A paid cloud answer could be counted twice against your spending limits. Each answer now counts once, and a charge VOOL cannot confirm is held at that call's approved limit.
  • Security updates. The image library (pillow 13.0.0) and the list of trusted website certificates (certifi 2026.10.19) are updated with their latest security fixes.

Connections

  • Calendar. Remove a calendar account from Settings. VOOL forgets the calendars you chose, the events it copied and its pending alerts. Nothing changes in the calendar itself. Each account card now says in plain words what to do next.
  • Apple Calendar and Contacts on Mac. The Mac app can now use Apple Calendar and Apple Contacts once macOS has your permission. For Calendar, VOOL asks only when you add an account or refresh the calendar list in Settings.

Crypto (off by default)
Crypto features are off until you turn them on. When on, VOOL uses mainnet. Every payment goes through VOOL's wallet, with its limits, your approval and a receipt.

  • Paying a contact. A payment to a saved contact goes only to the exact address you reviewed. If the contact changes, VOOL asks you to review it again.
  • Clear about which accounts can send. On mainnet, a connected or watch-only account can receive and show its balance, but cannot send from VOOL. Only a VOOL Wallet created on this device sends. VOOL says why, and nothing is signed. If VOOL cannot read the account or the network, it does not send.
  • Clearer Wallet panel. Exact amounts, real times, and a "Not sent" receipt when a payment is declined or cancelled.

Updating from 0.7.2, 0.7.1 or 0.7.0: download 0.7.3 below and install it over your current version. Your chats and settings live in your profile, outside the app.

Install on a Mac (Apple Silicon or Intel)

  1. Pick the download that matches your chip: Apple menu > About This Mac.
  2. Optional: check the download in Terminal with shasum -a 256 VOOL-0.7.3-beta-macos-<arm64 or x86_64>.dmg. Compare the result with the table above.
  3. Open the DMG and drag VOOL to Applications.
  4. The app is not notarized. On first open, double-click VOOL and click Done. Then go to System Settings > Privacy & Security, click Open Anyway, and confirm with your password. On macOS 14, Control-click VOOL and choose Open instead.
  5. Before a local model can write answers, open Settings > Models & Providers > Local models and press Certify for it once.

No sudo or system Python is needed. VOOL appears in your application menu and opens the chat in your browser. To remove it, run bash ~/.local/share/vool/current/uninstall.sh. Your profile is kept.

Known limits in this beta

  • Skill Codex: Browse Skill Codex shows the skills listed for your exact VOOL version, and you review a skill before it installs. To share a skill you made, press Publish to Skill Codex. VOOL checks the skill on your computer, then opens the Skill Codex website with it filled in. You sign in there and press Send; VOOL sends nothing itself. For now only the skill's text goes along, so a skill with extra files cannot be shared yet.
  • After a forget, VOOL keeps the words you asked it to forget in a short list on your computer, so it can keep refusing them.
  • On Intel Macs, local models run on the processor and are slow. A long memory answer can time out, so use a cloud model there for now.
  • Paying websites through Solana pay-kit is not included in the downloads. That channel shows as not usable on this install.
  • No live mainnet payment has been made yet with x402 or pay-per-answer AI services.
  • Before a local model can write answers, press Certify for it once (Settings > Models & Providers > Local models).
  • Scanned-PDF reading works on Macs only.
  • The Mac app is not notarized (see the first-open steps above).
