v0.4.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 30 Oct 14:56

Future Cop: L.A.P.D. (1998) as a native program: the game's own FCopLAPD.exe is recompiled to native code when it starts, and everything it needs from Windows and DirectX is rebuilt in Rust on OpenGL. No game files are included: you need your own copy of the PC version.

New in 0.4.0

Replacement textures (HD textures).

  • PNGs in game_files/Textures replace the game's textures, up to 4x their size and with real transparency.
  • fcop export (in a terminal, in fcop's folder) cuts the game's texture pages into single pictures, named after the models and terrain that use them, with their texture coordinates as JSON. fcop import puts changed pictures back into replacement pages.
  • tools/texview (in the source, built separately) browses these pictures: UV grid, the original beside the changed one, its place on the page.
  • FCOP_DUMP_TEXTURES=1 writes every texture the game uses to game_files/Textures/dump.
  • See "Replacement textures" in the README.

Gamepads.

  • Sticks are analog now: how far you push decides how fast the robot moves, turns and sidesteps (jink), each direction on its own. In network games movement stays digital, as the game only sends directions.
  • The right stick's four directions can be assigned to actions in the Controller dialog.

Mouse buttons can be assigned in the Controller dialog, including the side buttons (Back/Forward): select an action, then press the button. For the left button, click the selected action a second time.

The cursor stays in the window during missions: hidden and held, so mouse buttons bound to actions keep working. Alt+Tab releases it.

Split screen at high frame rates: both views are drawn in between the game's frames, with both cameras moving smoothly.

Widescreen HUD: texts are no longer torn apart between the left, centre and right parts of the screen.

System File
Windows 10/11 (x64) fcop-v0.4.0-windows-x64.zip
Linux (x86-64, OpenGL 3.3) fcop-v0.4.0-linux-x64.tar.gz

Getting started

  1. Unpack the archive.
  2. Put an image of your CD (.iso or .bin) next to fcop.exe / fcop, or copy your game into the game_files folder. That can be the CD's contents, an image of the CD, or your installed game folder.
  3. Start fcop.exe on Windows, or ./fcop from its folder on Linux. It finds the game, checks that it is the supported version and keeps only what the game needs.

When you update from an earlier version, keep your game_files folder: your settings, key bindings and saves are in it.

What the port adds to the original

  • High resolutions, widescreen (Hor+), borderless fullscreen (Alt+Enter)
  • Anti-aliasing (MSAA), trilinear and anisotropic texture filtering
  • Frame rates from 60 to unlimited, with the game's own logic unchanged
  • Up to two gamepads with a modern button layout and analog sticks
  • Mouse buttons as controls
  • Replacement textures (HD textures)
  • Network play over TCP/IP (Host Game / Join Game, port 47624), also between Windows and Linux
  • Effects volume over the whole range, silent at 0
  • Arrow keys for player 1, a chase camera close behind the robot

All settings are in the game's own Preferences dialog.

v0.3.0: Faster start, start window on Linux

@github-actions github-actions released this 27 Oct 23:18

New in 0.3.0

Much faster start.

  • The game is now compiled on all CPU cores: the first start takes about a second instead of about six.
  • The compiled code is kept in game_files/FCopLAPD/compiled.bin. Every later start loads it in a fraction of a second.
  • A new version of fcop compiles once more on its first start.

Start window on Linux.

  • While fcop looks for the game, copies it from a CD image and compiles it, a small window now shows what it is doing, as on Windows.
  • If the game cannot start, the window shows why, with a Close button.

Checked on Linux:

  • Gamepads: an Xbox controller over the wireless adapter, with the xone driver.
  • Network play between Linux and Windows, in both directions.

v0.2.0: Windows and Linux

@github-actions github-actions released this 27 Oct 22:27

New in 0.2.0

Linux support. The game now runs natively on Linux (x86-64), on Wayland and X11. It is tested on CachyOS: menus, missions, videos and sound.

  • Effects volume: at 0 the effects are now silent. In the original the slider only went down to -16.7 dB, so effects could still be heard at 0. The volume now follows the slider over its whole range, as the music already did.
  • Crash reports on Linux: when the game crashes, the message names the game function it happened in, as on Windows.

On Linux, files in game_files that the game does not need are deleted. Windows moves them to the recycle bin. On Linux the messages go to the terminal.
