π v2.20.0: Chapter Markers & Safer Moves
A chapter marker hotkey, the update check finally working on Linux, and a round of fixes that keep your clips from going missing.
β¨ What's New
-
π Chapter marker hotkey:
- A new Smart Add Chapter Marker hotkey places a chapter in your recording and shows a notification. Chapters are named Chapter 1, Chapter 2 and so on. OBS also adds its own marker at the very start, so a player lists that one first.
- When a marker can't be added, it tells you why: the recording isn't running, it's paused, or the recording format doesn't support chapters. OBS's own hotkey just does nothing in those cases.
- Chapters need the Hybrid MP4 or Hybrid MOV recording format and OBS 30.2 or newer.
- Bind it in Settings β Hotkeys instead of OBS's own Add Chapter Marker, not alongside it, otherwise one press adds two chapters.
-
π§ Update check on Linux:
- The update check only ever worked on Windows, so on Linux the settings just showed "Check unavailable" and nobody was told about new versions.
- It now works through
curlorwget, and the download button opens the releases page.
π Bug Fixes
-
π‘οΈ Clips can no longer overwrite each other:
- When a clip's path got close to the 260-character limit, the script shortened the end of the file name, which is where the timestamp is. Later clips of the same game could then end up with the same name, and if the " (2)" version didn't fit either, the older clip was replaced.
- The script now leaves room for that suffix, and if nothing fits at all, the clip stays in the OBS folder instead of overwriting anything.
-
π‘οΈ Failed moves are reported honestly:
- A move that failed, say on a locked file or a folder on another drive, was still logged as done and showed "Clip Saved" while the clip stayed in the OBS folder.
- Failures are now logged as errors, and the popup says so too. A replay is retried for up to two minutes in case the file was only briefly locked, then shows "Move Failed". Screenshots and recordings show "Screenshot Not Moved" or "Recording Not Moved" instead of "Saved".
- If you start seeing these where you didn't before, that's a move that was already failing silently.
-
π§ No more freeze on KDE Wayland:
- On KDE Plasma without an X display, every save turned the cursor into a crosshair and froze OBS for up to 25 seconds. The call behind it was KDE's "click a window" picker, not a way to find the active window, so it's gone. Those saves now go to the fallback folder without the freeze. Before, they only landed in the right folder if you clicked the game window while the crosshair was showing.
-
πΌοΈ Thumbnails for games with "%" in the name:
- On Windows, FFmpeg thumbnails for games like 100% Orange Juice left a stray file and a duplicate clip behind. That's fixed.
-
πΌοΈ No leftovers with non-English folder names:
- On Windows, when a clip's path had letters outside English, such as a Cyrillic or accented user name, FFmpeg thumbnails left the original clip and a
.thumb.jpgbehind in the OBS folder, next to the finished copy in the game folder. Those files are now deleted properly.

π§ Screenshots after alt-tab on Linux:
- The short screenshot cache measured CPU time instead of real time on Linux, so a screenshot taken right after switching games could land in the previous game's folder.
-
π§ Linux installer:
- The dependency script no longer advertises KDE Wayland detection through
gdbus, which never actually worked, and checks forcurlorwgetinstead.
- The dependency script no longer advertises KDE Wayland detection through
π€ Special Thanks:
Huge thanks to @Besdroxk for the chapter marker idea (Issue #38) and to @TheFloatingCloud40 for the report that uncovered the missing Linux update check (Issue #37)!
