First public release of SkyLab, a self-hosted cloud for schools on top of Proxmox VE: students request VMs, teachers spin up whole classrooms, admins keep the cluster under control.

SkyLab is a capstone project by five students at National Taipei University of Business (NTUB), Taiwan, and it runs at our school.

Highlights

  • Request → approve → scheduled provisioning, with a capacity check for the requested time window
  • Whole-class batch provisioning from a roster, including multi-machine lab environments
  • Browser console: noVNC for VMs, xterm.js for LXC; students never see the PVE UI
  • Firewall map, port forwarding and domain reverse proxy through a gateway VM (nginx + WireGuard + nftables)
  • Governance: expiry dates, idle detection, quotas, crypto-mining detection, full audit log
  • Multiple Proxmox connections (standalone nodes or clusters)
  • Password, Google and LDAP/AD sign-in, optional per-account TOTP
  • Optional OpenAI-compatible AI API in front of self-hosted vLLM models (via LiteLLM)
  • UI in English, Traditional Chinese and Japanese

Install

Requirements: a Linux host with Docker Engine and Docker Compose ≥ 2.20, and a reachable Proxmox VE node or cluster.

# edit .env: at least SECRET_KEY, FIRST_SUPERUSER, FIRST_SUPERUSER_PASSWORD and POSTGRES_PASSWORD
docker compose up -d --build --scale litellm=0

Then open http://localhost:8082. The setup wizard creates the administrator, tests the Proxmox connection, and configures the IP subnet, gateway and platform entry.

Upgrading an existing checkout

Back up the database and .env first, then:

git fetch --tags origin
git checkout v1.0.0
docker compose up -d --build --scale litellm=0

Database migrations run automatically at startup. See Upgrading and migrations.
