SlamFrames 2.5

SlamFrames 2.5 is a stability and compatibility update focused on several issues discovered through extended gameplay testing on OctoWoW.

This release improves cast-bar timing and state handling, fixes UI layering conflicts, corrects enemy level difficulty colors, strengthens target aura timer rendering, and cleans up Ornate cast-bar flavor text.

What's New in 2.5

Cast-State Isolation

A significant issue was discovered where certain channelled actions — particularly Bandages — could leave stale timing information behind.

For example:

  1. Throw would display the correct cast timer.
  2. Using a Bandage would complete normally.
  3. Throw or Hearthstone afterward could display an incorrect timer.
  4. /reload would temporarily fix the problem.

SlamFrames now treats every new cast as a clean timing boundary.

Previous channel, profession, special-action, and pushback state is cleared before the next cast is initialized.

This prevents Bandages and other channelled actions from "poisoning" later cast-bar timing.

Improved Special-Action Cast Timing

Additional timing work has been done for actions that don't behave exactly like normal Vanilla spells.

This includes:

  • Throw
  • Shoot
  • Bandages
  • Hearthstone
  • Cooking
  • Crafting
  • Profession actions
  • World interactions

SlamFrames now separates normal spell timing from special-action timing rather than forcing everything through the same legacy pushback system.

Normal spells still retain the legacy pushback handling introduced in 2.0.

Fixed Profession / Tradeskill Detection

Some OctoWoW/SuperWoW APIs can expose boolean-like values numerically.

Because Lua considers 0 to be true, this could accidentally cause normal casts to enter SlamFrames' profession timing path.

SlamFrames now explicitly interprets the expected tradeskill values instead.

Dynamic UI Layering

SlamFrames previously had to choose between two undesirable behaviors:

  • Unit frames appearing above Blizzard panels such as Blacksmithing and Cooking.
  • World/nameplate frames appearing above SlamFrames.

2.5 introduces dynamic frame layering.

During normal gameplay, SlamFrames stays above world/nameplate frames.

When a Blizzard interface panel is opened, SlamFrames automatically moves underneath it.

When the panel closes, SlamFrames returns to its normal layer.

This applies to interfaces such as:

  • Blacksmithing
  • Cooking
  • Character
  • Merchant
  • Trainer
  • Quest panels
  • Other standard Blizzard UI panels

Corrected Enemy Level Colors

Enemy level coloring now uses the appropriate Vanilla-style gray-mob threshold based on the player's current level.

This is a dynamic calculation — it is not hardcoded for a particular level range.

For example, a level 15 player fighting a level 10 enemy will correctly see that enemy as green rather than gray because the enemy can still award experience.

As the player levels, SlamFrames recalculates the appropriate difficulty thresholds automatically.

Target Aura Timer Layer Lock

An intermittent issue could cause numeric buff/debuff timers on the Target frame to disappear after extended gameplay even though the aura icons remained visible.

This could occur after SlamFrames dynamically changed frame strata or levels while interacting with other UI elements.

2.5 now explicitly keeps the complete target aura stack synchronized:

  • Aura icon
  • Cooldown layer
  • Numeric timer layer

The numeric timer is re-locked above its aura whenever SlamFrames reconciles its frame layering.

Improved Mining Flavor Text

The Ornate cast bar now treats Mining as an activity rather than constructing a generic targeted-cast sentence.

Previously:

Casting Mining on [Target Name]...

Now:

Mining

This matches the cleaner presentation already used for activities such as Cooking, Fishing, and profession crafting.

  2. Extract the archive.

  3. Copy the SlamFrames folder into:

    World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns\

  4. Your final installation should look like:

    World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns\SlamFrames\SlamFrames.toc

  5. Launch OctoWoW and make sure SlamFrames is enabled.

Bug Reports

If you encounter an OctoWoW-specific edge case, please include as much information as possible when reporting it.

For cast-bar issues, include:

  • Spell/action name
  • Normal cast, channel, item, profession, or world interaction
  • Displayed duration
  • Expected duration
  • What you cast immediately beforehand
  • Whether /reload temporarily fixes the issue

For aura issues, include:

  • Class
  • Buff/debuff name
  • Target type
  • How the aura was originally applied
  • How it was refreshed
  • Whether the icon, timer, or both disappeared

Screenshots and reproduction steps are extremely helpful.

SlamFrames 2.5 continues the work started in 2.0 with a focus on making the addon reliable during actual extended gameplay on the OctoWoW client.

Thank you to everyone testing SlamFrames and reporting the strange edge cases that come with pushing a Vanilla-era client this far.
