Head
In the context of GPT-J, a head refers to the output layer or layers of the model, which produce the final predictions or outputs based on the input data. The term "head" comes from the fact that these layers are typically located at the "top" or end of the neural network architecture, where they process the final representation of the input data.
In GPT-J, the output head is responsible for generating the text output based on the input prompt or context. The output head can take various forms, depending on the specific task or application for which the model is being used. For example, the output head might consist of a single linear layer that produces a probability distribution over the vocabulary for the next word in the generated text, or it might consist of multiple layers that encode additional information about the input context or generate structured output such as tables or graphs.
The output head is trained in conjunction with the rest of the model using techniques such as backpropagation and gradient descent, in order to optimize the model's performance on the specific task or tasks for which it is being used. By adjusting the weights and biases of the output head during training, the model learns to generate high-quality text that is relevant and coherent given the input context.
