PHOTO home v1.1 — now speaking four languages

Choose a tag to compare

@RobertasTa RobertasTa released this 30 Aug 16:08

PHOTO home now speaks four languages: Lithuanian, English, Russian
and German. All 230 interface texts, every dialog, every warning —
not just the buttons.

On first launch the program picks your system's language by itself: a
Russian Windows opens in Russian, a German one in German. You can change
it any time in the top-right corner.

What that took, beyond translating

  • Plural forms per language. The program says "3 sources", "21 files",
"12 shelves" — and every language bends those words differently.
Lithuanian and Russian both have three forms, but they break at
different numbers: Lithuanian keeps the "few" form through 9, Russian
stops at 4. Copying our own rule would have shown a Russian user
"5 файла" instead of "5 файлов". Each language now has its own rule.
  • The language list fixed itself. It used to be "index 1 if English,
otherwise 0" — harmless with two languages, wrong with four: a Russian
user would have seen "Lietuvių" selected while the program spoke
    Russian.

Honest note about the translations

The Russian and German dictionaries were produced by a local language
model and reviewed afterwards, phrase by phrase, against the English and
Lithuanian originals. That review caught real mistakes — but a review is
not a native speaker. If something reads oddly in your language, please
tell us.
We would
rather fix a clumsy sentence than pretend it is not there.

The review also caught something in our own text: in the search bar the
same thing is called "paieška" in one button and "vaizdas" in another.
That inconsistency is still there and will be fixed separately — we did
not want to touch the keys while the dictionaries were being built on
them.

Two ways to get it

PhotoHome-1.1-setup.exe Installs like a normal program: Start menu entry, optional desktop icon, removal through Windows. Installs for your user only — no administrator prompt. Your archive index and UNDO journal are never touched by removal.
PhotoHome-1.1-win64.zip Unpack anywhere, run PhotoHome.exe. No installation, portable, leaves nothing behind.

Both hold the same program. The installer is new in this release, and it
exists for a plain reason: app catalogues and package managers can only
offer .exe or .msi files — a folder in a zip is invisible to them.

Everything else

Unchanged from v1.0.0, and all 31 automated checks are green. The
organizing engine, the Archive X-ray, the card file, the phone import and
the UNDO journal are exactly as they were.

macOS

The experimental macOS preview is not rebuilt for this release - it stays
at v1.0.0
with its own small print. It is still waiting for its first live Mac
tester; organizing remains locked in code there until then.

VirusTotal — all the numbers, including the ones we would rather not print

Update, 29 October 2026. Microsoft no longer flags these files. We
re-checked on VirusTotal: the installer is now
1/67
(DeepInstinct only) and PhotoHome.exe itself is
1/71
(SecureAge only). Two corrections to what we wrote below. First, the
file we reported to Microsoft was the v1.0.0 program; Microsoft stopped
flagging this version as well. Second, it took weeks, not the "days" we
guessed. We promised to say so here when it happened, and we are saying
it late.

The zip is 0/66
— clean everywhere. The installer is
3/71:
Microsoft (Trojan:Win32/Wacatac.B!ml), DeepInstinct and Arctic Wolf,
with the other 68 clean.

That Microsoft mark is not new to this release — the program inside
carried it already in v1.0.0, where we printed it too. It is a
machine-learning guess, not a signature: unsigned PyInstaller programs
collect such marks routinely, and the same program inside a zip is called
clean by the very same engines. We are reporting these files to
Microsoft as a false positive; such guesses are usually withdrawn within
days, and we will say here when it happens.

You do not have to take our word for any of it: paste a hash above into
virustotal.com and look, or build the exe
yourself from source — see BUILD.md.

PHOTO home v1.0.0 — the first release

Choose a tag to compare

@RobertasTa RobertasTa released this 29 Aug 15:03

A home photo archive organizer for Windows — free, open source, fully
offline. It catalogs the family photo chaos on your disks, tells you
when your photos were really taken — or honestly labels the date
unreliable — and (only when you press the button) lays everything out
into a clean Year\Month archive with a full one-click UNDO.

