Plume 0.4.0
Plume 0.4.0 makes plain text files work like Notepad, adds a clearer update flow, and ships a one-click Windows installer.
Text files
- Encoding and line endings are kept. Plume detects UTF-8 (with or without a BOM), UTF-16 and older ANSI files, and saves them back unchanged. Windows (CRLF), Unix (LF) and classic Mac (CR) line endings are preserved.
- Reopen with encoding. Files that open as garbage can be reopened as Windows-1251, 1250 or 1253, KOI8-R or ISO-8859-2/5 (these can also be saved). Shift_JIS, GBK, Big5 and EUC-KR open read-only.
- Status bar: line and column, zoom, the line ending and the encoding. Click either chip to change how the file is saved. Plain text shows the language it detected (JSON, YAML and so on).
- Go to line (
Ctrl+G) and insert date and time (Ctrl+Shift+D). - Spellcheck in the plain text and source views, for prose files only. Code is not marked up.
- Print and PDF include the whole document, not only the lines on screen.
Large files
- Text files up to 128 MiB open in full. Larger files open as a read-only preview of their first 5 MB. A preview can never be saved, so it cannot overwrite the file on disk.
- Measured on a Windows test machine: 10 MB opens in under half a second, 50 MB in about 2 seconds, and 105 MB in about 7 seconds (using about 1.2 GB of memory while open).
Updates and installation
- Update screen. Clicking Update shows one window with a progress bar, saves your open documents, restarts Plume and reopens them on the new version.
- Settings, About now shows the update status, the last check, and the Check, Update and Restart buttons, under the version number.
- One-click Windows installer, per user. No "Anyone or only for me" page.
Presentation
- A document with headings and no
---separators now presents one slide per heading.
Other fixes
- The unsaved-changes dot in the file list is drawn once, and no longer clips.
- The Windows app is named Plume (in the "Open with" dialog and in Task Manager).
Install notes
- Builds are not code-signed yet. Windows may show a "Windows protected your PC" warning the first time: click More info, then Run anyway.
- macOS builds are not notarised. Open System Settings, Privacy & Security and choose Open Anyway.
- Each release includes
SHA256SUMS.txtand a build-provenance attestation, so you can check your download.
