Release list
Legible 0.3.0
Legible can now tell you when a new version is out, if you'd like it to.
Not signed yet: as with earlier versions, Windows SmartScreen may warn the first time you run the installer or the exe. Check the download against the release's SHA256SUMS.txt first, and if it matches, choose More info, then Run anyway.
Added
- Check for updates, off until you turn it on in Settings > General > Updates. Then Legible asks GitHub for its latest version straight away, each time it starts, and when you choose Check now or Help > Check for updates, and a bar tells you when there's a newer one, with a link to its release page. It sends nothing about you or your documents, and never downloads or installs anything.
Legible 0.2.0
More of what you need is on the toolbar, and Legible keeps your place as you move round.
Not signed yet: as with 0.1.0, Windows SmartScreen may warn the first time you run the installer or the exe. Check the download against the release's SHA256SUMS.txt first, and if it matches, choose More info, then Run anyway.
Added
- Save and Save as on the toolbar, beside the unsaved-changes dot. Save is greyed out while there's nothing to save, and its tooltip says why.
- Save as (Ctrl+Shift+S) saves the text as a new file, and the window then shows that file: its title, recent files and live reload follow it. Pressing Ctrl+S on a file that can't be saved where it is, such as an email's attachment, offers Save as, so you can save it somewhere else and edit it there.
- Undo and Redo on the toolbar in Split and Edit, greyed out while there's nothing to undo or redo.
- Recent files from the toolbar: the arrow beside Open lists the files you opened recently.
- Save as PDF on the toolbar, beside Print.
Changed
- Save a copy… is now Save as… (File menu, Ctrl+Shift+S): the window carries on with the new file, rather than leaving you in the old one.
- The toolbar fits a narrow window: buttons no longer overlap or run off the edge. Groups that don't fit move to the top of the More menu (⋯), and menus scroll rather than run past the bottom of the window.
- Thin dividers between the toolbar's groups, so related buttons read together.
Fixed
- Your place is kept between View, Split and Edit: going back to View no longer jumps to the top of the document, and going into Split or Edit opens the text where you were reading.
- The scrollbar keeps up with the pointer on a long document: dragging it no longer lags, and the document's length doesn't change as you scroll through it.
Legible 0.1.0
The first release.
Not signed yet: Windows SmartScreen may warn the first time you run the installer or the exe ("Windows protected your PC"). Check the download against the release's SHA256SUMS.txt first (sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS.txt --ignore-missing, or compare Get-FileHash <file> with it), and if it matches, choose More info, then Run anyway.
Added
- Markdown that reads like a document, in a light, dark or Windows theme: clear type at a comfortable width, everything GitHub shows (tables, task lists, footnotes, alerts and the rest), code coloured by its language, and Mermaid diagrams.
- Outline and find: an outline of the headings to move round a long document, find in the document (Ctrl+F), and zoom from 50% to 300%.
- Copy into Outlook, Word and OneNote: Copy document (Ctrl+Shift+C) and Copy selection keep headings, lists, tables, code, links and pictures, with diagrams as pictures.
- Print and Save as PDF: the document alone, in the light theme, with its title and page numbers.
- View, Split and Edit (Ctrl+E): the Markdown text beside the document or alone, the document updated as you type, with find and replace and Windows' spell-check.
- Saving that can't lose work: a file keeps its own encoding and line endings, and is saved only over the file as it was read. A file changed on disk while you edit asks which to keep, and closing with unsaved changes asks first.
- Live reload: a file changed on disk shows its new version and keeps your place.
- Pictures from the internet only with your consent: they're blocked until you allow them, once or always for a file, and then only over HTTPS.
- An installer and a portable zip: a per-user installer (no admin rights) that registers Legible for Markdown files, and a portable zip that changes nothing on the PC unless asked.
- Privacy: no telemetry and no network. A document's scripts never run, and links open in your browser.
- MIT licensed, with every dependency MIT or equally permissive and system fonts only; the licences are in THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.txt.
