Revenant v0.0.1.1-alpha
⚠ Very early alpha. A hobbyist WebKit-2.36.8 browser engine ported to Windows 10 Mobile (ARM32 UWP). Rough edges and crashes are expected.
What's in this build
- Structural media + rasterisation rework (landed, still being hardened on-device): a concurrent-decode cap across memory tiers, one shared readback D3D device, an eviction use-after-free fix, double-buffered video frame delivery, contents-scale pinning to stop the tile-grid "nuke" storm, a per-frame raster budget, and tile-creation caps.
- H.264
<video>renders in-page (the old "decodes but never draws" bug is fixed for H.264). - WebAssembly (incl. modules with imports) works via a bundled WAMR runtime; Cloudflare Turnstile passes.
Known / still-open
- Only H.264 draws — VP9/AV1 and other codecs show a blank/black player. YouTube's H.264 path stops after ~1 minute.
- Tall, media-heavy pages can still crash or tile incorrectly (large image/video grids). This is the top active bug; the rework above is not fully resolved on-device yet.
- Heavy pages are slow (~2013 ARM32 hardware) and can be OOM-killed.
Install
Sideload the .appx on a Windows 10 Mobile phone with Developer mode on (Windows Device Portal → Apps → install, or Add-AppxPackage). This build is test-signed; if a previous Revenant is installed, uninstall it first.
Report a bug
See ISSUES.md — every report needs a scrubbed debug.log (remove visited URLs, cookies/tokens, passwords, IPs, device IDs before attaching).

Revenant v0.0.1 — early alpha (Windows 10 Mobile / ARM32)
Revenant v0.0.1 — very early alpha
A modern WebKit 2.36.8 browser engine ported to Windows 10 Mobile (ARM32 UWP), rendering
on-device (developed on a Nokia Lumia 640 XL). This is a hobbyist proof-of-concept.
⚠️ Read first
- YouTube does not work.
- Video playback does not work (experimental/unreliable media stack).
- Cloudflare detection is finnicky — some challenge-gated sites won't pass.
- Pages run slowly — ~2013-era ARM32 CPUs; even with JIT + DFG JIT it's a lot of hardware to ask.
- Crashes happen. It's alpha.
What it does do
Real modern-web rendering on a phone Microsoft abandoned: basic browsing, logins/forms, JavaScript
(JSC with a custom ARM32 LLInt + DFG JIT), HTTP/2+HTTP/3, cookies/localStorage, ServiceWorkers, WebGL,
soft keyboard — far beyond EdgeHTML.
Install (Revenant-alpha-ARM.appx)
- Phone in Developer mode (Settings → Update & security → For developers).
- Deploy over USB:
WinAppDeployCmd install -file Revenant-alpha-ARM.appx -ip <phone-ip>— or upload
via the phone's Device Portal. Installs/appears as Revenant.
Build it yourself
Source is a build recipe (WebKit + dependency patches, new port/shell/MSE source, ARM32-UWP
toolchain + scripts). See BUILD.md.
