Troubleshooting
"Session ended" in the top bar. Kelpy started again, or this browser signed out from another tab. Open the link
shown in the terminal where Kelpy runs, in the same tab or a new one, or run kelpy open. Text not sent yet stays
in the message box.
"Disconnected". Kelpy stopped, or the SSH tunnel to it closed. The page checks again every few seconds and catches up by itself when Kelpy answers; Send is disabled meanwhile. Start the tunnel again if it closed.
"Too many wrong codes. Wait N seconds, then try again." After 5 wrong codes Kelpy allows one attempt every 10
seconds, even with the right code. Wait, or run kelpy open on the computer where Kelpy runs.
"The code in the link was not accepted". The link is from an earlier start: each start has a new code. Use the
link Kelpy printed last, or run kelpy status to see it.
A page saying the executable was built without the Web UI. Kelpy was built from source before the Web UI. Run
bun install and bun run build in web/, then build Kelpy again.
"Port N of the last start was not available: open the new link, and set up an SSH tunnel again." Another program uses the port Kelpy had last time, so Kelpy took another one. Links and SSH tunnels to the old port no longer reach it.
"Kelpy is already running". One Kelpy runs per home; it prints the address of the one running. Run
kelpy open to use it, or kelpy stop to stop it.
Signing in as Codex CLI fails, or the code is refused. Sign-in with a code must be enabled in ChatGPT's security settings. A code expires after 15 minutes: get a new one.
Signing in as an agent: the browser cannot reach Kelpy after approval. OpenAI sends the browser back to
http://127.0.0.1:<port>/auth/callback. When Kelpy runs on a server, either open the Web UI through an SSH tunnel
before signing in, or sign in by running kelpy provider on the server: when the browser's page cannot be
reached, copy its address from the address bar and paste it there.
"OpenAI did not confirm that the ChatGPT session was revoked". Kelpy is signed out, but OpenAI could not be reached; the session ends on its own within 30 days.
Signed out, but "Kelpy could not delete data/chatgpt-session.toml". Another program held the file. Delete it yourself; if OpenAI did not confirm the revocation either, the next start would sign in again with it.
OpenRouter refuses a free model. Check Settings, Privacy in OpenRouter: some free models need providers that may train on prompts.
A free service answers that a limit was reached. Free tiers have per-minute and per-day limits: see Connecting to AI. Wait, or choose another service.
Ollama answers lose details of earlier messages, or are cut short. Ollama's default context is too short for
Kelpy, which then summarises the conversation every few messages. Set OLLAMA_CONTEXT_LENGTH=64000 in Ollama's
environment and restart Ollama.
Kelpy gives commands to run instead of looking. System access is None in this conversation: set it to Read-only under the message box. Or the model cannot use tools: some Ollama models cannot (Ollama lists tools among a model's capabilities); choose another one.
An action fails with "… is not installed". The command Kelpy uses for it is missing on this system, such as
ss and netstat for the listening ports. Install the distribution's package for it, or ask Kelpy for the command.
"No Ollama answers at …". Start Ollama, or check the address: http://<address>:11434/v1 for another computer.
Ollama on another computer must listen on the network (OLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0).
Windows refuses to replace kelpy.exe. A running executable cannot be overwritten on Windows. Run kelpy stop
first.
Removing Kelpy. Run kelpy stop, then kelpy cleanup: see Command line.
