Modesto v0.4.0 — Berkeley

Berkeley is the redesign release. It packages the product, navigation, customization, and reliability work completed in the latest development pass—not the earlier foundation migration.

A redesigned workspace

  • Rebuilt the sidebar around projects, chats, Copilot sessions, GitHub identity, and faster task navigation.
  • Redesigned the chat landing page, composer, conversation-mode controls, tabs, model picker, traits picker, approval panels, and message timeline.
  • Added a new Modesto wordmark, refreshed icons, cleaner menus and popovers, and a broader visual-system pass across the application.
  • Simplified heavy animated and 3D surfaces in the welcome, authentication, automations, and device experiences.
  • Standardized open/close motion across disclosures and collapsible regions.

Settings and customization

  • Rebuilt Settings with new navigation, breadcrumbs, search coverage, panel layouts, and restore controls.
  • Added a large theme catalog sourced from OpenCode and VS Code palettes, with improved previews and editor synchronization.
  • Added terminal appearance controls and file-icon preferences.
  • Added Copilot customization pages for preferences, palettes, skills, and session behavior.
  • Added a full notification-sound library, settings, transitions, and playback coordination.
  • Added dedicated Claude, Codex, and Cursor interface styles with provider-matched layouts, light/dark palettes, and preserved Modesto account controls.

Chat, artifacts, and tools

  • Improved folder-free Chat and repository-scoped Work behavior throughout navigation and composer flows.
  • Added stronger spawned-agent/session presentation and artifact targeting.
  • Improved inline visual rendering, Canvas behavior, Markdown output, Monaco editing, and the Files panel.
  • Added navigation helpers and more predictable right-panel state across Browser, Terminal, Files, Changes, Canvas, and Artifacts.
  • Expanded slash-command and command-palette behavior.

Providers and models

  • Redesigned provider and model selection, ordering, grouping, and availability states.
  • Expanded custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint validation and model-router settings.
  • Improved Codex session handling, Gemini provider behavior, ACP support, and provider command recovery.
  • Added clearer provider update and model-release notifications.

Reliability and desktop integration

  • Strengthened chat state transitions, approvals, handoffs, project intent, and reconnect behavior.
  • Added projection persistence changes for project kinds and more reliable orchestration snapshots.
  • Added desktop IPC support for native system sounds.
  • Moved stable updates to a Modesto-owned feed while preserving default manifests for older Modesto installations.

Downloads

The macOS builds are signed with Developer ID, notarized by Apple, and accepted by Gatekeeper. The Linux AppImage is also available now. The Windows package is an unsigned manual build, so Windows may show an Unknown publisher or SmartScreen warning. It is excluded from automatic updates until Modesto has its own Trusted Signing certificate.

Requires Bun 1.3.9+, Node 24.13.1+, and a supported provider CLI. Licensed AGPL-3.0-only.
