Zotero Explain v0.3.6 — Floating panel display fix

Fixes the blank gray area below the floating explanation panel that could hide the paper. The reader now keeps its full width, and the paper remains visible below and around the panel when you resize it or scroll selected text offscreen.

Changes

• Free dragging: move the panel to either side of the reader using its title bar or six-dot handle. Manual movement takes priority, and selecting another passage restores automatic avoidance.
• Resizing: expand or shrink the panel from all four edges or any corner. Your requested size is retained while the panel remains open.
• Selection avoidance: keep the panel clear of selected text when space allows. Crowded layouts shrink the panel without reserving a full-height sidebar.
• English documentation: the repository README now defaults to English, with Simplified Chinese documentation also available.

Includes the dragging and resizing improvements from v0.3.4–v0.3.5. The plugin interface and default explanations are currently in Simplified Chinese.

Installation

1. Download zotero-explain-0.3.6.xpi.
2. In Zotero, open Tools → Plugins and choose Install Plugin From File… from the gear menu, or drag the XPI into the plugin manager. Install the new XPI to upgrade an existing installation.
3. Follow the README to sign in with your ChatGPT account and explain a selected passage.

Requires Zotero 10, an official local Codex executable, and a ChatGPT account with Codex access and available usage allowance. No API key is required. SHA256SUMS contains the installer checksum.

Validation

55 automated tests and 99 native macOS Zotero checks passed. Dragging, resizing, and scrolling were also verified with a real PDF in Zotero 10.0.4. See the verification log and native report. Windows and Linux have not been verified on hardware.

Zotero Explain v0.3.3 — Draggable panel and selection avoidance

Fix the explanation panel covering selected paper text and being impossible to move.

• Drag the title bar or six-dot handle; arrow keys also move a focused title bar.
• Automatically avoid selected text when opening, changing selection, or scrolling. Right-column selections can place the panel on the left.
• Keep the panel within the reader window and preserve macOS fullscreen. Shrink or reserve side space when needed; restore the reader on close.
• Fix Gecko coordinate conversion and refresh stale UI/scripts after upgrades.

Validation: 47 automated tests, 59 macOS native checks, 7 separate-process restart checks, and real-PDF mouse dragging/selection avoidance in Zotero 10.0.4. Windows/Linux layout has not been verified on hardware.

Install zotero-explain-0.3.3.xpi in Zotero → Tools → Plugins → Install Plugin From File. SHA256SUMS contains its checksum.

Zotero Explain v0.3.2 — Fullscreen reader fix

Keep explanations inside the fullscreen reader

Opening the old standalone explanation window could switch macOS away from Zotero's fullscreen Space. The explanation panel now lives inside the reader window, so the paper remains visible in the same window.

• Keeps a compact maximum content size of 460 × 600 and shrinks to fit smaller windows.
• Removes the separate native window, minimization, and opening animation.
• Supports PDF tabs and detached reader windows; new selections reuse the panel in the correct window.
• Close, Escape, and Cmd-W / Ctrl-W while focused in the panel close only the explanation and cancel its current response.
• Preserves account settings, model choice, reasoning effort, and Windows Codex discovery.

Download zotero-explain-0.3.2.xpi and install it through Zotero's Tools → Plugins menu to update.

Validation

36 automated tests, 51 native checks on macOS/Zotero 10.0.4, and 7 separate-process startup/persistence checks passed. Native checks cover entering fullscreen before opening the panel, unchanged native window count, closing and shortcut handling, UI behavior with a mock backend, and plugin cleanup. Windows/Linux window behavior has not been verified on real machines.

Zotero Explain v0.3.1 — Windows Codex discovery fix

Windows Codex discovery fix

Previously, the plugin only checked .local/bin and PATH on Windows, so Microsoft Store installations could be missed. Version 0.3.1 queries the current user's Store package registrations and locates the bundled Codex CLI, including after app updates and installations on another drive.

• Adds common standalone Windows CLI locations and bounded fallback when the Store query fails or times out.
• Accepts quoted executable paths copied from Explorer and environment variables such as %LOCALAPPDATA%.
• Gives clearer messages for stale paths, inaccessible files, and process launch failures.
• Preserves existing model, reasoning effort, and account settings.

Install

Download zotero-explain-0.3.1.xpi and install it through Zotero's Tools → Plugins menu. Under 账号与设置, clear any old manually configured Codex path and click 保存 to enable automatic discovery. If Windows blocks access to the bundled executable, install the official standalone Codex CLI and select its native codex.exe.

Validation

31 automated tests passed, including 10 Windows discovery/error-handling simulations. On macOS with Zotero 10.0.4, 45 native checks and 5 separate-process persistence checks passed. Windows sign-in and explanation generation have not yet been verified on a real Windows machine.
