Peel 1.1.1
Peel 1.1.1
Download Peel-1.1.1.pkg and open it, or open Peel-1.1.1.dmg and drag Peel to Applications. Or: brew install --cask snackstudio/tap/peel. If you have 1.0.0 or 1.1.0, Peel ▸ Check for Updates… brings you here.
New
- A new icon: the orange from filesunwrapped.com, in light and dark, and in macOS 26's tinted and clear looks.
Fixed
- PeelFS stays on. Installing or reinstalling Peel with the installer, or opening Peel when macOS is slow to answer, no longer switches off a PeelFS you turned on.
- Quick Look never hangs on very large archives: a preview takes at most about three seconds, and work that runs out of time is stopped, not left running.
Also
- Every part of Peel now carries an Apple privacy manifest: no tracking and no data collected.
- Settings ▸ Peel Pro can accept a licence. Peel Pro isn't on sale yet.
Requirements
macOS 13 or later, Apple silicon or Intel. Signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple.

Peel 1.1.0
Peel 1.1.0
Download Peel-1.1.0.pkg and open it: the installer puts Peel in Applications, registers it with Finder, Quick Look and Spotlight, and opens a short welcome. Prefer to drag? Open Peel-1.1.0.dmg, or just double-click Peel inside it and it offers to move itself. Or: brew install --cask snackstudio/tap/peel. If you have 1.0.0, Peel ▸ Check for Updates… brings you here.
New
- An installer. A signed, notarized package with a welcome that checks the setup live and walks through the choices only you can make.
- Password-protected ZIPs open: ZipCrypto and WinZip AES, alongside 7z and RAR. Tick Remember in Keychain and Peel opens that archive next time without asking, even after you move it.
- Make archives. Compress with Password… in Finder's right-click menu writes an AES-256 ZIP that Peel, 7-Zip, WinZip and Keka open. On the command line,
peel createwrites ZIP, tar and its compressed kinds. - Peel in Finder's right-click menu, at the top level: Peel, Peel to… and Peel & Reveal. Turn it on once under System Settings ▸ General ▸ Login Items & Extensions; the welcome shows where.
- Spotlight finds files inside archives: search for a name and find the tar, 7z or RAR archive that holds it.
- More to look inside: installer packages (
.pkg), tar comic books (.cbt), Sketch files and single-file Pages, Numbers and Keynote documents. - Comic covers as Finder icons and in Quick Look.
- Move to Applications when Peel is opened straight from the disk image or Downloads.
- Faster: password-protected ZIPs extract several times faster on Apple silicon; ZIPs extract as fast as Archive Utility's engine or faster, and tar.gz files faster than bsdtar.
Fixed
- A link from a web page or another app can no longer make Peel extract or delete anything: only Peel's own Finder menu can hand it work.
- Opening an archive again after it changed no longer deletes edits you made in the folder beside it.
- Extracting a disk image or app bundle no longer follows links out of it.
Requirements
macOS 13 or later, Apple silicon or Intel. The app, the installer and the disk image are signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple.

Peel 1.0.0
The first public release of Peel, a macOS unarchiver from Snack Studio.
Download Peel-1.0.0.dmg, open it, and drag Peel to Applications. Or: brew install --cask snackstudio/tap/peel
What Peel does
- Opens archives like folders. Double-click a ZIP, RAR, 7z or TAR file and browse it in Finder.
- Extracts from Finder with the Peel, Peel to… and Peel & Reveal services.
- Quick Look previews of archive contents.
- Encrypted archives: one secure password prompt; the password never appears in process listings.
- Updates itself: Peel → Check for Updates…
Formats
ZIP and ZIP-based files (EPUB, JAR, APK, CBZ, Office documents), RAR including multipart sets, 7z, TAR with gzip, bzip2, xz or zstd, and single gzip, bzip2, xz or zstd files.
Safety
Peel never writes outside the folder you extract to or follows links out of it, whatever an archive contains, and stops archives that would expand to an unreasonable size.
Requirements
macOS 13 or later on Apple silicon or Intel. The app and the disk image are signed with Snack Studio's Developer ID and notarized by Apple.