This is the first public release. Everything below is what the
program does today, verified by an automated test suite (32 checks,
all green) and live runs on real archives up to 931 GB / 58 665 media
files.

Highlights

  • Phone import over the cable. Android via USB: the program finds
photo locations itself (not only DCIM — WhatsApp and screenshots
too), copies them to your disk and never writes a byte to the phone.
Second run skips everything already taken. (iPhone: untested — see
    Known limitations.)
  • Archive X-ray. After indexing you get a saveable report: how
many files, where their dates come from, how many lack a reliable
date — and your "line in time" (from ~2009 your dates are
    reliable
    ). Nothing moves.
  • Card file. Thumbnails stay in the program and show in search
even when the drive is unplugged — pick with your eyes while the
    disk sits in a drawer.
  • Honest dates. EXIF (with backup fields and PNG-internal dates) →
file name → folder name → mtime with an explicit "unreliable" label →
and a careful surroundings layer (a homogeneous folder or an arrival
batch lends its median date, labeled as a guess).
  • Open in your own editor. Right-click → "Open with Photoshop /
Corel / anything you configure". The program never edits files.
  • Safety rails everywhere. Nothing is ever deleted; organizing
defaults to COPY; every move lands in an UNDO journal; junk files
(0-byte, fake .jpg) are left alone and explained.
  • Big-archive speed, measured: 58 665 media files on a real USB
HDD indexed in ~12 min (later runs ~2 min); 500 000-file synthetic
archive ~20 min, search under a second.

Known limitations

  • iPhone import is untested — neither of our test households owns
one. MTP behavior differs; the in-app guide shows the cloud-folder
    workaround. Reports welcome.
  • The supported build is Windows 10 or newer (a hard Qt6 limit —
Windows 7/8 will not start); for the experimental, untested macOS
preview see its own section below. The exe is unsigned — SmartScreen
will ask once (More info → Run anyway). Build it yourself from
    source in minutes: see BUILD.md.
  • Video-internal metadata (MP4 creation date) is not read yet — video
dates come from file names or honest mtime.

Files

  • PhotoHome-1.0.0-win64.zip — unpack anywhere, run PhotoHome.exe.
    No installation. sha256:
    1b34b9c671bca2c1ffd57cb9d441fba745e90e01250a4a5561de32e459a15dbf
  • VirusTotal — both numbers, including the less flattering one.
    The zip is
    0/66,
but that is the archive; the program inside is
    3/70
    — Arctic Wolf (Unsafe), SecureAge (Malicious) and Microsoft
(Trojan:Win32/Wacatac.B!ml), with the other 67 clean. Unsigned
PyInstaller programs collect such generic marks; the README explains
how to read them and how to check the file yourself. We print the
second number because quoting only the zip would look tidy and
mislead you. And you can always audit the source and build the exe
    yourself — see BUILD.md.
Update, 29 October 2026: Microsoft has since dropped its mark; this
    file is now 1/70,
    SecureAge only.

macOS — experimental preview (honest small print)

  • PhotoHome-1.0.0-macOS-experimental.zip — an unsigned .app built
in CI, never yet run on a real Mac by the authors. The read-only
tier works there in our CI checks (catalog, search, Archive X-ray,
thumbnails; 18 of 31 automated checks pass unchanged), and
organizing is locked in code on macOS until we have a live Mac
tester — so the app cannot touch your originals even by accident.
Shelf identity uses the volume UUID via diskutil. sha256:
    d77c13b3a0d17b5309ca5a9c0904c28485a0d3328dd2aab4908fddf550ddb0ff
  • Gatekeeper will block the unsigned app: right-click the app →
Open → Open (or xattr -cr PhotoHome.app in Terminal), once.
  • Own a Mac and willing to click around for 15 minutes? Open an
    issue — you would
be our first Mac tester, and unlocking the organizing tier waits
    exactly for you.
