bakup v0.1.0 — Backup like you git
The first public release of bakup — self-hosted, git-like backup.
Commit snapshots offline in any folder, push them to your own server when
you're home. Content-addressed & deduplicated by sha256. No cloud, no
subscription, no code needed.
🌐 Website & interactive setup guide: https://kobraop9517.github.io/bakup-releases/
Highlights
- git-like workflow —
init·status·commit·push·log·restore - Offline-first — commits always work; push syncs when the server is reachable
- Deduplicated — identical files stored once across all machines and repos
- Zero-config server — one Docker container, auto-generates its access token on first run
- Native installers — Linux
.deb, Windows one-liner or GUI setup, pip wheel for everything else
Server (any box with Docker)
mkdir bakup-server && cd bakup-server
curl -LO https://github.com/kobraop9517/bakup-releases/releases/latest/download/docker-compose.yml
docker compose up -d
docker compose logs bakup-server # first run prints your access token — save itImage: kobraop9517/backup (works on x86 and ARM/Raspberry Pi)
Client
| OS | How |
|---|---|
| 🐧 Linux (Debian/Ubuntu) | download bakup_0.1.0_all.deb below → sudo apt install ./bakup_0.1.0_all.deb |
| 🪟 Windows | irm https://github.com/kobraop9517/bakup-releases/releases/latest/download/install.ps1 | iex — or run bakup-setup-0.1.0.exe |
| 🍎 macOS / any OS | pipx install <bakup-0.1.0-py3-none-any.whl URL below> (Python 3.9+) |
Then once per machine:
bakup config --server http://<server-ip>:8000 --token <TOKEN>⚠️ Good to know
- Keep the server on your LAN or behind a mesh VPN (Tailscale/WireGuard) — traffic is plain HTTP, so don't expose port 8000 to the internet
- Commits store metadata only; content uploads at push — push regularly
- The token is a password: anyone holding it can read and write your backups
