VOOL 0.7.7-beta

A safety and polish update: safer updates, a wallet that asks you first, and a more thorough forget.

New

  • The wallet asks you first. Wallet settings that loosen what can be paid (raising a spending cap, switching to Mainnet, turning on a payment channel, adding an AI endpoint) now ask for your wallet PIN, password or Touch ID. Turning things off never asks.
  • Hide or show the pet. Settings has a Hide pet / Show pet switch, and hiding it leaves nothing behind on screen.
  • Calmer message actions. The buttons under an answer (copy, pin, try again and the rest) are a small row of icons below the answer, so they no longer cover its text.

Fixes

  • Updates are safer. If an update fails, VOOL goes back to the version you had, keeps checking for newer versions and skips only the one that failed.
  • Forget reaches more places. When you ask VOOL to forget something, it is also removed from update backups, logs, the chat's helper files and undo copies. If a copy cannot be changed, the reply says which one.
  • Your keys stay yours. A paired phone never uses your paid chain-data keys, and spending caps for paid models must be real numbers.
  • "How big is this file?" answers about the file or folder you named, and only that one.
  • Prices from memory are not passed off as today's price. A price VOOL recorded earlier is not shown as the current price.
  • Keys: a working key shows a green light, and removing one is a plain Remove button.

Updating

  • From 0.7.5 or 0.7.6: the update notice comes by itself when "Go online on its own" is on. Press Update.
  • From 0.7.4 or 0.7.3 on a Mac: turn on "Go online on its own" (Settings > Privacy & Permissions), then press Check for updates once in the header update menu.
  • From 0.7.4 or older on Linux, or 0.7.2 and older on a Mac: download 0.7.7 below and install it over your current version. Your chats and settings stay in your profile.

Install on a Mac (Apple Silicon or Intel)

  1. Pick the download that matches your chip: Apple menu > About This Mac.
  2. Optional: check the download in Terminal with shasum -a 256 VOOL-0.7.7-beta-macos-<arm64 or x86_64>.dmg. Compare the result with the table above.
  3. Open the DMG and drag VOOL to Applications.
  4. The app is not notarized. On first open, double-click VOOL and click Done. Then go to System Settings > Privacy & Security, click Open Anyway, and confirm with your password. On macOS 14, Control-click VOOL and choose Open instead.
  5. Before a local model can write answers, open Settings > Models & Providers > Local models and press Certify for it once.

No sudo or system Python is needed. VOOL appears in your application menu and opens the chat in your browser. To remove it, run bash ~/.local/share/vool/current/uninstall.sh. Your profile is kept.

Known limits in this beta

  • Skill Codex: Browse Skill Codex shows the skills listed for your exact VOOL version, and you review a skill before it installs. To share a skill you made, press Publish to Skill Codex. VOOL checks the skill on your computer, then opens the Skill Codex website with it filled in. You sign in there and press Send; VOOL sends nothing itself. For now only the skill's text goes along, so a skill with extra files cannot be shared yet.
  • After a forget, VOOL keeps the words you asked it to forget in a short list on your computer, so it can keep refusing them.
  • On Intel Macs, local models run on the processor and are slow. A long memory answer can time out, so use a cloud model there for now.
  • Paying websites through Solana pay-kit is not included in the downloads. That channel shows as not usable on this install.
  • No live mainnet payment has been made yet with x402 or pay-per-answer AI services.
  • Before a local model can write answers, press Certify for it once (Settings > Models & Providers > Local models).
  • Scanned-PDF reading works on Macs only.
  • The Mac app is not notarized (see the first-open steps above).
